Femi Azeez

Femi Azeez has made a name for himself since arriving at Millwall in 2024.

In the 2025/2026 season, he has become one of the top performers in the EFL Championship.

The Englishman leads his team in goal contributions, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists, proving to be a lethal weapon for Alex Neil.

With his help, Millwall look in a good position to earn promotion to the Premier League.

After 40 games, they sit in second with 72 points, 21 wins, nine draws, and 10 losses.

In this Femi Azeez scout report and player analysis, we will discuss Femi Azeez’s player profile and analyse his qualities.

Femi Azeez Tactical Profile & Playing Style

Azeez is a left-footed right-winger who can also play on the left side.

His heat map suggests that he prefers staying wide and receiving to feet.

Femi Azeez Heat Map & Position Map 2025/2026

Femi Azeez heatmap

The Englishman is very direct in his approach; he opts for quick take-ons and attempts to either cut inside for an early shot or touch it down the line for a cross or a cut back.

He attempts 4.04 dribbles per 90 minutes and averages 5.5–7.0 progressive carries per 90, which shows his influence in transition.

He also delivers a high volume of crosses (8.57 attempted crosses per 90) and has 2.26 key passes per 90, indicating a significant role in his team’s chance creation.

Apart from his presence in the wide channel, he also positions himself in the half-space, acting like an inside forward, allowing the full-back to exploit the width.

He attempts 3.02 shots per 90, which come from the edge of the box through either cutting inside or receiving in the half-space.

Femi Azeez Strengths

Femi Azeez regularly hugs the touchline and prefers receiving to feet to influence the game.

Azeez cuts inside

Whenever his direct opponent overcommits to one side, he chooses to go the other way, showcasing his confidence in taking players on.

Femi Azeez looks to attack the inside space.

In this situation, his full-back makes an underlapping run, dragging a defender.

The winger exploits the space, while his opponent cuts the space down the line, allowing him in-field.

Cuts in from left flank

Similarly, on the left flank, he uses the opponent’s momentum against him.

Realising that Femi Azeez is left-footed, the defender anticipates him going down the line and engages to cut off the wide space.

Femi Azeez recognises the inside space and cuts across against the defender’s momentum; this action eventually yields a shooting opportunity from inside the zone-14.

Being light on his feet and recognising situations to drive forward are what make the 24-year-old a constant threat on the ball.

His ability to deliver crosses forces opponents to overcommit to close down space.

Inverted cross

In 1v1 situations, he needs a small opening to whip a cross in; sometimes, just a good first touch sets him up for a cross on his dominant foot.

He also uses his teammates’ runs well to utilise space to find crossing opportunities.

Inverted cross I

The underlapping run from his teammate drags an opponent away, which opens a pocket in the half-space.

Azeez is quick to capitalise by taking his touch inside and delivering.

There is a reason he gets a high volume of cutting-inside actions: he can deliver and shoot with both feet.

Wingers who are one-footed are slightly easier to defend, as defenders can cut off space on the dominant foot and contain their actions.

However, overcommitting one side against Femi Azeez makes his job easier; he can go either way and create something.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Weak-foot-cross-.mp4

The opponent shows him to his weaker foot, cutting the option to combine with his teammate in the half-space.

However, Azeez takes the space, shifts the ball to his right foot, and delivers a low cross, which ends up in a goal for Millwall.

Acknowledging his quality, his opponents at times double-team him to trap him.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Weak-foot-cross-I.mp4

In transition, the opponents try to make a 2v1 against him to keep him from cutting inside.

Femi Azeez goes down the line instead and delivers a cross, which ends up in a tap-in at the back post.

He does not need to dribble past his direct opponent clearly; creating a bit of space is sufficient for him to deliver a quality final pass.

This is a quality all elite creators possess.

Femi Azeez can generate quick bursts of pace and change in direction when taking players on; it further helps him be more deceptive.

The defenders always have to be on their toes, as he can go either way, and rapidly.

Beating 2 opponents

The opponents double up on the Englishman, one of them cutting the space down the line, while the other one is ready to pounce the moment he cuts inside.

Femi Azeez performs a small burst inside to take the touch away from the first defender, before making a big burst down the line, beating both.

This is successful because the second defender is square the moment Femi Azeez cuts inside, allowing the Englishman to take a touch across him.

Femi Azeez, hugging the touchline, opens up space for his teammates in the half-space when he is off the ball.

Because of the threat he poses, he attracts opponents, creating space for his teammates nearby.

Creating space for teammate

A teammate drives with the ball into the half-space.

Femi Azeez stays wide, which attracts the opposition full-back.

This opens space further up for the ball-carrier.

In to out blind side run 1

To receive in the wide area, Femi Azeez sometimes starts his runs from the central channel.

The Millwall right-back receives during build-up; Femi Azeez starts an in-to-out run on the opponent’s blind side.

The way he moves and positions himself across the pitch suggests he prefers to receive the ball under pressure from one side, ideally with him facing it.

Whenever he receives with his back to goal, he either plays it back or takes his first touch away from the pressure, i.e. towards his own goal.

Apart from a heavy presence in the wide channel, Femi Azeez also routinely gets involved in the half-space.

Receives in half space to shoot

Femi Azeez receives in the half-space with space and time to spare.

He takes a touch and gets a shot away.

In this situation, the right-back is the widest player.

Receiving in half space going down the line

He also receives in the half-space sometimes to drive it down the line, depending on where the space is available.

The right-back finds Femi Azeez in the half-space; the defender, engaging with the winger, cuts the inside space while closing him down.

The Englishman decides to beat him by taking a touch down the line.

The space available behind is the zone from which most low crosses and cut-backs are played.

Femi Azeez picks the ball up in the half-space after a clearance from the opponents.

The nearest opponent presses while cutting off the inside space.

The 24-year-old plays a quick one-two with an advanced teammate to receive inside zone-14, where he gets enough time to take a touch and bury it into the back of the net.

Apart from receiving the ball in the half-space and the central zone, he can also make runs in-behind like an inside forward.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Run-in-behind-to-score.mp4

His starting position is wide, which stretches his direct opponent.

This opens the space for him to make the run.

Femi Azeez adeptly curves his run to stay onside, shields the ball well once it drops, and expertly finishes it off with his weak foot.

Femi Azeez gets involved defensively; his contribution, although not significantly defining, is fairly functional to Millwall’s requirements.

He is willing to engage and help in maintaining the team’s defensive structure.

Millwall play in a 4-2-3-1 formation; however, while pressing, one of the pivots steps up to make it a 4-1-4-1 at times.

Azeez puts pressure

Millwall initiate a press in the opposition half.

While his teammates have closely marked the short options, Femi Azeez engages the ball carrier.

This is the most common scenario where the Englishman gets involved defensively.

He gets between 1.5 and 1.7 tackles per 90, along with 0.4–0.6 interceptions.

Most of these actions come in the wide area and mid-third.

He engages in a high number of ground duels (around 14 per 90) and gets a success rate of about 50%.

Azeez man mark

The opponents attempt to play an in-to-out pass.

Femi Azeez steps in at the right time to close in on the opposition full-back.

This forces the opposition to play backwards.

Femi Azeez Weaknesses & Solutions

As much as he is a threat with his dribbling, crossing, and shooting, he is not the type of player to be deliberate about combination play.

Solution 1

It means that he forces a dribble even in situations where a combination play would open things up.

He loses the ball in this 1v1 because he forced the dribble.

A simple solution is to play a quick one-two to change the angle, opening shooting space in the process.

Forcing attacking play on his own is an area of concern for Femi Azeez.

Although he has the quality to deliver the end product, it is prudent to utilise teammates in some situations.

Solution 2

The winger is closed down by three opponents.

Meanwhile, his full-back makes an overlapping run, ready to exploit the space down the line.

The simple solution would be to make use of the relationship and lay it off to the full-back.

This would give them an open crossing lane.

Femi Azeez is not the type of player to recognise situations to hold onto the ball and recycle possession.

This makes him better suited to transition-heavy teams than to possession-based systems.

Solution 3

Millwall are in a 3v3 in the wide area, with little space to work with.

They get dispossessed through Femi Azeez forcing the attack.

The solution in this situation is to play sideways and recycle possession by shifting play.

These are the sort of decisions that sometimes differentiate good wingers from the elite ones.

Solution 4

Another situation where the Englishman is bound to be closed down by multiple opponents.

Meanwhile, a teammate making an underlap goes unnoticed.

By releasing him, they can get a clearer passing lane into the box.

His defensive contribution sometimes can leave more to be desired.

Solution 5 1

Being aware of what angle to cut when engaging with the ball-carrier is an area he needs to work on.

A midfielder already covers the inside pass, so he can cut off the outside pass and press his direct opponent.

However, he stays inside and allows the pass to go to the opposition winger.

The opponents end up finding progression.

Conclusion

Femi Azeez is a talented, skilful, direct, and decisive left-footed right-winger who can create danger by cutting inside to shoot, cutting inside to cross, and going down the line to cross or cut back.

He is better suited to transition-heavy sides than to a possession-based team.

He hugs the touchline and attempts a high volume of dribbles and shots.

Owing to the number of repetitions, he has racked up impressive numbers for his side this season.

His defensive contribution is functional: he stays in structure, engages when required, and presses with moderate intensity.

His ground duel involvement is high as well.

He has scope for improvement in terms of combining with his teammates and recycling possession when required.

Meanwhile, he also needs to work on being aware of passing lanes while under pressure.
