Galatasaray Vs Liverpool [1-0] UEFA Champions League 2025/2026 Arne Slot Turnover Mistakes And Attacking Issues – Tactical Analysis

Galatasaray won their second match of the UEFA Champions League’s league phase after playing a historic match against Liverpool and beating them 1-0, a huge result for the Turkish side.

Galatasaray failed to win their first UEFA Champions League game, losing 1-5 to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Making up for that in the second home game and getting their first three points will be crucial for their qualification hopes at the end of the league phase.

It was obvious that Galatasaray’s players approached the match with passion, determination, and resilience despite Liverpool’s attempts to get back into the game.

Galatasaray focused on Liverpool’s strengths and weaknesses, knowing how to exploit them to create multiple goal-scoring opportunities, score one goal, and defend with intelligence and compactness throughout the match, which helped them secure their advantage.

On the other hand, Liverpool’s performance was disappointing.

The team looked unprepared, lacking attacking ideas and unable to play with more determination than Galatasaray’s defenders.

Arne Slot’s starting Liverpool lineup underwent numerous changes, some of which were not entirely understandable, even though he justified his choices by stating that certain players lacked pre-season preparation and should be rested for some games and monitored closely.

Although resting players is understandable, doing so in a tough away match against a team like Galatasaray, known for being difficult to beat at their stadium in the atmosphere it creates, was a mistake by Slot.

In this tactical analysis of the match between Galatasaray and Liverpool, the article will examine why Liverpool lost and why they could not get back into the game.

This analysis will assess Slot’s starting XI, positions, and formation choices, as well as tactical decisions and the team’s mistakes and weaknesses, to explore the reasons for Liverpool’s disappointing result and performance.

Galatasaray Vs Liverpool Formations & Arne Slot Lineup Errors

Galatasaray succeeded in securing their first clean sheet in their last 24 matches in all European competitions, and for the first time since their narrow win in a UEFA Champions League qualifying win against Olimpija Ljubljana back in 2023.

Okan Buruk’s choices and strict defensive organisation throughout the game helped Galatasaray secure a narrow win.

The team’s overall defensive efforts, close and compact lines, and consideration of Liverpool’s attacking weapons helped secure the win.

In fact, Galatasaray was capable of limiting Liverpool’s most dangerous players, and that was crucial for them to keep a clean sheet despite Liverpool’s upgrades during the second half with their substitutions.

Buruk and Galatasaray were capable of stopping the players who participated in the second half as well.

They obliged Liverpool to rely solely on crosses, preventing penetration from the middle and denying their wingers the chance to cut inside successfully.

In addition to Liverpool’s lack of attacking ideas, Galatasaray’s excellent and disciplined tight marking of the individual attacking players of Liverpool, as well as their collective defensive positioning to fill the potentially dangerous spaces, was crucial for them to win this match.

The reliance on compact, very attentive, and physical defensive lines can greatly benefit Galatasaray going forward, as such defensive performances can make scoring very complicated for their opponents, especially at RAMS Park.

Furthermore, with a striker like Victor Osimhen and talented wingers like Yunus Akgün and Barış Yılmaz, supported by İlkay Gündoğan, Galatasaray’s counterattacks were destined to be very dangerous, as Osimhen is known for his speed, physical strength, and finishing.

The support of both wingers and of Gündoğan guaranteed more ways to reach the box and more passes to Osimhen, who was capable of tiring Liverpool’s defensive line.

With Mauro Icardi and Leroy Sané as the attacking options on the bench, Galatasaray promises a high chance of qualifying from the league phase and threatening any opponent, especially following such a win, which will boost their morale and confidence.

Buruk relied on a 4-2-3-1 formation with Uğurcan Çakır as a goalkeeper, Wilfried Singo as a right-back, Davinson Sánchez and Abdülkerim Bardakcı as centre-backs, and Ismail Jakobs as a left-back.

The midfield consisted of two central midfielders: Lucas Torreira and Mario Lemina. Gündoğan played as an advanced playmaker, and both Akgün and Yılmaz were the team’s wingers behind the main striker, Osimhen.

On the other hand, Slot made several changes within his team’s starting XI, including the three lines, while also employing a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Slot relied on Alisson Becker as a goalkeeper and a defensive line composed of Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk as centre-backs, Dominik Szoboszlai as a right-back, and Milos Kerkez as a left-back.

Taking risks on the flank, where Szoboszlai is not entirely natural and where a dangerous winger like Yılmaz is known to be dangerous enough to disturb and potentially surpass any defender, was not a great decision from Slot.

If Slot had kept Szoboszlai as a midfielder during the game and opted for a more defensive option, such as Joe Gomez, to stop Yılmaz, things could have gone better for Liverpool.

Gomez guarantees more balance to his team’s defence compared to Szoboszlai.

Slot could also have opted for Conor Bradley in that position and substituted him during the second half after securing a good result in the first half, in case Bradley needed some rest, as the head coach stated.

Another idea that could have been more useful for Slot and Liverpool in this match was to rely on the natural right-back, Jeremie Frimpong, in that position.

Szoboszlai would be used as an advanced playmaker, his best position, and Florian Wirtz would be deployed on the right wing, for instance.

Slot could have made his team much more balanced and powerful by resting players who needed it, but many of his lineup choices were unsuccessful.

Overall, Slot could have managed his squad better and started with a more dangerous lineup to try to secure the three points, but since he favored rotation, Liverpool lost the game.

Liverpool’s midfield consisted of Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones instead of the usual starter, Alexis Mac Allister.

This also impacted the midfield balance, given Jones’s inferior defensive abilities compared to Mac Allister.

In the attack, Slot used Cody Gakpo as a left winger, Frimpong as a right winger instead of Mohamed Salah, Wirtz as an advanced playmaker, and Hugo Ekitike as a striker, rather than Alexander Isak.

Galatasaray Vs Liverpool Lineups

Liverpool Tactical Errors & Attacking Issues

Liverpool’s starting lineup lacked chemistry and complementarity, and that was obvious on the pitch, especially during the first half when the Reds were immediately unable to keep up with Galatasaray’s quick counterattacking actions.

This was recurrent during the game, and Galatasaray could have exploited Liverpool’s defensive issues even better as they missed a minimum of two or three goal-scoring actions.

Moreover, starting the match with a high defensive line required a compact, disciplined defence to guarantee quick, synchronised movements.

Dominik Szoboszlai Positioning & Pace Issues

However, Liverpool failed from that perspective, with Szoboszlai being unable to keep up with Yılmaz’s penetrations on numerous occasions.

This picture highlights Szoboszlai’s late defensive reactions and his inability to catch Yılmaz or keep up with his pace after the latter exploited this positioning error in his favour.

Thanks to his quick acceleration, he was able to penetrate inside the box and reach Alisson, but luckily for Liverpool, he did not finish the action well.

Dominik Szoboszlai Positioning And Pace Issues
Soon after this action, Szoboszlai was obliged to commit a foul inside the penalty box against Yılmaz, who was intelligent enough to push him to do so.

He relied on his speed and exploited his opponent’s slower acceleration, lack of experience, and defensive talent.

Liverpool Defensive Line Positioning & Marking

After conceding Galatasaray’s goal, Liverpool looked even more disorganised from a defensive perspective.

They continued playing with a high defensive line and were unable to mark dangerous opponents as they should, letting players like Osimhen find spaces at the back of their defensive line.

The latter could have scored the second goal if he was more decisive with his shooting, especially on the following occasion when he received an intelligent through pass that broke Liverpool’s high defensive line.

Liverpool should work on improving their handling of such situations.

All the defensive players in this picture overlooked Osimhen and Akgün and failed to position themselves well to mark them.

Liverpool Passing Issues & Lack Of Defensive Concentration

Liverpool also risked conceding a second goal during the second half when Konaté made a passing error, providing a slow pass to Gravenberch, who was not attentive enough to reach it before Osimhen.

That led to conceding a very dangerous opportunity to Osimhen, and Liverpool were fortunate that the Nigerian did not capitalize on it well.

However, Liverpool will need to deal better with such situations, especially when they are behind in the score, since such errors might lead to conceding more goals.

Liverpool Final Pass Issues

Offensively, Liverpool created numerous dangerous chances but struggled primarily with their final passes and finishing.

During the first half, Liverpool had the opportunity to score thanks to Gakpo’s passing, but Ekitike’s finishing was poor despite being in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.

Even more disappointing was that Wirtz failed to provide an accurate pass after receiving a second ball.

Despite having time to serve a teammate, he preferred a complicated back-heel pass to the opponent.

Liverpool Final Passing & Finishing Problems

Liverpool created another dangerous action during the second half, but the main problem remains their inability to provide the final pass when needed and their failure to finish accurately.

In this action, Ekitike receives an excellent pass from Frimpong but decides to go for a back-heel finish instead of serving Wirtz, who was waiting for a pass that would have invited him to shoot with power and therefore have more chances of scoring.

These final pass and finishing issues were also related to Slot’s turnover.

Although he had better options for the striker and playmaker roles, he preferred to continue playing with plan B options in both positions.

Liverpool Final Passing And Finishing Problems
Since Slot made the changes so late, the team was unable to create the necessary danger against Galatasaray, even after making the substitutions.

Galatasaray remained compact, forcing Liverpool to continue relying on crossing only when Salah and Isak were subbed in.

This also confirms Liverpool’s lack of alternative attacking solutions.

Conclusion

Galatasaray achieved a historic win over Liverpool thanks to their resilience and conversion of the chances they created, even though they could have scored even more goals in this match.

On the other hand, Slot and Liverpool will need to adjust their defensive and attacking plans, especially in terms of marking, defensive passing, final passing, and finishing, to avoid repeating the same scenario against their next opponents.

Using a more powerful starting lineup while managing turnover more intelligently will also help Slot rest his players without necessarily losing points, as he did this time.
