After impressing during his loan spell with Aston Villa in the Premier League last season, Marco Asensio (182cm/6’0”, 76kg/167lbs) ended up making a permanent move from Paris Saint-Germain to Fenerbahçe for a reported €7.5m fee on the first of September.

At the time of writing, Asensio has made 24 goal contributions in 24 Turkish Süper Lig appearances this term, proving his value and top-level capability.

This is reminiscent of Mesut Özil’s 2021/2022 season at Fenerbahçe, when he too showed plenty of quality despite taking a step down in level from one of Europe’s top-five leagues with Arsenal, but Asensio has arguably been far more impressive.

Wesley Sneijder made a similar move to Türkiye with Fenerbahçe’s rivals Galatasaray back in 2013, and he similarly delivered at the level you’d expect of a world-class playmaker.

This kind of move is not unprecedented; it’s a path that’s fairly well trodden; Marco Asensio is the latest iteration, and he’s doing it at a very high standard.

This Marco Asensio scout report and player analysis shares analysis of Marco Asensio’s style of play and tactical role with Domenico Tedesco’s Fenerbahçe in the 2025/2026 Turkish Süper Lig and UEFA Europa League campaigns.

We’ll deploy a combination of data analysis and tactical analysis to highlight where Marco Asensio has stood out this term and how Tedesco is using him to accentuate the clear strengths in his game.

Marco Asensio Stats

Figure 1 presents key 2025/2026 data on Marco Asensio in the form of percentile ranks benchmarking the Spanish playmaker against other attacking midfielders who have played in the leagues just below Europe’s top-five leagues in terms of quality (the Turkish Süper Lig, EFL Championship, Belgian Pro League, Dutch Eredivisie, Portuguese Primeira Liga, Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and Argentinian Liga Profesional de Fútbol) this season.

All percentile ranks shown are based on either raw Wyscout metrics or custom-built metrics made using weighted combinations of raw Wyscout metrics.

Marco Asensio Percentile Ranks 2025/2026

MA Percentiles
Figure 1.

The radar is divided into attacking metrics, possession metrics and defending metrics.

It’s clear from a quick glance that Marco Asensio has been elite in most of our attacking and possession metrics, though he hasn’t been very involved in his team’s defensive phases.

Beginning with the attacking metrics, Marco Asensio boasts a strong xG Contribution per 90 (87th percentile), pointing to his ability to frequently occupy high-value goalscoring positions and create chances on the regular.

His high ranking for actual Goal Contributions per 90 highlights his ability to deliver an end product, which was obvious from the introduction, when we pointed out he’s making goal contributions at a rate of one per match.

His volume end-product is not coming by chance, however, it’s earned by volume, high-quality chance creation and shot volume.

Marco Asensio is backing up his central role within Domenico Tedesco’s Fenerbahçe and repaying the manager’s trust with real goals and assists, making him a reliable final-third contributor and Sarı-Lacivertliler’s MVP in 2025/2026.

Marco Asensio’s numbers are still above-average for Opposition Penalty area touches per 90, but they do fall off from the elite numbers posted for goal contribution, xG contribution and shot-volume, while he ranks far below-average for Dribbles per 90.

These numbers are not a surprise, nor do they point to a drop-off in quality.

Rather, they point to the intricacies of Marco Asensio’s Fenerbahçe role in 2025/2026.

He isn’t a player who will take opponents on 1v1 a lot.

The touches he does make inside the opposing penalty area will likely come as a result of intelligent off-the-ball movement, leading to him occupying a high-value goalscoring position and availing of a quality goalscoring chance rather than as a result of him dribbling past opponents to break into the opponent’s box.

In possession, Asensio demonstrates a strong level of technical security and attacking influence, pointing to his central role in Fenerbahçe’s setup, not positionally, but conceptually.

Marco Asensio ranks above-average in all of our possession metrics based on his 2025/2026 performance but posts outstanding numbers for pass volume, pass accuracy, passes received and ‘Dangerous Passes per 90’.

This effectively shows how involved he is in his team’s possession phases, as the playmaker sees a whole lot of the ball, leading to the above numbers.

He plays a lot of passes, and most of them are accurate, but his high ranking for ‘Dangerous Passes per 90’ shows he’s not just sitting there circulating possession; he is looking forward, breaking lines, and attempting to create for his team at a high volume, too.

His high ranking for Received Passes per 90 also reflects strong off-the-ball movement and positioning, particularly between the lines.

Marco Asensio’s more moderate numbers for Progressive Passes per 90 (60th percentile) suggest he is not the primary driver of progression from deeper areas for his side.

The Spaniard’s creative output tends to emerge through combination play and intelligent movement or positioning to create space, rather than through direct ball progression or isolation.

Defensively, while Marco Asensio’s Defensive Duel win percentage is strong, his duel volume is much lower, indicating limited overall involvement out of possession.

His aerial metrics are negligible, reinforcing the idea that physical duelling is not central to his role.

Marco Asensio’s defensive impact is situational rather than consistent, with his overall contribution heavily weighted towards attacking/possession phases.

Marco Asensio Positioning & Movement

Again, not one who thrives off physical engagements and 1v1 duels, Marco Asensio is valuable because of his passing quality and creativity on the ball.

He’s able to use this quality thanks to highly intelligent positioning and off-the-ball movement to create space for himself.

Marco Asensio Heat Map 2025/2026

Figure 2.

On paper, Marco Asensio has been classified as an attacking midfielder, a right-winger and a central midfielder at times this term, depending on Fenerbahçe’s tactical setup.

However, he has more-or-less always been afforded a relatively free-roaming ‘10’ / advanced playmaker role regardless of starting position.

Regardless of whether he starts wider or more centrally, he will drift around a lot to find free space for himself to occupy a position from where he can receive and either create a goalscoring chance for his side or dictate play by spreading the ball around the pitch towards more space.

It’s this intelligent movement and positioning that really provides the backbone of support for his creativity to flourish.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Drop-through.mp4

Here, in the Europa League against his former loan club Aston Villa, Marco Asensio scans to fully understand his surroundings and plan his next move, before dropping deeper and wider into the right half-space where he can receive in space and then put his outstanding technique to work by lofting a through pass over the top for his teammate to get onto the end of, creating a solid goalscoring opportunity out of very little, highlighting the quality he brings to the pitch for Fenerbahçe and how his positioning and movement facilitate his creativity.

Figure 3.

Inside the final third, it’s common to find Marco Asensio dropping back into space in front of the opponents’ defensive structure, like we see in Figure 3.

marco-asensio-scout-report-fenerbahce-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 4.

Here, he can receive, open his body up and either attempt to split the defence with a through pass or, the option he ultimately takes here, switch the ball out to the opposite wing where he finds a teammate in loads of space and a dangerous position.

marco-asensio-scout-report-fenerbahce-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 5.

In Figure 5, we find Marco Asensio having held up his run and after finding space in ‘zone 14’.

Rather than bursting in behind the defensive line, Marco Asensio will always hold himself up and look to get open in front of the opposing defensive structure.

As play moves on here, he receives and quickly gets a shot off, which tests the goalkeeper.

Marco Asensio Dribbling & Chance Creation

Marco Asensio is not a volume dribbler, as mentioned, but you can’t be an elite ‘10’ at his level without quality dribbling ability.

He doesn’t utilise his dribbling at the same volume as attacking midfielders or wingers who constantly seek out 1v1 duels, but he does need to use it when under high pressure and in search of space, as well as when he receives in transition and needs to drive his team upfield.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Dribb-through.mp4

We see an example of the latter in the clip above, where Marco Asensio does well to bait his opponent into a challenge before nicking the ball away and continuing his carry upfield into the opposition’s half, where he can eventually play a defence-splitting through ball and very nearly create a strong goalscoring chance for his team on the counter.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/10-escape-carry.mp4

The next clip above shows an example of the former.

Marco Asensio finds space centrally, scans before receiving, so he’s aware of the oncoming pressure from behind, and then evades that pressure masterfully.

By attracting pressure centrally from several opponents and then escaping it, Marco Asensio creates space elsewhere on the pitch, which he and his teammates can exploit.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/10-escape-through.mp4

The last clip shows Marco Asensio receiving the ball further upfield.

He escapes pressure and protects the ball well, opening up a great through passing opportunity inside the final third, further highlighting his ability to escape pressure and create space even when it’s very tight.

Conclusion

Marco Asensio’s 2025/2026 campaign highlights the value of placing a technically elite, space-oriented playmaker at the centre of a team’s attacking structure.

Operating as a free-roaming ‘10’, he has maximised his technical and mental strengths to consistently run games for his side.

His output is not driven by volume dribbling or physical dominance, but by intelligent movement and the ability to create and exploit space.

Within Fenerbahçe’s system, he has been trusted as a focal point in possession and repaid that trust with elite creativity and end-product.

His defensive limitations are justified by the attacking value he provides for Fenerbahçe.

In the right tactical environment, high-level technical players can reassert themselves as decisive forces even after stepping away from Europe’s top leagues.
