Juan Carlos Carcedo Tactics At Pafos FC 20252026

Formed just over a decade ago from a merger of two modest local sides, Cypriot club Pafos were never expected to trouble Europe’s elite.

What began as a quiet project to consolidate senior football in the touristic Paphos district, harmlessly floating between the top two divisions, quickly became one of the continent’s most surprising ascents.

The 2017 takeover from Total Sports Investments, which allowed them to upgrade coaching, facilities, and recruitment, was seen as pivotal.

Over the next six years, the club stabilised itself as a solid mid-table outfit with little fear of relegation or any real chance of qualifying for the European competitions.

The appointment of Spaniard Juan Carlos Carcedo, in the summer of 2023, altered those fortunes rather dramatically.

With both a Cypriot Cup and First Division title already to his name, Carcedo has written himself into Pafos legend.

This season, the club have pushed the boundaries once more as they remain unbeaten in their seven UEFA Champions League fixtures, across qualifying and the League Phase, thus far.

In this tactical analysis, we aim to examine the defining features of Carcedo’s playing model.

Quick Pafos Transitions

To begin this Pafos analysis, it’s essential to note that lightning-quick transitions and counterattacks have been a staple of the team’s play in recent seasons.

This has especially been the case in European fixtures, where Pafos are ultimately underdogs, but it’s not limited to those games either.

With aggressive pressing triggers to force turnovers high up the pitch, quick vertical play through wide forwards like Jajá and Anderson Silva, and a strong ball-winner in midfield in Ivan Sunjic, Pafos have all the necessary tools to be deadly on the break.

Carcedo’s set-piece structure is aggressive: multiple attackers are stationed high, ready to counterpress and recover as soon as the ball is cleared from the box.

Even after being reduced to 10 men at Olympiacos, Pafos had three men deployed well outside the penalty area on an opposition corner.

The gamble pays off as Jajá pounces on a loose ball in midfield from the resulting clearance.

Just like that, an incredibly promising 3-v-2 scenario is created.

As we can see, the wide-forwards immediately look to pull wide in transition, forcing full-backs to track laterally and also opening up the central lane for Jajá to continue carrying the ball.

The wide men often delay their diagonal runs, starting wide to stretch the line and arriving into the box just as the final ball is delivered, exploiting defenders as they’re still shifting across.

Pafos In-Possession Tactics: Combination Play & Overloads

Moving on to Cardedo and Pafos’ in-possession approach, as the top force in their domestic league, Pafos inevitably tend to face sides that sit very deep to try and contain their attacking threat.

In this instance, Omonia Aradippou‘s back five are essentially sat on the six-yard box inside the first 90 seconds of the match, with five Pafos men already inside the penalty area ready to attack the cross.

This means that those rapid transitions with mammoth amounts of space in behind are, typically, very much off limits.

This hasn’t proven to be a problem for Carcedo and Pafos; in fact, they’ve thrived under those conditions.

Last season, Pafos recorded their highest-ever league goal tally with 67, and added another 26 in the UEFA Conference League.

Pafos create a lot of threat through wide overloads, specifically those on the right-hand side of the pitch.

Carcedo’s side breaks down their opposition by exhibiting quick combination play, one-twos, and give-and-gos to get past a settled defence commonplace in the Cypriot side’s attacking tactics.

In combination with their players’ technical quality and intricate ball movements, the rapid, dynamic movement in their forward line is pivotal to Pafos’ final third tactics under Juan Carlos Carcedo.

Pafos Tactics: Aggressive High-Press

The foundations of Pafos’s UEFA Champions League success to date have been built on defensive solidity.

They conceded just three goals from their first seven continental fixtures.

In every one of these matches, Carcedo’s men have had less possession than their opponents.

One of the main principles of Carcedo’s system is a highly aggressive high press, with the two frontmen in their 4-4-2 out-of-possession shape tasked with disrupting the first phase of the opposition’s build-up.

Whilst Pafos’ midfield four and back line settle into a rigid mid-block out of possession, the central strikers push relentlessly high, ready to pounce from the very first moment the ball is in play.

The passage begins with Captain Maumer Tankovic pressing the goalkeeper with suffocating urgency.

Vlad Dragomir then hounds the Dynamo centre-back, giving him no time to settle. He ultimately forces him into traffic, where a rushed pass gifts away possession.

For the system to function as effectively as this instance, it demands two highly committed, athletic players off the ball: willing to cover ground, press with intensity, and make sacrifices for the team.

Just a minute and a half later, an almost identical situation occurs on Kyiv’s very next goal kick.

Once again, the goalkeeper triggers the aggressive press; this time, Tankovic nearly dispossesses the central defender and forces a low-percentage floated clearance.

Whether the two aforementioned names, Anderson Silva, Landry Dimata, or Mons Bassouamina, fulfill these two roles, Pafos has a multitude of ultra-determined and unselfish forwards willing to dismantle the first phase of the opposition’s build-up.

The premise is simple.

At best, you win a high recovery on the edge of the opponent’s box and immediately create a 2v2 at goal.

At worst, you force a rushed clearance and reclaim possession from the resulting long ball.

Pafos Flexible Out-Of-Possession Shape

Out of possession, Carcedo’s bread and butter is his number ten, joining the striker off the ball to form an intense 4-4-2.

However, the former Real Zaragoza and UD Ibiza manager is admirably flexible, possessing the ability to adjust the team’s shape based on both the opposition’s setup and the game state.

For example, away at Olympiacos, Pafos opted for a slightly more rigid 4-1-4-1 formation and held on for a respectable 0-0 draw with just 31% possession.

Though being on the wrong side of the possession stats is far from an alien concept to Carcedo, averaging 46% in the qualifying rounds, being on the back foot to such a large extent was not by design.

Pafos remained committed to their brave counterpressing until, as alluded to, after 27 minutes in Greece, their right-back, Bruno Felipe, was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Shortly after, Carcedo made two changes, switching to a 4-4-1, as the Cypriot minnows had to show a different side of their game.

Pafos’ 4-4-1 shape with 10 men.

Pafos resorted to traditional box defending, dropping into a low block when under sustained pressure.

Despite the hosts’ man advantage and possession domination, Pafos limited them to just two big chances and three shots on target.

The summer arrival of David Luiz on an extortionate, relative to Cypriot First Division wages, £ 30,000-per-week contract, highlights Carcedo’s desire to be a more solid outfit this season.

That said, Pafos only conceded a meagre 21 league goals last year: the best defensive performance in Cyprus since the 2020/2021 season.

Conclusion

Juan Carlos Carcedo’s task of navigating the second-lowest-ranked side in the Champions League into the Playoff round seems like an uphill task.

However, it’s one that he will truly relish, and his side is already off to a promising start.

After all, it’s not just on the continental stage where Pafos have fought to shrug off their ‘minnows’ tag.

Even domestically, Pafos have been playfully nicknamed ‘the kittens’ due to the club’s relatively young history (founded in 2014) and outsider status compared to the traditional big clubs in Cyprus.

Once the kittens of Cypriot football, Carcedo has played a pivotal role in transforming them into the country’s lions.

Pafos will feel that they have a realistic chance of retaining their league title this season.

If they succeed, they would become the first side to win back-to-back championships in Cyprus since APOEL (2017–2019).

The ever-evolving stories of both Juan Carlos Carcedo and Pafos FC are certainly ones to track in the upcoming years.
