Club Brugge Vs Barcelona 20252026 - Tactical Analysis

The most exciting contest in Gameweek 4 of the UEFA Champions League saw Club Brugge and Barcelona play out a thrilling 3-3 draw, with numerous chances at both ends of the pitch.

The draw leaves some question marks for Hansi Flick’s side, who have now won only three of their last seven matches and sit outside the top eight of the Champions League table.

Included in those seven matches was an El Clásico loss to Real Madrid and a shocking 4-1 loss to Sevilla.

Nicky Hayen’s team have pulled off some historic upsets in the past, like a 4-1 statement win over AS Monaco earlier in this Champions League campaign.

However, they were coming off a 2-1 loss to Atalanta and a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in their previous Champions League matches.

Barcelona dominated possession, but their high line allowed Brugge numerous high-quality chances.

As a result, Barcelona had to overcome a deficit three different times to level the match.

In this tactical analysis, we will look into how Barcelona’s tactics in the final third were able to exploit Club Brugge’s low block and how Club Brugge exposed Barcelona’s high line to score three goals.

Club Brugge Vs Barcelona Lineups & Formations

Club Brugge came out in their favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.

Nordin Jackers started in net behind Joel Ordóñez and Brandon Mechele as the centre-back pairing.

Joaquin Seys started at left-back, while Kyriani Sabbe occupied his usual spot at right-back.

Raphael Onyedika and Aleksandar Stanković started together as the two central midfielders.

Hans Vanaken started as the ‘10’ while Christos Tzolis operated as the left winger alongside Carlos Forbs at right wing.

Nicolo Tresoldi occupied his usual spot up top as the striker.

Nicky Hayen made four substitutions in the match.

In the 78th minute, Mamadou Diakhon replaced Carlos Forbs, and Romeo Vermant replaced Nicolo Tresoldi.

In the 84th minute, Lynnt Audoor replaced Raphael Onyedika.

The final substitution came in the 87th minute when Hugo Vetlesen replaced an injured Lynnt Audoor.

Hansi Flick also lined his Barcelona side up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation.

Wojciech Szczęsny started in goal for the eighth straight match for Barcelona behind Ronald Araújo and Eric García as the centre-back pairing.

Alejandro Balde started at left-back, while Jules Koundé started at right-back.

Frenkie de Jong started alongside Marc Casado as the central midfield pairing.

Fermin López started in his usual spot as the number ‘10’ with Lamine Yamal on the right wing and Marcus Rashford at left wing.

Ferrán Torres started as the striker for the third straight match.

Hansi Flick made five substitutions in the match.

In the 58th minute, Robert Lewandowski came on for Ferrán Torres, and Dani Olmo came on for Marc Casado.

In the 83rd minute, Roony Bardghji came on for Marcus Rashford.

The final substitutions came in the 93rd minute when Gerard Martín came on for Alejandro Balde, and Pau Cubarsí came on for Eric García.

Barcelona Final Third Tactics

A majority of the match was spent in Brugge’s final third.

Barcelona finished the match holding 75% possession and had an 83.5% field tilt.

That is mainly because Brugge were not pressuring the ball and instead sat back in a 4-2-3-1 mid block when Barcelona were building out from the back.

Club Brugge 4 2 3 1

Barcelona were really trying to hurt Brugge down the left side of the pitch for most of the first half.

Rashford was continually pinning the right back Kyriani Sabbe inside, which allowed Balde to have space to push forward down the left-hand side.

Balde Space

Here, Rashford is able to drop in, receive the ball, and Sabbe doesn’t follow him because he’s concerned Balde will beat him in behind.

Rashford Balde

Rashford can turn and drive the ball right at Brugge’s backline, play it out to Balde, who played it back to him for a shot inside the box.

Rashford Pass to Balde

Balde Pass to Rashford

You can see here they created a 4 v 3 overload and were picking on Carlos Forbs.

Pass to Balde 1

Forbs got caught ball-watching way too many times early on.

This time, it allowed Balde to have a free run because once again, Rashford had Sabbe pinned inside, so there was plenty of space down the flank.

The change Brugge made was to have Sabbe mark Balde and Ordóñez mark Rashford when he went into the half-space.

Pass to Garcia

What that did was create a lot of space in behind.

Here, Balde recognises the space that is available, plays it back to Garcia, who is able to play a ball over the top to Rashford, who beats him 1-v-1 and sends in a cross.

Typically, Barcelona like to utilise Lamine Yamal by overloading the middle of the pitch to try and isolate him on the right wing.

It makes sense, since he’s the best 1-v-1 dribbler in the world, but in this match specifically, he started to move more into the middle of the pitch.

You can see from his heat map overall for the season that he primarily hugs the touchline.

As the match progressed, he began to move more centrally and ultimately spent most of the match in the right half-space.

For the first goal he scored, he started in a central position.

Yamal Central

Because he’s incredible, he dribbled past everyone and put it in the back of the net.

Yamal Goal

The overload to isolate worked on Barcelona’s third goal.

Koundé was able to pin a defender in the right half-space, which allowed Yamal to go 1-v-1 against Joaquin Seys.

Pass to Yamal

It ends up being an own goal, but Vanaken is slow to come close to Yamal, which allows him to get a shot off with his favoured left foot.

Barca High Line Issues

Hansi Flick’s high line did them in once again.

Last season, it was so effective at drawing opponents offside, but this season, they’ve been getting exposed more often than not.

Barcelona are actually drawing opponents offside 4.91 times per 90 minutes this season, which is more than their average of 4.67 last year.

However, their expected goals allowed per 90 minutes this season is up to 1.41 compared to 1.20 last season.

Club Brugge exposed the exact reason why their defence has taken a step back: a lack of ball pressure.

The first goal came when Brugge were able to play the ball out wide to Sabbe with no pressure from Balde.

He’s able to play Forbs easily in behind the high line, and he was able to cross it to Tresoldi to open the scoring.

Forbes Pass central

The second goal came from Brugge’s counterattack after a corner.

A lack of ball pressure allowed Vanaken to chest the ball, turn, and play a pass into Forbs, which immediately turned into a 2-on-1 fast break.

Forbs Goal

The third goal arose because Brugge were trying to overload one side of the pitch, playing centrally to Vanaken, who had time to pick out Forbs in behind.

Pass to Forbes 3

In the end, Club Brugge took only 10 shots for the match, but created 2.2 expected goals from those 10 shots, eight of which came from inside the penalty area.

Even though Club Brugge held 25% of the ball, they still managed to secure 23 touches in the penalty area.

The biggest problem with Barcelona’s high line is not the high line itself; it’s the lack of ball pressure, which is allowing opponents time and space to play balls in behind.

Conclusion

It was a crazy match in Brugge and one that definitely deserved to end in a draw.

Barcelona dominated possession and pinned Club Brugge inside their own final third for most of the match, but the aggressive high line cost them once again.

Barcelona’s dominance last season was in large part due to their counterpressing when they lost the ball.

Last season, Barcelona had a PPDA of 7.3, which was the lowest mark across Europe’s top five leagues; however, this season, that has risen to 8.8.

Their number of high recoveries per 90 minutes has gone from 17 last season to 14.3 this season.

I know these don’t look like big differences, but if Barcelona are going to continue to play this extreme high line, it makes a huge difference if they aren’t closing the ball down with the same intensity they did a season ago.

Barcelona had been doing a good job defending long balls so far in their three Champions League matches, allowing only a 45.2% completion rate on long passes.

Club Brugge connected on 12 of their 20 long passes, which ultimately proved the difference in the match.

Barcelona will improve as they get healthier, but their high line always leaves the door open for any opponent to get back into the match.

Once the intensity off the ball improves, the high line’s effectiveness will return to where it was last season.
