Leon Bailey At AS Roma 20252026 - Player Analysis

Leon Bailey is set to become the first Jamaican footballer to play for AS Roma following his recent loan move to I Giallorossi, as Aston Villa have agreed a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

This loan deal follows other significant signings for Roma to reinforce their squad, such as Wesley França from Flamengo, Daniele Ghilardi from Hellas Verona, Evan Ferguson from Brighton & Hove Albion, and Neil El Aynaou from RC Lens.

Along with their current players, these reinforcements can be considered very promising so far as Roma strive to be as competitive as possible in Serie A this season.

Ensuring consistency in results and continuity in the coaching staff will definitely help Roma have a much better first half of the season.

If Roma succeed in reaching this objective, they will surely be in a much better place by mid-season than last term, and that would help them finish the last decisive part of the season well, knowing that the initial part of last season was the reason why they failed to challenge for the top three spots in 2024/2025.

Claudio Ranieri‘s splendid work in regrouping the team and putting them on track made things much more positive, and that’s what allowed them to even challenge for a UEFA Champions League spot during the last fixtures.

This season, however, Roma appear to be much more prepared to start the season as well as possible.

The loan deal of an experienced and confirmed player like Bailey can only add more quality and expertise to an already up-and-coming squad.

New manager Gian Piero Gasperini will then have to assemble the best possible lineup, capitalise on his players’ abilities, and maximise their full potential.

He has already proven himself to be one of the best in the world at improving his players’ performances and helping them shine through his specific playing system.

This Leon Bailey player analysis and scout report will mainly explore Bailey’s abilities on the wing, his possible other positions, and how he will fit into Gian Piero Gasperini tactics.

The analysis will also examine Leon Bailey’s weaknesses and areas for improvement to determine how Gasperini can enhance his development and make him a more complete player.

Suppose Gasperini succeeds in making Leon Bailey a more powerful and complete winger with convincing performances at Roma this season.

In that case, I Giallorossi should do their best to activate their option to buy him at the end of the season.

Leon Bailey Style Of Play

Bailey is a very reliable attacking player whose impact can be guaranteed for Roma, especially if he avoids injuries and quickly becomes accustomed to Gasperini’s ideas and playing system.

With 6.62 attempted dribbles and an average success rate of 54.1%, we can argue that Bailey is good enough in this regard and can work to become even more decisive with his dribbles.

These successful dribbles often lead him to either finish by himself or provide an average of 3.85 passes to the penalty box per 90 minutes, with a success rate of 49.1%.

Leon Bailey Intelligent Passing

Leon Bailey possesses the passing abilities necessary to surpass these averages and become even more decisive, despite already achieving excellent goal contribution numbers.

The following assist example highlights the ease with which Bailey can make the final touch despite being surrounded by opponents, providing an intelligent key pass with the exterior part of the foot between two opponents, in a way that made the action look easy despite its complexity.

Bailey also proved that he can offer diverse passing types with remarkable accuracy and the ability to create the danger needed from any spot inside the final third.

Being an excellent crosser is a quality that should not be underestimated, given that Bailey crosses with pinpoint accuracy most of the time and uses both feet depending on the situation, which makes it complicated to block or anticipate his crossing attempts.

Leon Bailey Crossing Traits

This goal action highlights Leon Bailey’s right-footed crossing ability.

He was put in a situation that obliged him to use his right foot to provide an accurate cross to his teammate inside the box despite the disturbance.

In addition, Leon Bailey did not provide such assists only once but succeeds in doing so regularly with the use of his right foot.

He often scans the pitch quickly and relies on his accurate passing to do the rest.

Making a ball progression on the right-wing, fixing his two markers and then providing backward pass to his teammate like the picture shows, helping him avoid marking and be in a perfect goalscoring situation means that Leon Bailey does not try to provide a pass to a teammate and that’s all but thinks continuously to find the most dangerous passing possibility and often executes it with success.

Doing so against one of the big teams in the Premier League, Arsenal, adds to the importance of Bailey’s playmaking skills and confirms that he has the standards needed to shine in Serie A with Roma, as he is used to performing well in a similar, if not a more difficult, league.

Leon Baily Finishing Skills

In addition to providing assists using both feet, Bailey proved on numerous occasions that he can finish actions and be decisive with both feet as well, which makes him a dangerous attacking player for defenders and goalkeepers.

Bailey shoots 2.95 times per match and scores an average of 0.27, reaching 0.32 during his record season.

Leon Bailey Right-Footed Finishing

Although Bailey is not a traditional striker, he usually succeeds in exploiting the goal-scoring opportunities he gets, often scoring by doing everything himself at times, which makes him special and reliable in this aspect.

In the following goal action, for instance, Bailey was blocked by a defender.

Instead of opting for the more obvious solution of making a backwards pass to a teammate, he was able to dribble past his marker and finish using his right foot.

This proves that Bailey can be very agile and efficient in such duels, in addition to his diverse shooting solutions and techniques.

Mastering the curved shot is another trait that should not be overlooked when assessing Bailey’s goalscoring abilities.

It is one of the shots that he uses the most, usually with accuracy and efficiency.

He was already capable of scoring curved shots using his left foot from different spots and with various trajectories, and succeeding in doing so with Roma will further prove the importance of this loan deal.

Leon Bailey Curved Shots

This example showcases his ability to dribble past defenders and choose the right timing and trajectory to execute his curved shots.

Bailey uses these shots quickly, between defenders, and in a way that surprises goalkeepers, making them very dangerous against any opponent.

How Leon Bailey Fits In Gian Piero Gasperini Tactics At AS Roma

Bailey is a 28-year-old international Jamaican winger who began his senior career at Genk in 2015, before playing for Bayer Leverkusen and subsequently Aston Villa.

Although Bailey’s numbers last season were not great, with only two goals and four assists, the player has shown consistency in terms of performance.

He rarely misses games or gets injured, and that has been proven throughout his career so far.

What is even more important is that Bailey succeeds in achieving some outstanding goal contribution rates on average, which can be very useful to a team like Roma because they still lack attacking players with consistent goal contribution numbers.

Leon Bailey’s Possible Positions At AS Roma

Position-wise, Bailey has already been used in multiple positions with the teams he played for.

Whether as a right-winger, right midfielder, right wing-back, left-winger, left midfielder, left wing-back, right wing-back, attacking midfielder, or even as a striker at times, he has usually been instrumental and impactful to his teams.

Therefore, Gasperini will surely get along well with Bailey, as he loves profiles that offer plenty of solutions and can adapt to switching positions and roles.

At Roma, Baily can be used as a right wing-back or a left wing-back in Gasperini’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

He also fits well as one of the two attacking midfielders playing behind the striker and leaning towards the wings.

That said, Gasperini is more likely to use him as an attacking midfielder, mainly because Bailey is not one of the best in the defensive phase, and using him as a wing-back would be riskier than putting him in a more advanced position.

Leon Bailey’s Possible Positions At Roma

Based on Roma’s opening Serie A match of the season, Gasperini used Matías Soulé as a right winger and Stephan El Shaarawy as a left winger, which confirms that Gasperini prefers inverted wingers.

This also means that Bailey will most probably become the starter on the right wing at the expense of Soulé and Paulo Dybala, who was not Gasperini’s first option even before getting Bailey in the team.

However, Gasperini can rely on Bailey for the left winger role mainly because he has plenty of options on the right wing (Soulé, Dybala, and Tommaso Baldanzi) and fewer options on the left wing, with only El Shaarawy as a viable left winger.

The fact that he used the left midfielder El Aynaoui as a substitute for El Shaarawy confirms that Roma lacks squad depth on that wing and that Gasperini would be using Bailey more often on that wing if the club doesn’t buy an additional reliable left winger before the closing of the transfer window.

Since Gasperini usually likes to rely on the 3-4-2-1 formation or the 3-4-1-2 formation, Bailey can prove to be a beneficial fit for the advanced playmaker position behind the two strikers, according to the 3-4-1-2 formation.

Bailey is more accustomed to playing on the wings, but he can be very dangerous if he plays between the lines and just behind the strikers, especially if Gasperini gives him the freedom to lean on the wings during the games.

At the same time, Gasperini can use Bailey as a second striker on the right side, which would make Bailey even more dangerous, as it would allow him to be closer to the goal.

Having a player like Bailey within this team would certainly help Gasperini during the attacking transitions, especially if used on the wings.

The Italian head coach is known for relying extensively on explosive accelerations, especially from the wings.

In this regard, no one in the actual Roma squad list can be considered better than Bailey, given that the latter is a confirmed winger with exceptional acceleration abilities combined with excellent dribbling skills and passing mastery.

Like he was able to alternate his tactics at Atalanta by using Ademola Lookman, Charles De Ketelaere, and Gianluca Scamacca in different positions, he will undoubtedly use Bailey and two other players, mainly a striker and a left winger, to build his tactics on.

This means that Bailey would need to adapt to Gasperini’s changing tactics.

At times, he might be used as an advanced playmaker with two strikers above him and, on other occasions, play as a right winger in a 3-4-2-1.

Bailey’s experience and talent are very promising, suggesting that he can be even more successful than Lookman with Gasperini.

Lookman was not as experienced nor as talented as Bailey when he joined Atalanta.

That said, Bailey would certainly guarantee a higher goalscoring rate per match than the rest of the wingers, as his finishing skills are better than those of the attacking players at Roma.

The same applies to his key passing abilities; however, the inconsistency in terms of performances from one season to the next represents an issue that needs to be monitored by Gasperini, as Bailey showed during his career that he can have a magnificent season in terms of goal contribution and then have a very poor one in the season that follows.

Moreover, helping Bailey integrate well within the team, and more importantly, helping him succeed in understanding Gasperini’s tactics and deal well with the required chemistry that he will need to build with the two other attacking players that he will play with, will be crucial for him to shine at Roma.

Bailey’s ability to move well without the ball and deal well with tight spaces when he receives the ball makes him someone who will be very useful in terms of triangular combinations with his potential two teammates in attack.

Furthermore, exploiting his passing skills and ability to break defensive lines represents another trait to consider and exploit within Roma’s attack.

Bailey can work with any of Roma’s existing attacking players and be extremely useful.

He can get the team out of complicated situations with quick and accurate passing combinations, whether on the wings or through the middle of the pitch.

However, he cannot be used as a “target man” like Gasperini did with De Ketelaere because Bailey is not as tall as De Ketelaere and is not very powerful in the air.

Therefore, we can expect Bailey at Roma to achieve similar results to those Gasperini achieved with Lookman at Atalanta.

The difference is that Bailey can play on both wings without issues since he uses both feet well.

He offers numerous solutions in terms of positions, unlike Lookman, who is somewhat more limited in this regard.

Another important difference is that Bailey comes to Roma as a confirmed player who, unlike Lookman, has had some very rich experiences at some of the most powerful leagues and against some of the toughest opponents.

All this information suggests that Bailey has a very high chance of succeeding at Roma after he recovers from his unfortunate injury since his arrival.

Conclusion

Leon Bailey’s move to Roma will definitely add more quality to the team’s attacking performances, no matter which attacking position he plays, given that he has experience playing in most of them already.

The challenge will be to avoid injuries and quickly get accustomed to Gasperini’s playing system and ideas.

Bailey’s talent and experience will likely enable him to quickly grasp the Italian head coach’s ideas and apply them on the pitch.
