Angel Gomes Scout Report At Lille OSC 2024/2025: The Perfect Fit For Crystal Palace? – Player Analysis

Many football fans will recall when 16-year-old Angel Gomes made his senior debut for Manchester United.

In the final match of the 2016/2017 Premier League season, Gomes entered the pitch in the 88th minute, replacing Wayne Rooney during a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace.

This appearance put his name in the history books.

He became the first Premier League player born in the 2000s.

Fast forward eight years, and Gomes’ journey has taken him through every level of the England national youth system, culminating in a senior cap awarded by Lee Carsley.

After spending five years at Lille OSC in Ligue 1, his contract is set to expire, making the 24-year-old midfielder one of the most intriguing free agents on the European market this summer.

As Gomes prepares for the next chapter of his career, speculation abounds regarding his possible destinations.

Premier League clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have reportedly shown interest, recognising his technical security and versatility across midfield roles.

This analysis will provide a player analysis of Angel Gomes, examining his playing style, strengths, and areas for growth.

Furthermore, we will identify one Premier League club where his attributes could add good value.

Angel Gomes Stats

At 5’6” and operating primarily as a right-footed central midfielder, Angel Gomes is a player defined by his technical security and spatial awareness.

Angel Gomes’ pizza chart highlights his strengths in possession and passing.

He ranks in the 82nd percentile for received passes per 90, the 86th percentile for accurate passes, the 79th percentile for dangerous passes per 90, and the 82nd percentile for passes per 90—all indicating elite involvement and reliability on the ball.

His progressive passing is also strong (52nd percentile) and shows an apparent ability to move the play forward.

All the data used here is based on percentile values calculated for Angel Gomes within his league and position (attacking midfielder); the 50th percentile represents the league median for his role.

His comfort in tight areas and delicate first touch make him comfortable both as a deep-lying playmaker and in more advanced midfield roles.

Gomes’ technical level is shown by his willingness to receive possession under pressure.

He constantly scans the environment, adjusting to new reference points and “pictures,” which enables him to make split-second decisions: bounce the ball to retain possession or shift his body weight and accelerate away from pressure, exploiting the spaces.

Tactically, Gomes’ low centre of gravity gives him an advantage.

It allows him to combine in small spaces and evade opponents by using sharp turns and subtle body feints.

When pressed, he manipulates his shoulders and often draws fouls or escapes their cover (as shown in the video below).

This is common amongst technically elite midfielders who understand not just how to receive but also how to invite and exploit pressure.

Gomes has primarily played in a double pivot at Lille within a 4-2-3-1 structure.

This role requires not only on-ball skill but also positional intelligence (working alongside a teammate) and an ability to orchestrate build-up play from deep.

Despite an injury-hit season limiting him to 14 league appearances, Gomes has produced good underlying numbers.

He averages 5.43 progressive passes per 90 minutes, placing him in the 81st percentile among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues and major continental competitions.

His long-passing accuracy is 71.4%, ranking him in the 91st percentile, and he delivers 3.72 passes into the final third per 90 (87th percentile).

The latter was shown during the Nations League against Finland, where Angel Gomes has the composure to play a perfectly weighted through ball to Jack Grealish.

This leads to a goalscoring opportunity, which is converted.

Perhaps most impressively, Gomes is dispossessed only 0.3 times per 90 minutes, which places him in the 99th percentile—a testament to his ball security and press resistance.

Under Pressure: Angel Gomes Strengths & Weaknesses

Under pressure, Gomes positions his body intelligently to shield the ball, receiving on the half-turn, and using his frame to impede defenders.

This results in him drawing fouls from aggressive markers.

He recognises when to recycle possession with minimal touches, disrupting compact opposition structures and creating new passing lanes.

His tactical flexibility is shown in his movement during build-up phases; he frequently drops between or outside his centre-backs, being part of a situational back three.

From these deeper zones, he is able to scan the pitch and orchestrate switches of play, especially left-to-right diagonals.

In a Ligue 1 match against AS Saint-Étienne, Angel Gomes receives the ball under pressure, quickly scans, and executes a switch to Gabriel Gudmundsson with his weaker left foot.

This action shows his ambipedal ability, expands the play, and exploits the far-side space.

Gomes prefers to receive with the opposition’s block in front of him.

He excels at switching play to exploit weak-side spaces, a way for teams seeking to stretch compact defences.

Equally, he is comfortable operating between the lines, receiving the ball behind the opposition midfield in congested areas, manipulating it under pressure, and progressing play.

In a UEFA Champions League match against Feyenoord, Angel Gomes receives the ball under pressure and quickly scans to identify the passing option of Rémy Cabella.

His tight control and composure draw a foul from Gjivai Zechiël.

Gomes shows his press resistance, spatial awareness, and ability to advance play in demanding situations.

However, there are limitations to his profile.

While Gomes is capable of pressing with intensity higher up the pitch, his defensive contribution in deeper roles is less robust.

His stature and tackling technique do not lend themselves to dominating physically or covering large ground defensively, especially in sustained defensive phases.

He is more effective in counter-pressing scenarios, where his anticipation and quick reactions can disrupt opposition build-up.

For teams that can accommodate a midfielder who offers supreme technical ability but less defensive solidity, Gomes’s on-ball qualities far outweigh his physical limitations.

Based on these technical and tactical attributes, the next section will examine two clubs whose current squad profiles and tactical requirements indicate a clear need for a player with Gomes’s skill set and upside.

Why Angel Gomes Is A Natural Fit For Crystal Palace

If Crystal Palace lose Eberechi Eze this summer, their tactical identity (creative capacity in the final third) could be at risk.

Under Oliver Glasner’s 3-4-2-1 system, the Eagles have thrived on athletic wing-back play, a double pivot for control and progression, and two advanced creators supporting a central striker.

Eze’s mix of press resistance, ball-carrying, and line-breaking has been central to this structure, and replacing those traits will be a challenge.

Angel Gomes fits this need almost seamlessly, particularly as a partner for Adam Wharton in the double pivot.

Gomes’s ability to receive under pressure, manipulate his body orientation, and “invite” opponents before.

His timing when releasing the ball is tailor-made for Premier League build-up play, where pressing intensity is high, and space is at a premium.

His technical base and habit of scanning for new reference points before receiving them make him an optimal “press-resistant” option.

Statistically, his progressive passing metrics support the responsibility of vertical progression, which is essential against well-drilled mid-blocks or aggressive high presses.

A key tactical advantage lies in Gomes’s perception-action coupling—the ability to continually scan and adjust his body to receive on the half-turn.

He is always “open” to multiple passing options.

This is the bedrock of positional play and is central to Glasner’s philosophy.

It requires players to create and exploit superiority in key zones constantly.

Gomes’s comfort dropping nearer the first phase would unlock additional build-up flexibility based on his pass selection.

This movement triggers automatisms: wing-backs (Tyrick Mitchell and Daniel Muñoz) can advance to pin opposition wingers.

At the same time, the double pivot manipulates the opposition press to open central corridors and third-man runs.

Gomes is not a direct Eze clone, lacking the same dribbling explosiveness.

But he compensates with elite ball security and the ability to operate in tight half-spaces.

As a left-sided advanced midfielder in the “2” behind the striker, he could serve as a hybrid 8/10, occupying the half-spaces and Zone 14, combining with Ismaïla Sarr or Wharton.

This will also include linking with overlapping wingbacks and supporting vertical combination play.

His technical proficiency in one-touch play and quick wall passes fits well with Glasner’s positional automatisms when establishing overloads and creating overload-to-isolate situations in wide areas.

Defensively, Gomes’ intensity is best maximised in counter-pressing scenarios rather than in sustained positional defending.

Glasner’s defensive structure is about rapid ball recovery immediately after losing possession.

This suits Gomes’s anticipation and agility in tight spaces.

By pairing him with a more athletic defensive midfielder, such as Wharton, who can screen the back three, cover lateral spaces, and engage in duels, Palace can effectively mask Gomes’s tackling limitations.

From a positional play perspective, Gomes excels in the half-spaces and Zone 14.

He can maintain possession under pressure and create new passing angles through subtle feints and disguised passes.

His range of passing, especially diagonals to wide areas, would maximise the attacking potential of Palace’s wingbacks, utilising their width and ability to create overloads.

Against deep blocks, Gomes can unlock blocks by manipulating defenders with quick passing sequences, double movements, and decoy runs.

In summary, Angel Gomes provides a high-level solution to Palace’s potential Eze-sized void.

He brings press resistance, progressive passing, and technical flexibility.

He can raise the ceiling of Glasner’s possession structure and transition game.

His micro-tactical awareness, comfort in multiple build-up roles, and ability to build and exploit spatial superiority would make Crystal Palace a more unpredictable team.

Overall, Angel Gomes is one of the most technically secure and tactically versatile midfielders available on the market this summer.

His journey from Manchester United prodigy to a mature, multifaceted operator in Ligue 1 and European competitions demonstrates the development of his skill and football intelligence.

While his physical limitations mean he is best paired with a more robust partner, his strengths in build-up and combination play at a high level would be desirable for any club.

Conclusion

For Crystal Palace, especially if Eberechi Eze departs, Gomes offers a ready-made solution for the double pivot or as a creative advanced midfielder.

His composure, passing range, and ability to manipulate opposition can improve Palace.

Ultimately, Gomes’s signing could fill the creative gap and raise the overall technical ceiling of any club that secures his services.
