Atalanta hosted Bayern Munich at the New Balance Arena for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, and the game ended in a heavy 1-6 loss for the hosts.
The result was shocking yet somehow expected, given the gap in quality between the two teams’ players.
More importantly, Bayern Munich were very organised and ambitious going into this game and did not underestimate their opponent, which helped them a lot psychologically.
In fact, Bayern Munich secured 90% of their qualification to the next round following their outstanding performance in this match, making the second leg less decisive in terms of the result, as everything had already been decided in this first leg.
In this tactical analysis, however, the focus will be on Atalanta’s game plan, the changes made to surprise Bayern Munich, and why it failed in this match.
Atalanta Vs Bayern Munich Lineups & Formations
Raffaele Palladino started the match using a 4-4-2 formation, with Marco Carnesecchi as the goalkeeper, Sead Kolašinac and Isak Hien as centre-backs, with both Davide Zappacosta and Lorenzo Bernasconi as full-backs.
The midfield consisted of Marten de Roon and Mario Pašalić as central midfielders, with Kamaldeen Sulemana and Nicola Zalewski as wingers, and an attacking duo formed of the team’s two strikers: Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Krstović.
On the other hand, Vincent Kompany played in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Jonas Urbig started between the sticks.
The back four were Josip Stanišić (right-back), Dayot Upamecano (right-centre-back), Jonathan Tah (left centre-back), and Konrad Laimer as a left-back.
The midfield was formed of Aleksandar Pavlović and Joshua Kimmich as the double pivot, with Serge Gnabry as the attacking midfielder and both Luis Diáz and Michael Olise as wingers behind the main striker, Nicolas Jackson.

Atalanta’s Ambitious Attacking Game Plan & Why It Failed
Palladino tried to surprise Bayern Munich with a completely different game plan and formation compared to the team’s usual lineup, as he started the match in a 4-4-2 with both main strikers starting together as the attacking duo.
He did not use a back-three defence and avoided the usual 3-4-2-1 formation, mainly to adopt a more attacking approach and press a bit higher against Bayern Munich, knowing they concede dangerous counterattacks but still taking the risk.
This was mainly done because Palladino thought that the only way to battle Bayern Munich and try to surprise them would be to disrupt their build-up and push their defensive and midfield lines into committing mistakes, thanks to a strict man-marking plan.
His reliance on this aspect was too risky and could have worked for Atalanta, but unfortunately for him and for his team, Bayern Munich were too attentive and intelligent in dealing with the situation.
In fact, Atalanta played with a 4-2-4 formation on the pitch, with both wingers Sulemana and Zalewski advancing to accompany both strikers and press high on Bayern Munich’s full-backs, guaranteeing a man to man marking on all of Bayern Munich’s defenders especially during the build-up phase.
Atalanta Initial Threats
This was initially successful and useful for Atalanta, but they failed to exploit it effectively in the opening minutes of the game.
Sulemana had the chance to score very early in the game as he exploited Krstović’s excellent ball protection and made the forward run needed at the back of Bayern Munich’s defensive line.
And as he received the pass while running, he failed to advance with it, making a poor first touch that allowed his direct marker to intercept the ball and prevent Sulemana from finishing a very dangerous opportunity.
Sulemana should have dealt better with this situation, as everything in the action was perfect except his handling of this one-on-one battle, knowing he had the space to take a first-time shot, cut inside with a body feint, or dribble in another way.
Atalanta’s main problem in this match was that they lacked quality in decisive one vs one duels against Bayern Munich’s defenders.

Atalanta High Recoveries & Unsuccessful Decisions Inside The Final Third
In the first minutes of the match, Atalanta forced Bayern Munich to opt for complicated build-up play, such as through passes in space, which were intercepted by Atalanta’s man-marking system.
This allowed Atalanta to launch quick attacking transitions on more than one occasion.
But Atalanta failed to deal well with the attacking transitions created by Bayern Munich, giving the impression that they focused too much on preparing to stop and limit Bayern Munich’s build-up and attacking plans while giving less importance to their own attacking solutions.
Atalanta’s attacking play lacked concentration and chemistry more than once, as both Krstović and Scamacca are not used to playing together, and this was obvious in many situations.
The following example highlights one of the occasions when Atalanta missed an opportunity after a recovery and counterattack, mainly due to Krstović’s wrong decision at the edge of the box.
In fact, Krstović should have opted to control the ball quickly and go for a curved shot towards the opposite angle, since he had the time and space to do so before a defender arrived.
Instead, he opted for a misplaced back-heel pass to Scamacca, as he did not notice that Pavlović was waiting to intercept it behind Krstović.
Krstović’s idea would indeed have been perfect if Pavlović had been there, since it would have made an excellent assist on a Scamacca shot.
However, such small details in the final third make the difference, especially in such encounters and against big teams like Bayern Munich.
Exploiting such opportunities with more reliable solutions would have helped Atalanta score early, as they succeeded in making high recoveries and preventing Bayern Munich from building attacks, especially in the early minutes of the match.
However, Atalanta failed to avoid rushing in their attacking decision-making whenever they reached the box, and that’s mainly what prevented them from exploiting their game plan like they wanted.

Atalanta Single Goal Action
Atalanta failed to exploit their momentum and conceded goals mainly due to poor set-piece defending and poor marking in certain situations, knowing that Bayern Munich’s attacking players were difficult to mark tightly with a man-marking system and that double-marking certain players like Olise and Gnabry was not in place.
Furthermore, Atalanta paid the price of choosing to play with an attacking formation, as Bayern Munich had numerical superiority during most of their attacks, given that two to four Atalanta players remained high up the pitch due to their playing system.
And against powerful attacking players like Bayern Munich’s, it is complicated to limit the threat of such attacks while being in numerical inferiority inside the team’s own third.
Atalanta could not keep up with Bayern Munich’s attacking quality, and the fact that they left a lot of space at the back to them aggravated things for Atalanta’s defence, resulting in them conceding six goals.
It is important to note that Atalanta could not keep up with Bayern Munich’s vertical key passing, dribbling, and intelligent off-the-ball movement.
All of these, in addition to Bayern Munich’s recurrent high recoveries, made things very complicated for Atalanta, knowing that the final score could have been larger if the goalkeeper had not been able to save more than one dangerous shot.
That said, Atalanta were able to score one single goal thanks to Raoul Bellanova’s remarkable acceleration on the right wing in a counterattack initiated by a recovery and a through pass from De Roon.
Krstović’s presence inside the box supported Bellanova’s acceleration and, more importantly, Pašalić’s penetration towards the box, allowing Pašalić to finish the action in the net following Krstović’s battle with the goalkeeper, which favoured Pašalić’s finish.
The goal action will most likely not affect Bayern Munich’s qualification, which became certain following this first leg, unless a half-miracle happens.
However, the action makes Atalanta regret not having attempted attacking transitions with similar accelerations and similar penetrations from midfielders to add numerical superiority inside the box alongside both strikers.
The goal action also confirms that using Sulemana as a right winger instead of Bellanova or Lazar Samardžić (who would have been a good starting option as well) was unsuccessful, as Sulemana was unable to make the difference, even though he was relatively successful in some duels.
In fact, Sulemana lacked the stamina to continue his penetrations and was not explosive enough to get past more than one Bayern Munich defender, which limited his wing play and, in turn, the team’s counterattacking threats.
Almost the same applies to Zalewski, who was not as dangerous as needed, and that stresses the importance of Atalanta’s former difference maker on the left wing, Ademola Lookman.

Conclusion
Atalanta learned a lesson out of this match following a stellar Bayern Munich performance that punished Atalanta’s ambitious attacking game plan.
In fact, Palladino’s idea was courageous and intelligent, but he was not helped by the tools at his disposal, since the quality of the available players did not align with his desired match plans against a team like Bayern Munich.
On the other hand, Bayern Munich confirmed that they will be challenging seriously for the title this season, as they look more confident and powerful than in previous seasons.
With plenty of outstanding attacking talent and the intelligent management of these players, Bayern Munich promise to be a difficult opponent for any other side in this tournament going forward.
