Real Madrid Vs Juventus 20252026

Real Madrid faced Juventus for the third game of the UEFA Champions League group stage, and Los Blancos won three points to join the four leading teams of this phase with nine points each.

Real Madrid did the job and secured the win, but their performance was not that satisfying for the team’s fans and followers.

They believe Xabi Alonso’s team could have scored more goals, as Madrid did not fully exploit their attacking potential.

More importantly, Real Madrid risked conceding more than one goal due to several worrying defensive mistakes that allowed Juventus to threaten Real Madrid’s goal and get very close to scoring.

Luckily for Real Madrid, Juventus’ attacking players failed to be as crucial as needed in the finishing department, which helped Real Madrid avoid a dramatic ending to the match.

On the other hand, Juventus’ performance was much better than in recent games, as it looked much more solid in defence and did an excellent job limiting Real Madrid’s threats while creating several dangerous goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match.

In this tactical analysis of the match between Real Madrid and Juventus, the focus will be on Juventus’ performance and game plan, and on what is lacking in their attacking phase to help them achieve better results in this kind of game.

Real Madrid Vs Juventus Lineups & Formations

Xabi Alonso started the match according to the 4-4-2 formation with Thibaut Courtois as a goalkeeper, and a defence made up of Federico Valverde as a right-back, Éder Militão and Raúl Asencio as centre-backs, and Álvaro Carreras as a left-back.

The midfield looked different from the previous games.

Alonso kept both Dani Ceballos and Franco Mastantuono on the bench.

He preferred to start Aurélien Tchouaméni and Arda Güler in central midfield, with Brahim Díaz and Vinícius Júnior as wingers.

The attacking duo consisted of Jude Bellingham as a second striker and Kylian Mbappé as the central striker.

On the other hand, Igor Tudor preferred to rest a few key players and use them during the second half.

His plan was relatively successful, as players like Manuel Locatelli and Francisco Conceição were highly impactful during that second period and helped Juventus greatly during attacking transitions.

Tudor started the match in the 5-4-1 formation, with Michele Di Gregorio in goal, Federico Gatti, Daniele Rugani, and Lloyd Kelly as centre-backs, and both Pierre Kalulu and Andrea Cambiaso as wing-backs.

The midfield consisted of Teun Koopmeiners and Khéphren Thuram as central midfielders, and Weston McKennie and Kenan Yıldız as wingers.

The choice of McKennie on the right wing was made to ensure more defensive work on the side where Júnior can be extremely dangerous, rather than starting with a more attacking option such as Conceição or Edon Zhegrova.

For the striker role, Tudor preferred to start with Dušan Vlahović, then use Jonathan David and Loïs Openda instead of Vlahović and Yıldız.

Juventus’ Dangerous Counterattacking System

Juventus started the match in the best possible way at the difficult Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and threatened Real Madrid from the opening minutes.

However, they failed to build on their initial attempts and were obliged to defend with a low defensive block in order to better resist Real Madrid’s actions.

In fact, Tudor adopted a defensive, counterattacking plan for their encounter against Real Madrid; however, he did not start the match with the players who best suited that plan.

In other words, it would have been much more adapted to the plan if Tudor used players like Conceição from the start, João Mário, and, why not, Vasilije Adžić, Filip Kostić, or Zhegrova, as these players are more suitable for the counterattacking playing style and can be quick and technical enough to accelerate and penetrate from the wings.

These players could have provided more quality than Kalulu and McKennie, as both were solid defensively but unable to offer a qualitative attacking contribution, especially during those attacking transitions.

Francisco Conceição Crucial Interception

Furthermore, the argument that Kalulu should be used as a wing-back because he provides more defensive support to the three centre-backs cannot be convincing, mainly because Conceição proved in the second half that he can also be valuable in defence.

He was capable of beating Júnior in a dangerous counter-attacking duel.

He intercepted the ball from him without committing mistakes, despite being the last defender, which proves that Conceição can be reliable in the defensive phase as well and deserves to be risked in such games rather than prioritizing excessive defensive security.

Also, sometimes the team needs to take a bit of risk to succeed; otherwise, Juventus will keep playing it safe and keep getting more draws than wins.

Apart from the player-choice dilemma that Tudor is still failing to master at Juventus, the team showed much more determination and composure in dealing with the events of this match, especially thanks to the efficient counterattacks they created following Real Madrid’s interceptions.

Tudor exploited Real Madrid’s poor use of the high defensive block when attacking, pushing his players to punish Real Madrid’s defence with quick penetrations or accurate through passes towards the back of the defensive line.

However, in all these counterattacking attempts, Juventus lacked the clinical finishing or the final pass, which prevented them from equalising or even winning the game despite creating the opportunities needed to do so.

Dušan Vlahović Counterattacking Attempt

The following counterattacking action was born thanks to Vlahović’s solo effort and anticipation of Militão’s retreating attempt, exploiting the fact that all of Real Madrid’s players were inside Juventus’ half and accelerating to surpass Militão and reach the box with full speed, something that reduced his scoring chances since he arrived a bit tired in that area and was not capable of finishing in the most dangerous way.

Courtois was also ready and waiting for Vlahović’s shot, and the latter did not have many alternatives as he was also tightly marked by Militão.

That said, exploiting such occasions is necessary against teams like Real Madrid, and Juventus need to focus much more on being clinical in such situations if they plan to reach the later stages of the UEFA Champions League.

For instance, angling the shot a bit more while adding more power, or feinting to shoot and dribbling past Militão would have made things a bit easier for Vlahović.

Vlahović cannot be blamed much for this action, though, given the considerable effort he has made to reach the box and his abilities as a striker, since he is not the type of striker who is very agile or relies heavily on dribbling.

Juventus Final Passing & Chemistry Errors

Another notable issue that was somewhat recurrent throughout this match is the misunderstanding among Juventus’ attacking players in the final third, specifically regarding final passes and positioning during such plays.

Juventus could have exploited Real Madrid’s defensive fragility a bit more intelligently if they had been more used to playing alongside each other and, more importantly, to having more chemistry when it comes to passing combinations.

The fact that players like Yıldız and Vlahović do not play alongside each other often creates misunderstandings in certain situations that Juventus needs to deal with more decisively.

The following example highlights the most dangerous occasion on which both players failed to convert due to Yıldız’s mistimed pass and Vlahović’s wrong reaction.

When Vlahović moved the far post, Yıldız did not provide the pass and continued his run.

When Yıldız decided to pass, Vlahović judged that Militão would potentially intercept the pass, so he retreated to receive a backward pass, hoping that Yıldız would notice, but the latter didn’t.

These small details create the difference and could have changed the result of this match, knowing that Real Madrid were not defending well in this action, as a striker like Vlahović should not be left with no marking inside that dangerous area, with Militão trying to intercept the potential pass or cross and overlooking the movements of Vlahović behind him.

Manuel Locatelli Playmaking Efficiency & Juventus Through Passing Solution

The second-half substitutions made Juventus even more dangerous, as Conceição, Locatelli, Kostić, David, and Openda added freshness and dynamism to Juventus’ attack.

Apart from the high pressing applied to try to win the ball back inside Real Madrid’s half, Juventus’ solution was to resort to key through passes between the lines and in half-spaces, with one of the players making the forward movement to receive a pass at the back of Real Madrid’s advanced defensive line.

This was very common in the second half, and Locatelli was the player who posed the greatest threat with this type of vertical passing and crossing.

Locatelli proved that his spot as a deep-lying playmaker is untouchable at Juventus, as no other player in the squad can master this role better than him, including Koopmeiners, who was not as efficient or dangerous in the first half.

As one example from many, this action confirms once again the fact that Juventus are not using their full potential.

For instance, this attacking action could have been much more dangerous if Mário had been playing instead of Kalulu.

Mário would have guaranteed much more valuable attacking support following such penetrations.

Kalulu was good enough to spot the space at the back of Real Madrid’s defensive line, but failed to deal with the ball as needed despite receiving it in perfect conditions and having the time required for crossing or shooting.

What is more important in this action, though, is Locatelli’s quick and intelligent passing, finding the space and time to provide the through pass to Kalulu between two Real Madrid players, creating a dangerous opportunity out of nowhere.

Locatelli was capable of providing similar key passes during this match, but Juventus’ attacking players failed to convert those chances.

Gatti also had a similar through-passing attempt, exploiting Real Madrid’s high defensive block during the game’s final minutes, confirming himself as someone who can be dangerous when passing when Juventus faces teams with similar defensive strategies.

Juventus Poor Decision-Making Inside The Box

Unfortunately for Gatti and Juventus, however, both David and Openda failed to take that decisive final action as they should, missing a crucial chance worryingly despite having the time and space to score.

This action highlights the serious problem that Juventus have in concretising their created actions, as decision-making in that area has often been disappointing from Juventus’ attacking players.

In this case, David received the ball from Openda and preferred to return it to him, inviting him to shoot.

However, Openda did not look at what was in front of him before shooting and went for the first-time shot using his left foot, wasting a golden chance to pretend as if he would shoot using his left foot, put the ball to his right while avoiding the sliding tackle, and finish without disturbance using his more powerful foot.

Such decision-making errors cost Juventus the match, despite them deserving to snatch a draw if they had concretised some of these actions.

Juventus put on a powerful defensive performance, preventing Real Madrid from scoring on multiple occasions.

But unfortunately for them, those defensive efforts will not mean anything since Juventus failed to be as clinical as needed upfront.

Conclusion

Real Madrid got the victory they needed to continue leading the UEFA Champions League standings, but they need to seriously revise their defensive system and plans.

Due to their high defensive block organisation and individual mistakes, they risked conceding more than one goal during this match.

On the other hand, Juventus will need to build on the desire to win and the defensive resilience shown in this match to play the upcoming games with more ambition and resilience.

They still need to improve their decision-making inside the box and their final passing, as well as use a bit more attacking players in certain key positions, especially on the wings.
