Manchester United faced AFC Bournemouth in Gameweek 16 of the 2025/2026 Premier League campaign, and it was one of the most entertaining games of the season, ending in a 4-4 draw.
It was, however, not so entertaining for both teams’ players and managers, especially for Manchester United, who were winning in the final minutes of the game before conceding the equalising goal.
Despite the loss, the Red Devils put on a solid attacking performance, showing they were very dynamic and ambitious in the attacking phase, and that’s what the team should build on for the upcoming games.
However, the defensive performance was worrying as the team conceded four goals at home and failed to protect their lead.
That’s what this tactical analysis will try to present, spot, and explore Manchester United’s defensive mistakes in this match and how to address them.
Manchester United Vs Bournemouth Lineups & Formations
Rúben Amorim started the match in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Senne Lammens as the goalkeeper and a defensive line of Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, and Luke Shaw as centre-backs.
The midfield featured Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes as central midfielders, with Diogo Dalot and Amad Diallo as wing-backs.
In attack, Manchester United relied on both Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo as advanced playmakers behind the striker, Matheus Cunha.
For AFC Bournemouth, Andoni Iraola opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Đorđe Petrović as the goalkeeper, Adam Smith as the right-back, Bafodé Diakité and Marcos Senesi as centre-backs, and Adrien Truffert as the left-back.
The midfield featured Marcus Tavernier and Tyler Adams as central midfielders, Antoine Semenyo and Álex Jiménez as wingers, and Justin Kluivert as an advanced playmaker just behind the main striker, Evanilson.

Manchester United Defensive Dilemmas & Poor Counterattacking Defence
Amorim came to Manchester United with the conviction of playing with a reliance on a 3-4-3 formation or one of its variations, like the 3-4-2-1.
However, being unable to be tactically fluid enough to prepare alternatives to it and to have plan B and C formations to use when necessary can be blamed on the Portuguese head coach.
In circumstances like those Man United are going through due to multiple absences in defence, it would have been much more useful to opt for an already prepared back-four formation if the team had been trained to play in such formations.
However, Amorim chose from the start to rely on the same formation, despite potential absences in more than one area.
This obliged him to rely on inexperienced names like Heaven in defence, with both Yoro and Shaw leading the defensive line.
The absences of Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt impacted the leadership and organisation of the back line, as Lisandro Martínez is not being used as a starting option either.
This led to having a shaky defensive line that can be easily disturbed by any EPL team.
The combination of Shaw’s slow reactions and inability to be a defensively solid centre-back, as well as Heaven’s lack of experience at the highest level, made it very complicated for Manchester United to concede a low number of goals in this match.
And what made it even more complicated for Manchester United’s defence was that midfielders and attacking players were not as disciplined or helpful as needed in key moments, which aggravated the team’s defensive issues and led to conceding very dangerous actions.
Amorim indeed made some experiments and changes regarding the attacking aspect; however, the team remains very vulnerable after losing possession.
That’s not only about playing with a back three without quality defenders in those roles, but also about the team’s overall organisation and attitude after losing the ball.
Manchester United Lack Of Attacking Players’ Disciplined Defensive Support
More discipline is needed from the attacking players in terms of marking during set-pieces and in open play, as the defenders are not the only ones responsible for the defensive phase.
The following Bournemouth dangerous action further highlights the importance of the attacking players’ support during the non-possession phase, as it shows how Mbeumo was reluctant to follow his direct opponent, even after noticing his movement toward the ball in front of him.
Mbeumo was relying on his defensive teammates to stop them from scoring; however, it should have been the task of Mbeumo to follow closely and prevent him from reaching the ball by either getting to the ball first or putting his body to prevent him from continuing his run with full speed and therefore oblige him to miss the cross.

Manchester United Gaps In Defence & Slow Retreating
Manchester United conceded four goals, and some, if not all, could have been avoided if they had defended with greater intelligence and compactness.
In fact, the lack of chemistry between the defenders, as well as the lack of support for the back-three line, was obvious in their game against Bournemouth.
Furthermore, the individual mistakes were highly impactful because some errors were unexpected, and the teammates were not reactive enough to cover for the mistaken player.
During the first Bournemouth goal action, Shaw made a poor pass control, which allowed Semenyo to intercept the ball and find himself unmarked inside Manchester United’s final third.
Manchester United were not prepared for such scenarios, and this was evident in how they reacted to the interception: the defensive block was relatively high, and all midfielders and attacking players were in the centre of the pitch.
More importantly, failing to retreat quickly to cover Shaw and support Heaven in defending against Evanilson and Semenyo left Bournemouth vulnerable to scoring.
Heaven was obliged to keep marking Evanilson because he was his direct opponent and because he knew that if he leaned left to cover for Shaw’s side and tried to stop Semenyo, Evanilson would be completely unmarked inside the box.
And even if Yoro would cover for Heaven and mark Evanilson instead of him, Jiménez would be completely unmarked on the other wing.
What happened was that Heaven kept marking Evanilson, and Yoro made a mistake by doubling the marking on Evanilson and overlooking Jiménez’s advance on the left wing.
This gave Semenyo a very suitable pass inside the box, which he didn’t need because he opted to finish himself.
All of this stresses the importance of the midfielders’ and the wing-backs’ support in such actions.
All of Casemiro, Fernandes, Dalot, and Diallo should have retreated to try to support their teammates and avoid a numerical disadvantage against Bournemouth.
Failing to remain balanced, especially when losing the ball and not having clear procedures to follow when the ball is intercepted, is worrying and can only lead to conceding more than one goal per match.
This leads us to the urgent need for Manchester United to reorganise their defensive plans and movements without the ball, especially after losing possession, to avoid opponents’ counterattacks, as in this case.

Manchester United Failure To Stop Strikers
In this match, Manchester United once again confirmed that their defensive organisation allows opposing strikers to shine and score goals at the expense of a defensive line that needs greater compactness, greater tactical awareness, and more crucial interventions, and the ability to win defensive duels.
Bournemouth’s second goal can only confirm the vulnerability and the non-decisive attempts of the Red Devils’ defenders to intercept crucial passes or to stop strikers from shooting on goal.
The main issue here is that Manchester United’s defenders allowed too much space for Evanilson to receive the ball, run with it, and shoot.
In fact, neither Heaven nor Yoro were reactive enough to intercept the pass, nor were they aggressive enough to physically disrupt Evanilson and push him to shoot unbalanced, or even steal the ball from him with a sliding tackle.
Heaven was passive in following Evanilson as the latter was more anticipatory of his teammates’ through passes, leaving Heaven behind.
In this situation, Heaven could have attempted a sliding tackle earlier, but preferred to follow Evanilson as he touched the ball and intended to shoot, which confirms that Heaven was passive during this action and delayed in his decision-making.
Yoro can also be blamed for not supporting Heaven in this situation and for being too slow in his backward run, which prevented him from intercepting the pass and from following Evanilson in time.
This slow, passive, and tactically unintelligent defending is causing problems for Manchester United against most EPL sides, especially those with dangerous, quick attacking players.

Manchester United’s Inability To Defend Counterattacks
Lammens was also responsible for conceding a direct free-kick aimed at his supposedly protected angle, which adds to Manchester United’s bad luck and defensive issues.
But more importantly, conceding decisive goals in the last minutes of the match after securing the advantage is more worrying for Manchester United, as that was the goal that cost them two points.
Even with the use of Martínez, things did not change for the better because Manchester United dealt badly with the loss of the ball once again, and that was the direct reason for conceding the equalising goal.
Bournemouth looked capable of scoring whenever they intercepted the ball in midfield, because Manchester United failed to reorganise quickly enough after losing the ball.
The recurring poor marking and defending against Bournemouth’s counter-attacks proved decisive, as Cunha lost the ball inside the team’s own half, and the team failed to stop Bournemouth’s quick attacking transition.
Although Diallo was quick enough to retreat and try to prevent the pass, his opponent was quicker at the last second.
And once again, both Heaven and Martínez were passive in marking Eli Junior Kroupi as they did not expect the pass to be made.
However, even if they were certain of Diallo being capable of intercepting the ball, both Heaven and Martínez should have been much closer to Kroupi, as it was not logical to keep that distance between them and Kroupi despite not having to mark anyone else inside the final third at that time.
Allowing a lot of space and eventually time to opponents can only lead to conceding dangerous chances and goals, and that’s what happened following Manchester United’s poor marking of Kroupi in this action.
Manchester United should consider intensifying training in collective and individual marking, as well as in their quick, automatic defensive reorganisation during counter-attacks, to prevent such dangerous actions.
Also, reducing the number of missed passes and interceptions in their own half can help prevent more counter-attacks, and this is something that the team’s midfield and attacking players, in particular, need to fix ahead of the upcoming games.

Conclusion
Overall, Manchester United will need to revise and address their defensive issues by intensifying training on defending counterattacks and doing their best to reduce the number of conceded counterattacks per game, especially by reducing the number of intercepted passes or recoveries inside their own half.
Furthermore, one or two defensive reinforcements could be very helpful to the team during the winter transfer window, especially if the absences of Maguire and De Ligt lasted much longer.
