Galatasaray Vs Juventus [5–2] – Champions League 2025/2026: Galatasaray Intense High Pressing Vs Juventus New Attacking Variations – Tactical Analysis

Galatasaray hosted Juventus at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-offs, and they secured a favourable advantage with a 5-2 win.

The win does not reflect what happened in the game fairly, as Juventus had the advantage until the 49th minute, when Galatasaray equalised and added three more goals, making things complicated for their opponent.

Galatasaray will need to confirm their win next week when they travel to Italy to face Juventus once again, hoping to qualify for the knockout phase by securing that result or even adding more goals at the Allianz Stadium.

On the other hand, Juventus failed to maintain their solid first-half performance due to several defensive errors, especially after the red card.

That said, Juventus should have avoided conceding some of the goals, as those mistakes are unacceptable at this level.

Fixing those defensive errors will be crucial for Juventus to perform better and get better results going forward.

In this tactical analysis, we focus on Galatasaray’s reliance on high pressing and on exploiting Juventus’ mistakes, while exploring the Bianconeri’s experimentation with new attacking variations and their impact on their performance.

Galatasaray Vs Juventus Lineups & Formations

Okan Buruk relied on a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Uğurcan Çakır as the goalkeeper, Roland Sallai as the right-back, Davinson Sánchez and Abdülkerim Bardakcı as centre-backs, and Ismail Jakobs as the left-back.

The midfield consisted of two central midfielders: Lucas Torreira and Gabriel Sara. Yunus Akgün played as an advanced playmaker, and both Barış Yılmaz and Noa Lang were the team’s wingers behind the main striker, Victor Osimhen.

On the other side, Luciano Spalletti started the match in a 4-3-3 formation, with Michele Di Gregorio as the goalkeeper and Lloyd Kelly and Bremer as centre-backs.

Both Pierre Kalulu and Andrea Cambiaso were the full-backs, with Manuel Locatelli as the defensive midfielder, and Khéphren Thuram and Teun Koopmeiners as central midfielders, although Koopmeiners was used differently during the match, as explained below.

Up front, Juventus used Weston McKennie out of position as the main striker, Kenan Yıldız as a left winger, and Francisco Conceição as a right winger.

Galatasaray High Pressing & Juventus New Attacking Variations

Galatasaray started the match with the necessary intensity to disrupt Juventus and make a positive impact from the start, winning the duels and forcing Juventus to commit fouls in their own half.

They were quick enough in dribbling and passing, disrupting Juventus’ marking system, as Galatasaray came close to scoring in the first few minutes with a very dangerous curved shot from Akgün.

Juventus tried to resist Galatasaray’s intense pressure and dynamic ball possession by defending with a relatively high defensive block and being aggressive on the ball, while ensuring tight marking all over the pitch to prevent dangerous passes.

At the same time, they planned to launch counterattacks whenever possible and use both wingers to create numerical superiority through dribbling.

Both Yıldız and Conceição were impactful on the wings and could have been even more dangerous in the early minutes, as Conceição made the difference on the right wing thanks to his agile penetration, and the same applies to Yıldız.

Juventus Presence Inside The Box

The problem was that there was no heavy presence inside the box, given the absence of the team’s main striker and the use of McKennie as a false nine.

This picture shows McKennie’s movement without the ball, as he tries to provide a passing option to Conceição by getting close to him.

Although providing passing options and moving without the ball to avoid marking is always beneficial, McKennie’s movement away from the box in this action made Juventus lose a goalscoring possibility as he made Galatasaray’s defenders’ mission easier in terms of man-marking during this cross.

The joining of Koopmeiners and Cambiaso, as well as Yıldız, who was unmarked at the far post, could have been supported by McKennie inside the penalty area, which would have freed up one of the players and allowed Conceição to opt for a more obvious crossing option.

At the same time, it is important to note that Conceição could have opted for a cross to Yıldız, as the latter was unmarked and had the time and space to deal with the situation effectively.

Galatasaray Intense High Pressing

Although they have conceded a few chances to Juventus, Galatasaray tried to keep the ball in Juventus’ half and made their build-up complicated, forcing their players to commit errors in that zone.

Relying on the attacking line’s excellent movement without the ball to follow the ball carrier and prevent Juventus’ players from finding passing lanes soon paid off, as Osimhen was extremely attentive to Juventus’ players’ slightest mistakes.

Spotting a Yıldız’s slightly average control of the ball during a throw-in was a very intelligent move from Osimhen, who reacted quickly to that action and was able to intercept the ball thanks to his quick reflexes and physical abilities.

This was crucial in allowing Galatasaray to create space in front of Juventus’ goal, which allowed Sara to score from distance after winning a second ball following Lang’s poor handling of the situation.

It is important to note that Galatasaray’s fourth goal was scored in the exact same manner, confirming that the team’s high pressing abilities can be very dangerous for any team.

What facilitated Osimhen and his tteammates’pressing was the underestimation of this high level of pressing on certain occasions.

Juventus players knew that players like Osimhen were waiting for the slightest mistake inside the penalty area.

Still, they opted for complicated backward passes in risky areas and attempted body feints in situations that required either first-time long passes or at least safe through passes to the wings.

Juventus Use Of Teun Koopmeiners Inside The Box

It counts for Juventus that their reaction did not last long as they were able to equalise one minute after conceding that first goal, thanks to Cambiaso’s excellent advancing on the left flank and accurate cross towards Kalulu, who penetrated towards the box and created a goalscoring possibility for Koopmeiners after Kalulu’s header was saved by the goalkeeper but given away in front of Koopmeiners.

This goal confirmed that Juventus did not rely on McKennie for headers or winning duels inside the box.

Instead, Spalletti instructed Koopmeiners to enter the penalty area whenever possible and act like a striker, while being supported by a midfielder or defender on each occasion.

Koopmeiners’ availability in the penalty area during potential crosses, along with most of Juventus’ actions, made this goal possible and disrupted Galatasaray’s defensive organisation, as they had to follow McKennie outside the penalty area while also marking Koopmeiners, who mostly stayed inside the penalty area.

Juventus Teun Koopmeiners As A Second Striker

Although Juventus started the match with Koopmeiners as a midfielder and McKennie as a striker, Koopmeiners ended up playing as a second striker in the non-possession phase and as a main striker when Juventus were in possession.

This disrupted Galatasaray’s defensive organisation, as McKennie did not retreat to cover for Koopmeiners but remained as a striker as well, yet moved a lot without the ball.

Koopmeiners, however, ensured a relatively heavy presence (as mentioned above in the article) thanks to his well-timed movements, which provided passing options, won second balls, and attacked the spaces behind Galatasaray’s defensive line like a proper striker.

The second goal action further highlights Koopmeiners’ impact in the game and his ability to make a difference by playing a one-two combination with McKennie and immediately attacking the space left at the back of the defensive line, creating a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.

The understanding and chemistry between McKennie and Koopmeiners made the difference in this action, accelerating it and confusing Galatasaray’s defenders.

More importantly, the switch of roles between the two players (McKennie becoming the assist-maker and Koopmeiners becoming the goalscoring striker) was very intelligent and rewarding in the first half.

Moreover, being extremely cold-blooded in front of goal and finishing with a very difficult shot to save and execute further confirmed Koopmeiners’ ability to be very dangerous inside the box, reminding us how much of a goalscoring threat he is.

Juventus Teun Koopmeiners As An Undeclared Striker
Galatasaray went through a difficult period after Juventus’ second goal, but bounced back to equalise by exploiting Juventus’ defensive marking errors.

In particular, Juan Cabal made the wrong move, attempting to double-mark the ball holder while leaving his direct opponent, Yılmaz, unmarked.

This allowed Yılmaz to shoot without marking or attempting to disturb or deviate.

What followed was a very well-executed free-kick from Galatasaray, which allowed them to score a third goal by exploiting the confusion inside the box and taking advantage of a deflection.

In the second half, Juventus failed to create dangerous opportunities as they retreated much more and were unable to win duels in wide areas or in the middle, as they did in the first half, which heavily affected their performance and, ultimately, the result.

It is also true that the red card to Cabal affected Juventus’ plans heavily in the second half, but that does not make them victims of that red card alone, as their defensive mistakes occurred before the red card was shown as well.

Conclusion

Juventus will need to play a completely different game in the second leg to secure qualification, as this heavy loss has made their mission more complicated.

They will have to exploit the fact that they will be playing at their stadium and in front of their fans to try to score three goals without conceding, and eventually turn the tables on Galatasaray.

But to succeed in that, they will need to play a perfect game, without defensive mistakes, with extreme concentration and determination in attack.
