Manchester City Vs Napoli [2-0] Champions League 2025/2026: How Antonio Conte Delt With Numerical Inferiority? – Tactical Analysis

Manchester City hosted Napoli for the opening game of both teams’ UEFA Champions League journey.

The match ended with a 2-0 win for the Citizens despite Napoli’s considerable efforts, especially during the first hour of the match.

Antonio Conte had to deal with numerical inferiority after Giovanni Di Lorenzo received a red card in the 21st minute of the first half.

This card conditioned the team’s performance during the remaining minutes of the game and obliged him to make the necessary changes to adapt to Manchester City’s strengths and resist their consistent attacking attempts.

In other words, Napoli showed more rivalry and challenged Man City better when they were equal in number, but then they had to retreat and defend with a low defensive bloc while relying on counter-attacking opportunities to help them punish Manchester City.

Although Napoli were dangerous during the first part of the match, counterattacking opportunities were not really possible afterwards, and the team had to resist mainly in defence.

On the other hand, Pep Guardiola’s side did not start the match as they wanted.

They encountered a very ambitious and organised team that did not allow them to score early in the game.

However, with recurrent attacks and a team organisation that favoured continuous pressure and possession inside the opponent’s half, they pushed Napoli into committing mistakes.

Then they continued to strive for a goal, which they succeeded in scoring during the second half, before adding a second goal to destroy Napoli’s comeback hopes.

In this tactical analysis of the match between Manchester City and Napoli, the focus will be on how Napoli dealt with their numerical inferiority in terms of decision-making, substitutions, and defensive tactics.

The analysis will also focus on Manchester City’s attacking solutions and how they were capable of opening the score and adding a second goal despite Napoli’s tight and compact defending efforts.

Manchester City Vs Napoli Lineups & Formations

Guardiola preserved the same lineup that he used against Manchester United in the Premier League, using the 4-1-4-1 formation with Gianluigi Donnarumma as a goalkeeper, Abdukodir Khusanov as a right-back, Rúben Dias and Joško Gvardiol as centre-backs, and Nico O’Reilly as a left-back.

Guardiola gave O’Reilly a lot of freedom in the attacking phase, and we saw him move regularly to the middle like an additional midfielder, helping with penetrations and passes and, more importantly, leaving the space needed for Jérémy Doku on the left flank to exploit it in the best possible way.

In midfield, Guardiola relied on Rodri as a defensive midfielder before substituting him with Nico González during the second half.

Both Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders played as central midfielders.

On the wings, he used Doku and Bernando Silva to support the main striker, Erling Haaland.

Manchester City Vs Napoli Lineups

Just like Guardiola, Conte decided to keep the same line-up that he used in their previous Serie A win against Fiorentina.

He relied on the 4-1-4-1 formation, which used Vanja Milinković-Savić as a goalkeeper, Sam Beukema and Alessandro Buongiorno as centre-backs, Di Lorenzo as a right-back before getting sent off early in the first half, and Leonardo Spinazzola as a left-back.

The midfield consisted of Stanislav Lobotka, a defensive midfielder, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, and former Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, central midfielders.

Matteo Politano and Scott McTominay played on the wings behind the main striker, Rasmus Højlund.

De Bruyne was very unlucky in this match as Conte was obliged to substitute him off following the red card of Di Lorenzo in order to make up for the defensive gap at the right flank by adding Mathías Olivera on the left flank and moving Spinazzola to play as a right-back.

This helped Conte maintain the team’s defensive balance at the expense of the attacking quality and quantity, as losing a player like De Bruyne upfront is obviously a huge loss against a team like Manchester City.

Nevertheless, this was the risk that had to be taken at that team since De Bruyne is the midfielder with fewer defensive roles and, therefore, can be subbed off.

Napoli’s midfield line turned into a duo made up of Lobotka and Anguissa, with the two wingers supporting in the defensive phase as well.

How Napoli Dealt With The Numerical Inferiority To Resist Man City

Napoli started the game with an adequate mentality and were able to keep up with Manchester City’s attempts to dominate the game.

They relied on disciplined defensive positioning from all ten players, especially both wingers, who played a remarkable role in limiting the impact of dangerous wingers like Doku and Silva.

In fact, both Politano and McTominay were crucial from this perspective, especially during the first half.

They sacrificed a considerable part of their energy to support the defensive phase and consistently closed down Doku and Silva, avoiding a 1-v-1 situation with the full-backs.

Napoli Double Marking On The Wings

The following picture highlights how Politano retreats completely to support Di Lorenzo against Doku, preventing him from penetrating or cutting inside, and obliging him to opt for a pass to O’Reilly.

This was an important factor that helped Napoli limit Manchester City’s danger on both wings.

The Citizens relied a lot more on the left wing in their attacks throughout the game, exploiting Doku’s penetration abilities.

Napoli’s double marking inside the final third was efficient, as it was their only solution to prevent Manchester City from finding shooting trajectories from distance or gaining inviting penetration spaces.

Napoli High Pressing & High Defensive Block

Napoli also relied on high pressing, especially before the red card.

They reacted extremely quickly to Manchester City’s possession and build-up from the back by marking players individually to limit the passing options as much as possible and try to intercept the ball quickly.

As shown in the following picture, this high pressing from Napoli was always followed by an immediate advancement of the defensive block, making it more difficult for the Citizens’ defenders to attempt long passes to one of their attacking players.

In that case, using a high defensive block was a risk that needed to be taken to limit the danger of potential long passes.

Playing with a high defensive block allows Napoli the needed time to retreat and defend against Manchester City players in case they win the aerial duels in that area and start advancing towards the box.

Napoli kept using this high-pressing and high-defensive block system regularly in the match, and its extreme organisation made it complicated for Napoli to exploit potential errors.

Playing with very close lines and in a compact shape helped Napoli become more difficult to surpass, even if they rely on Haaland’s aerial abilities.

Napoli Crucial Defensive Mistake

That said, Di Lorenzo made the mistake of tackling Haaland in a key area, which conditioned Napoli’s performance for the rest of the match.

In that action, Haaland was between two Napoli players, and both of them could have handled the situation much better.

Di Lorenzo was capable of intercepting the through pass if he did not attempt an anticipatory diagonal run instead of a normal run, which led to attempting a sliding tackle against Haaland to try to save the situation.

Napoli Crucial Defensive Mistake
To make up for the loss of his key defensive player, Conte made the difficult choice of sacrificing De Bruyne for the sake of keeping the team’s balance.

This choice can also be understood and discussed since Napoli lost a considerable part of their possible attacking threat by subbing De Bruyne off and were obliged to attack discreetly during the rest of the game.

The subbing off of De Bruyne made it even more difficult for Højlund to get the needed support, even when he was able to win aerial duels.

However, the positive aspect of this decision is that it allowed Conte to continue securing the wings with two wingers who retreat continuously and two full-backs who mark the opposing wingers tightly, leaving no space for penetrations from both wings.

As the game went on, Billy Gilmour‘s substitution confirmed that the Scottish could have been much more useful and impactful in Napoli’s build-up and playmaking than Anguissa, who looked out of form and tired in this match.

This suggests that Conte could have noticed his player’s inability to keep up with the game’s requirements and would have subbed him for Gilmour at the start of the second half to try winning back the balance they had initially, especially when they tried building from the back.

Napoli Attacking Players Support In The Defensive Phase

Despite that, Napoli succeeded in resisting Manchester City’s attacks until almost the 60th minute thanks to their disciplined defending, Milinković-Savić’s crucial saves, and Politano’s remarkable saving tackle at the minute.

This was very positive and highlighted the team’s mentality and ability to resist one of the most dangerous opponents.

This save near the goal line from Politano highlights the attitude of the attacking players, which helped make the team more compact at the back.

Otherwise, the score would have been much more problematic for Napoli if those attacking players were indifferent regarding the defensive phase.

How Manchester City Unlocked The Game

On a mental level, it was not easy for Manchester City or any other team to keep striving for a goal when they were unable to do so for one hour against a team that lacked a player.

However, the Citizens’ experience and most of all patience in the build-up of their actions and in the alternation of their attacking solutions made it possible for them to reach the net of Milinković-Savić’s goal after several created attempts that were countered or saved.

Manchester City First Goal

With a very technical and beautiful combination, Manchester City scored their first goal, thanks mainly to Foden’s high tactical awareness of his surroundings and ability to provide a very intelligent key pass to Haaland despite receiving the ball in a very tight space and while being surrounded by almost four Napoli players.

The movement without the ball from Haaland encouraged Foden to opt for that pass, giving the Norwegian striker the chance to score with a lobbed header that showcases the latter’s instinctive goalscoring skills and ability to deal with the various goalscoring situations he is put in.

Manchester City Second Goal

Following their first goal, the game became a bit easier for the Citizens as they were able to protect their lead and continue their possession-based attacking inside Napoli’s half, waiting for a second goalscoring opportunity by pushing Napoli to commit errors, whether in terms of positioning or defensive decisions.

Since Napoli remained compact at the back, Manchester City were able to add their second goal thanks to Doku’s solo effort.

He broke the defensive line with his quick dribbling and body feint, which were crucial to putting him in a very suitable goalscoring situation.

Doku received the ball centrally and was able to get through Napoli’s defence before scoring using his left foot.

This action highlights the importance of having such an effective dribbler and someone who can create the threat out of nowhere.

Furthermore, the continuous changing of positions of Doku, Silva, and even O’Reilly, who often played more centrally and not as a left-back, made things complicated for Napoli.

Doku, for instance, received the ball in a different position each time, making it complicated for Napoli to assign him to one defender and mark him tightly throughout the whole match.

Conclusion

Napoli lost an important game but learned a lot and were able to identify their weaknesses and strengths on a European level.

At the same time, they encountered a situation different from usual.

They had to play with a numerical inferiority against a tough team, which obliged them to play even more as a team.

Furthermore, this scenario would even change how some of the players deal with complicated situations, as some would prefer conceding a goal rather than getting sent off, knowing that equalising while avoiding a numerical inferiority would be less complicated than playing with a numerical inferiority against teams that have the level of Manchester City.
