Jack Grealish Scout Report At Manchester City 2024/2025: City Misfit, Perfect For Spurs? – Player Analysis

Jack Grealish’s fourth season at Manchester City has shown a conspicuous decline in playing time, raising questions about his place within Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Each passing year seems to erode his role further, culminating not only in his omission from the starting XI but, at times, from the matchday squad altogether.

Guardiola’s emphatic response: “Who said I’m not happy with him?!”— following Grealish’s absence in Manchester City’s final league game has only intensified scrutiny.

The situation was compounded by his non-involvement in the 2024/2025 FA Cup Final, a puzzling exclusion given his strong performances throughout the earlier rounds up to the semi-final.

This sequence of events has cast uncertainty over Jack Grealish’s future at the club, and speculation regarding a potential departure has become increasingly credible.

Rather than being the audacious dribbler who terrorised the Premier League, Grealish’s role at City has often been reduced to that of a width-holder who recycles possession.

His creative instincts have been constrained by the demands of Guardiola’s game model.

There is a growing sense that a move away from Manchester may be necessary if he is to recapture the form that once made him one of the league’s most exhilarating wingers.

Now approaching his 30th birthday, Grealish faces a crossroads in his career: the opportunity to restart and play football the way that suits him best.

This analysis will examine Jack Grealish’s attributes, the extent to which they have been either harnessed or hindered under Guardiola’s system and the tactical tensions during his City career.

Finally, it will consider a potential destination where Jack Grealish can re-establish himself.

Jack Grealish Playing Style: Elite Ball-Carrier & Spatial Manipulator

Jack Grealish’s excellence is rooted in his exceptional ball-carrying ability.

He tends to play as a left winger or left-sided attacking midfielder, utilising his powerful lower body and core strength to withstand pressure during progressive dribbles.

His build allows him to maintain close control of the ball under pressure and helps him execute high-frequency carries through congested central areas and along the wide channels.

The pizza chart compares Jack Grealish’s performance to that of other Premier League Left Attacking Midfielders (LAMFs), with 50% marking the median for players in his position.

Grealish performs well above the median in metrics such as opposition penalty area touches, passes per 90, accurate passes, and received passes.

Technically, Grealish’s low centre of gravity and ability to shift the ball with his right foot grant him the capacity to remain balanced even at pace or changing changes of direction.

He manipulates time and space, and uses subtle feints and decelerations to attract opponents into overcommitting.

This allows him to exploit micro-spaces either by driving into vacated zones himself or passing to teammates who have benefited from the defensive dislocation he creates.

Grealish’s game revolves around the understanding of relationism.

He is not bound to traditional left-sided touchline play, but rather likes to roam into interior pockets and half-spaces, responding to his teammates’ positional needs and the emergent structures of the opposition’s blocks.

Additionally, he enjoys occupying zones where he can receive the ball with time to turn, drawing multiple markers and creating numerical advantages elsewhere on the pitch.

He excels at ‘give-and-go’ combinations and initiates third-man runs in these situations.

As shown in an FA Cup game against Plymouth Argyle, Grealish receives the ball and is quickly closed down by a defender who approaches with a straight stance.

Grealish drops his shoulder and exploits the gap between two Plymouth players, helped by Kevin De Bruyne dragging one away to create more space.

Grealish then dribbles into the final third and delivers a dangerous pass for Erling Haaland to receive.

While Grealish’s strengths in ball retention, progression, and manipulation of defensive shape are of an elite standard, there remains scope for development in his final third shooting productivity.

If he evolved into a more consistent goal threat from advantageous positions, his value as a multi-dimensional attacker would increase.

Nonetheless, his profile as a carrier, facilitator, and spatial manipulator shows that he remains one of the most dangerous players in the league when optimally utilised.

To fully appreciate the complexity of Grealish’s season, it is essential to examine the statistical context that has shaped perceptions of his current campaign.

It has been an underwhelming season by conventional metrics that are most visible to the public eye.

He has scored one goal and provided one assist from 20 league appearances and 1521 minutes played across all competitions (the equivalent of 16 full matches).

Nevertheless, a deeper dive into advanced metrics paints a better picture.

Jack Grealish remains an elite ball carrier, registering 7.71 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which places him in the 99th percentile among positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues.

He also ranks at the 99th percentile for carries into the final third (4.61 per 90) and stands in the 89th percentile for fouls drawn (3.1).

The figures highlight Grealish’s still influence when it comes to ball progression and territorial advancement of the highest calibre.

However, while these metrics confirm this, watching Grealish at Manchester City often lacks the spontaneity he once had.

In contrast, his role at City can be seen more as systematised and shaped by positional discipline and collective patterns.

The Tactical Dissonance Between Jack Grealish & Manchester City

The tactical friction between Jack Grealish’s system and Guardiola’s lies in the orchestration of tempo and the cognitive demands of positional play.

Guardiola’s game model tends to be predicated on ball circulation, collective rhythm, and maintaining optimal distances between players.

This is to disorganise opposition blocks through coordinated team movement rather than individual incursions.

In this game model, wingers are required to recycle possession through quick lay-offs, one- or two-touch combinations, and off-the-ball movement to open up passing lanes and execute automatisms.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Untitled-video-Made-with-Clipchamp-1.mp4

As shown in the UEFA Champions League group stage against PSG, Grealish receives the ball and, instead of passing forward to Rico Lewis, who runs behind the defence, holds onto possession.

He has space to drive forward but waits for his teammates to get into position before making a safe forward pass rather than attacking directly.

Grealish, by contrast, is at his most influential when given licence to accelerate play through extended ball carries, manipulate tempo through deceleration and engage defenders in constant 1v1s.

Jérémy Doku already fulfils this, and another player fulfilling this may disrupt the collective rhythm and spacing.

Furthermore, Guardiola’s wingers must provide a consistent vertical threat by making aggressive runs beyond the defensive line and pinning full-backs to generate depth.

Grealish’s natural tendency, however, is to drop into deeper or more central zones to receive on his feet, often operating in front of defensive structures rather than attacking the space behind them.

This reduces the team’s verticality, compresses the playing area, and makes it easier for opponents to defend compactly.

Additionally, within Guardiola’s game model, wide players are reference points.

Their primary role is to maintain width.

In this league fixture against Aston Villa, the clip shows Rico Lewis passing the ball to Grealish.

Rather than taking on his defender, Grealish opts to recycle possession by playing the ball to Mateo Kovačić.

When Kovačić cannot find a forward option, the play moves backwards to retain possession.

Throughout the sequence, Grealish maintains his wide position.

He is holding the full-back in place but doesn’t use his dribbling ability to challenge the defender or drive the attack forward.

Grealish, conversely, is an archetype of the creative instigator.

He is more comfortable when testing blocks through overloads and spontaneous movement than when maintaining a rigid spatial reference.

His natural inclination toward improvisation and creative licence runs counter to the tactical discipline and rehearsed patterns foundational to Guardiola’s approach.

The result is a player whose individual brilliance, though theoretically valuable, can become a source of tactical tension within a system that prioritises collective coherence over individual expression.

Why Tottenham Could Bring the Best Version of Jack Grealish

Moving to Tottenham Hotspur would be a strong tactical and personal opportunity for Jack Grealish.

It is an environment where individual interpretation and improvisation has been encouraged in recent years under Ange Postecoglou‘s management.

This freedom, should it continue under a new Spurs manager, would allow Grealish to utilise his natural instincts for spatial manipulation and creative movement — traits that made him a talismanic figure at Aston Villa.

Grealish, whose progressive carries and ability to draw multiple defenders rank among the European elite, would be empowered to drive at opposition without the constraint of ball circulation for its own sake.

Tottenham’s use of rotations and passing triangles between the winger, full-back, and No. 8 create ideal contexts for Grealish’s ability to work in tight spaces and play quick combinations and third-man releases.

Moreover, the system can emphasise central overloads via inverted wingers.

This increases possession security and attacking unpredictability in the half-spaces—the very areas where Grealish excels at linking play and manipulating defensive shape.

Besides the tactical fit, the human dimension is particularly salient at this point in Grealish’s career.

He has experienced a difficult campaign at City and could benefit from both the presence of familiar faces such as James Maddison, whose style and personality align well with Grealish.

The prospect of a new manager at Tottenham brings added appeal.

New managers arrive with fresh ideas and, importantly, no pre-existing judgments.

Grealish would be assessed on his own merits—a clean slate, free from any baggage or bias.

An environment like this allows creative players to express themselves and be valued for their unique qualities, which could help Grealish rediscover his expressive best and restore his confidence.

In addition, with Son Heung-min’s recent dip in efficiency, there is also an opportunity for Grealish to make the left side his own.

The added lure of Champions League football adds to the appeal and provides Grealish with both a tactical environment and a competitive stage to reignite his career.

Although more defensive coverage or someone who can cover will be needed, Grealish brings excitement and can form great relationships on the field.

Conclusion

As tactical demands and human factors converge, the prospect of a move could revive his best qualities and open a new chapter for the elite ball carrier.

But the question lingers: will Jack Grealish choose familiarity and comfort, or go to an environment that empowers his individuality and artistry?
