Crystal Palace had arguably the club’s most successful ever season in 2024/2025.
An 12th-place league finish was accompanied by a historic FA Cup victory over Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City.
As a result, the London side has reimagined their ambitions, and this summer’s transfer window could be crucial in solidifying Palace’s future as a strong competitor in England’s top flight.
The transfer window’s first acquisition looks to be the Ivorian centre-half Ousmane Diomande.
The 21-year-old is now heavily linked to a move in the coming weeks.
The youngster currently plies his trade at Sporting CP and is extremely highly rated in Portuguese football circles.
This article will conduct a player analysis on Diomande, analysing his strengths and weaknesses and considering how he may fit into the Eagles team next season.
Who Is Ousmane Diomande?
Ousmane Diomande is a 6’3″ centre-back with a very unique profile.
Despite being just 21, Diomande has an impressive CV and is not short of career success.
He has already made 101 appearances for Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, many of them in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
In addition, he has nine caps for his country and has already won Liga Portugal twice, the Danish first Division, and the Africa Cup of Nations.
Now, he looks set to join the South London club Crystal Palace for a fee of around £40m.
Sporting Lisbon & Crystal Palace Tactical Similarities
Oliver Glasner took over the Eagles in the 2023/2024 season and has been very consistent with his tactical approach since.
Glasner adopts a 3-4-2-1 system, with wing-backs that drop in to form a back five when defending deep.
The images below show Glasner‘s set-up in their recent FA Cup triumph.
Below, Sporting Lisbon‘s set up when defending deep is shown.
Both sides sit with five at the back with two central midfielders in front.
Crystal Palace Style Of Play
Glasner’s side is very counterattacking and does not subscribe to the current standard in football, which is that possession is essential for domination.
Instead, Palace are happy to cede possession and focus on being effective when on the ball through creating impactful transitions.
For reference, Crystal Palace averaged 42.6% possession in the 2024/2025 Premier League and made just 291 accurate passes per game.
Both of these statistics ranked the side 17th in the league.
In the Portuguese League, Sporting are the dominant side, and so they tend to have a lot of possession.
However, in the Champions League, Leões have adopted similar tactics to those of current Crystal Palace.
Much like Palace, when against better-quality sides, Sporting are happy to concede possession.
They averaged just 48% possession in the UCL this season and 45% when they had last previously played in the competition.
The tactical similarities between the two sides and stylistic comparisons should help Diomande should find the transition to English football easier.
He should have a better understanding of the movements and shapes expected of him and his teammates, which should allow him to come straight into the starting line-up should the transfer be completed.
Ousmane Diomande Style Of Play
As shown in the visual above, Diomandes has several notable strengths compared to similar profiles in Europe.
His duel statistics are recognisably above average, with his aerial ability in particular being outstanding.
Additionally, it’s clear to see his talents in possession.
Diomande has tremendous passing accuracy while still making a high number of dangerous passes, which contribute to attacks and build up stages of play.
We will discuss all of these strengths and weaknesses in more detail below, considering how they may impact his potential time in the Premier League.
Ousmane Diomande Physicality
First and foremost, it is imperative to mention Diomande’s physical attributes.
As mentioned, Diomande stands at 6’3.
With this height often comes other challenges, but this is avoided with the Ivorian.
Diomande is extremely and expectedly strong, but he combines this with great speed and athleticism—something rarely found in central defenders.
His incredible speed includes the ability to cover distances.
Still, he is also extremely agile and can respond well to sudden changes in play with rapid directional shifts and quick bursts.
The clip below perfectly represents this.
Here, Diomande is capable of outpacing the opposition before using his strength and agility to win the ball.
He then uses his speed and burst to race away and begin a new phase of build-up play.

These physical gifts also enable him to act very aggressively in his defensive play.
He is proactive in duels, often looking to push out of shape to intercept.
This year alone, Diomande made a hugely impressive 141 recoveries.
Furthermore, his athleticism and strength make him a test for anyone in the air, and he thrives in these kinds of duels.
These physical strengths will be essential in his transition into the Premier League.
Being able to stand your ground is key in winning battles against the likes of Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak, and very few defenders will back themselves as much as Diomande in this regard.
Ousmane Diomande Technicality
Secondly, Diomande is a good technical defender.
He is comfortable carrying the ball into the midfield and has a varied passing range, which allows him to contribute heavily to building up play.
Although it may not be a skill he is often required to use, the video below demonstrates his technical capabilities.
He has delicate control of the ball and can manoeuvre it very effectively to retain it under close pressure from the opposition.
With Palace playing deep, away teams will often look to close him down, so this skill set could be vital for his success.

Not only is he a great ball-manipulator, but he is also an adept passer.
Last season, he achieved a passing accuracy of 93.5% and a long passing accuracy of 60.9%, ranking him highly among his competition.
Ousmane Diomande would be arriving with the expectations of most likely replacing the rumoured departure of Marc Guehi.
This role would come with the expectation of build up contributions.
Last season, Guehi averaged 111 touches per game and had a Premier League passing accuracy of 96%.
As a result, he was key to Palace’s play.
At just 21, Diomande still feels like he has a lot of growing to do before reaching his potential, but his natural talents on the ball make him a perfect fit to take Guehi’s mantle.
Ousmande Diomande Weaknesses
As with any other 21-year-old signing, his arrival involves elements of uncertainty and risk.
With Diomande, the main question marks surround his decision-making and concentration.
Diomande can sometimes be rash in high-pressure situations, which can cost his teams at crucial times.
This can relate to both in and out of possession.
When pressed, Diomande can sometimes look to force passes, which results in interceptions by the opposition in dangerous zones, resulting in unnecessary pressure.
More importantly, off the ball, he can at times show elements of focusing too much on the ball location.
He can press overaggressively in an attempt to regain possession, but this then leaves open gaps to be exploited.
Below is an example of being overly committed, which leads to an opportunity being created against his side.

Similarly, he can sometimes focus on the play and lose his marker, allowing strikers to move into dangerous positions, as shown below.

Diomande Experience In Big Games
Another potential concern for Eagles fans is how Diomande may react to the high-pressure exposure that comes with playing in the Premier League.
While his success against top clubs is undeniable, he has also had poor moments in these big games.
Diomande has given penalties away in the UCL against both Manchester City and Arsenal, and had a very poor game in a 5-1 home loss to the Gunners last season.
Whilst this may sound worrying to Palace fans, these concerns should not outweigh the exciting aspects of his game.
The defender has huge potential, and most of his current faults are due to a lack of experience.
The Portuguese League is a quality division, but it does not match up to the Premier League.
Being tested to the maximum weekly by the world’s top talents will only improve Diomande and could bring out a level of concentration and dedication he has not experienced before.
Conclusion
Crystal Palace would be recruiting an extremely talented player in Ousmane Diomande.
The centre-half has all the attributes to develop into a world-class talent.
He is athletic and strong and has the potential to become extremely effective in possession.
He is also very well-suited to the Palace playing philosophy and has experience in the system, which should make the transition relatively smooth.
Nevertheless, his flaws remain a concern for the time being.
He can be rash, unfocused, and has lapses of concentration that hurt his team in the UCL last season.
These issues require coaching, and for this reason, Oliver Glasner seems the perfect person to take the next step in his career.
In recent times, he has worked his magic on Chris Richards and Maxime Lacroix, and the tools at Diomande’s disposal are at least as good, if not better, than these mentioned.
Because of this, this move really does feel like the correct one for all parties.
In the next few years, it would be no surprise at all to see Diomande demanding a much bigger fee from the world’s biggest clubs.
