Real Madrid Vs Man City 20252026

Real Madrid hosted Manchester City at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in a classic UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match; the game ended in a commanding 3-0 win for the hosts.

Real Madrid returned to their UEFA Champions League triumphs with this big win and made things easier for themselves ahead of the second leg despite numerous absences in the team.

Real Madrid succeeded in exploiting Manchester City’s weaknesses well enough, thanks to the quality of the Los Blancos attacking players and their ability to be as crucial as needed in counterattacks.

On the other hand, Manchester City looked a bit passive in both the defensive and attacking phases in this match, failing to surprise Real Madrid in attack and defend well enough to block Real Madrid’s attacks.

In this tactical analysis article, we explore how Real Madrid exploited Manchester City’s poor approach to the game and shed light on Manchester City’s attacking issues.

Real Madrid Vs Manchester City Lineups & Formations

Álvaro Arbeloa started the match in a 4-4-2 formation, with Thibaut Courtois as goalkeeper and Dean Huijsen alongside Antonio Rüdiger as the centre-back pairing.

Ferland Mendy started at left-back, while Trent Alexander-Arnold started at right-back.

The midfield was composed of Thiago Pitarch and Aurélien Tchouaméni as central midfielders, Federico Valverde as a right winger, and Arda Güler as a left winger.

The attacking duo was made up of Vinícius Júnior and Brahim Díaz, with Vinícius leaning frequently towards the left wing and Díaz getting the freedom to move everywhere inside the final third.

On the other hand,  Pep Guardiola opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, relying on Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, and a defensive line of Rúben Dias and Marc Guéhi as centre-backs, flanked by Abdukodir Khusanov on the right and Nico O’Reilly on the left as full-backs.

Bernardo Silva and Rodri were the two central midfielders, with Antoine Semenyo being the advanced playmaker, Jérémy Doku and Savinho playing on the wings, and Erling Haaland being the team’s central striker.

Real Madrid Masterclass Attacking Performance

The match started with both teams trying to dominate possession and penetrate inside the opposing penalty box, with Real Madrid trying to advance through the wings more often, and Manchester City focusing further on recoveries and counterattacks.

Manchester City’s counterattacks looked very dangerous, as their transition from defence to attack was usually very quick in this match, with Doku‘s penetrations and key passes from the left wing as the primary solution.

Manchester City Initial Counterattacks & Final Third Decision-Making

However, the team failed to exploit Doku’s very dangerous penetrations and passes towards the box on more than one occasion, missing opportunities that could have led to goals.

Haaland failed to position himself well enough to meet those passes like he usually does, and those who joined the box were unable to deal well with the passes as well.

One of the first dangerous attempts by Manchester City featured a very quick counterattack, started by Silva, who advanced into the final third, served Doku, and continued his run towards the box.

Doku was outstanding in surpassing his direct marker and serving his teammates in the box thanks to an accurate left-footed pass that Silva missed strangely despite being well-positioned to opt for a first-time shot.

In fact, Silva couldn’t coordinate his body in time to shoot the ball effectively with his left foot, despite being left-footed and having the time and space to do so.

This was a strange miss from Silva, who touched the ball but did not shoot on goal.

Silva also prevented Haaland from scoring, as the latter was just behind him and could have exploited the opportunity if Silva had let the ball pass between his legs towards the Norwegian striker (since Silva was not ready to shoot).

Silva’s wrong execution and decision-making in this action prevented Manchester City from scoring an early goal that could have made things much easier for the team.

Real Madrid Reaction & Exploitation Of Manchester City High Defensive Block

Real Madrid exploited Manchester City’s repeated attempts and their growing confidence in their ability to score, while also keeping up the pressure on Real Madrid’s build-up, as City increased their high-pressing efforts and played with a higher defensive block when they noticed that Real Madrid were a bit vulnerable at the back.

Real Madrid exploited this thanks to Courtois’ very intelligent long pass at the back of O’Reilly and towards the forward run of Valverde.

This allowed Valverde to receive a perfect pass, with Manchester City’s entire defensive line exposed.

Valverde’s first touch was crucial to the action’s success or failure.

His first touch allowed him to advance very quickly and take a distance from O’Reilly while getting closer to the goal, before successfully dribbling past Donnarumma and reaching the ball at the right spot to score it.

The action highlights Real Madrid’s intelligent exploitation of the opponent’s defensive weaknesses and lack of attention to the defensive phase.

In this action, O’Reilly did not mark Valverde tightly and underestimated the possibility of him getting the ball and creating danger, as he let him make a run in behind without a strong reaction.

Furthermore, Donnarumma should have instructed O’Reilly to keep following Valverde when he noticed that the latter was escaping at his back, as communication from goalkeepers is necessary in such situations.

This goal action highlights the quality and intelligence of Real Madrid’s players, whether in key passing or in stamina, dribbling, and finishing.

At the same time, it sheds light on Manchester City’s weak defending and lack of attention in terms of direct marking.

Real Madrid Attacking Variations & Use Of Valverde As An Attacking Joker

Real Madrid kept exploiting their momentum by winning duels all over the pitch and succeeding to score a second goal thanks to a magnificent work from Díaz, Vinícius, and Valverde.

The action began with an explosive penetration by Díaz, who advanced into the final third but was not supported in time by his teammates, so he passed the ball to Vinícius on the left wing.

The latter noticed that Manchester City’s defence was not very well organised and decided to cut inside and use his pace rather than opt for a backward pass.

This decision allowed him to get past his direct marker and find himself in a suitable position to provide an assist to Valverde, who turned into a striker and made the necessary movement in behind the City backline.

This time, he moved in the same way as in the first goal action, except that he moved centrally rather than on the wing.

Valverde received a key pass from Vinícius, controlled it with his right foot while continuing his run, and shot with his left foot towards the opposite angle, an action that requires a lot of intelligence and goalscoring instinct to succeed.

Moreover, it is important to note that Valverde was helped by O’Reilly’s passive man-marking and defending once again, knowing that the latter left too much space for Valverde when he made the forward run and even after he received the ball.

O’Reilly should have gotten much closer to Valverde, especially when the latter received the ball, as he should have at least attempted a sliding tackle to block or deflect the shot.

None of this happened, and this confirms Manchester City’s defensive weaknesses, especially on that left flank, but also from Guéhi, who left Valverde advance in behind.

This passive defending from Manchester City cost them two goals that could have been avoided.

Real Madrid Masterclass Third Goal: Brahim Díaz Intelligent Assist, Federico Valverde Key Movements & Decisions Inside The Box

Each goal of Real Madrid’s three scored goals were more beautiful than each other, knowing that scoring three goals against Manchester City in less than one half means that this team knows exactly how to exploit their momentum well enough, exploiting Manchester City’s defensive weaknesses and passivity in numerous situations.

They succeeded in exploiting that mainly thanks to quick counterattacks that punished Manchester City’s slow retreat of their defensive line.

The fact that the Citizens conceded goals due to pressing high with a high defensive block, and then decided to continue with the same approach, led to a third goal.

Courtois was quick enough to serve his teammates in such situations, and in this third goal, he made sure the ball reached Vinícius quickly so that he could penetrate from the left wing and exploit the spaces left by their defence.

Vinícius was outstanding in getting past his direct marker and finding himself completely unmarked in front of Manchester City’s centre-backs.

And despite passing the ball to Güler, then to Pitarch, Real Madrid did not lose momentum, mainly thanks to Pitarch’s decision to keep the ball in that area rather than opt for a safer backward pass.

Passing to Díaz was the decision that kept this attack alive.

But more importantly, as the ball went to Díaz, Valverde’s immediate decision to attack the space behind Manchester City’s players, who were surrounding Díaz, was the key to creating this action.

Added to that, Díaz’s key lobbed pass between four opponents to the direction of Valverde’s run confirms Díaz’s ability to guarantee quality in tight spaces and in complicated situations.

That pass allowed Valverde to eliminate Guéhi with a very beautiful yet very complicated Sombrero.

Valverde made that Sombrero with a first touch while running, before the ball touched the turf, meaning it was a very intelligent and quick decision to eliminate Guéhi from the action with a single touch.

Valverde’s intelligence and crucial touches inside the box continued to impress as he shot the ball towards the left angle before the ball came down following that Sombrero, as he knew that controlling it before shooting would have allowed Donnarumma to get to the ball before him, and that shooting immediately would surprise Donnarumma.

The masterclass sombrero and finishing decisions confirmed that Valverde’s performance in this match was stellar, and he can easily play as a false nine, as he interpreted the role of a striker perfectly on more than one occasion.

That said, playing in midfield and making such remarkable penetrations would be better, as it makes him more unpredictable.

Real Madrid Masterclass Third Goal: Brahim Díaz Intelligent Assist And Federico Valverde Key Movements And Decisions Inside The Box

Conclusion

Manchester City committed some serious defensive errors against a team with outstanding attacking players despite their own absences.

The wrong defensive approach and the insistence on maintaining the same high-pressing, high-block tactics allowed Real Madrid to score three goals against Manchester City.

Furthermore, Manchester City failed in attack and were unable to create anything different or dangerous against Real Madrid’s defence, relying instead on Doku’s penetrations from the left wing and crosses into the box.

This attacking solution was predictable to Real Madrid’s defenders, and therefore, they succeeded in limiting those threats.

Manchester City will have to give more than 100% in the second leg and, more importantly, change the way they approach the game against Real Madrid to make their comeback possible.

Otherwise, it will be difficult for them to disrupt this powerful Real Madrid.
