Josh King is a 19-year-old attacking midfielder who currently plays for Fulham and the England U21 national team.
King is enjoying a breakout season, his first full Premier League campaign, in which he has amassed 24 appearances, including 13 starts and over 1,000 minutes of football.
This Josh King scout report analyses his technical qualities in possession, his effectiveness out of possession, and his physical and psychological traits, including his footballing intelligence, one of his standout qualities.
Josh King Style Of Play
Josh King operates primarily as an attacking midfielder behind the striker.
He has also been deployed deeper as a central midfielder and occasionally as a centre-forward, demonstrating impressive versatility for this stage of his development.
His role is to receive on the half-turn and progress play, usually to the wide players.
King excels in the second phase of build-up and combines well with teammates in close proximity.
Josh King In Possession
Josh King displays very good spatial awareness.
He finds pockets of space in the build-up phase where he effectively turns and progresses play.
He recognises pressure through effective scanning.
He anticipates contact well and rides challenges effectively.
His first touch is impressive, especially on the half-turn, setting up his next action well.
He keeps an open body shape when receiving in midfield, where he demonstrates impressive press-resistance, using his body positioning and shielding ability to retain possession.

Figure 1: Josh King receiving on the half-turn
Josh King is a strong ball carrier who drives effectively with the ball into the final third.
Once there, he likes to combine in short sequences of one-touch passes, to varying success.
Nevertheless, he is creative in the final third in and around the box.
He often makes the right decision even under intense pressure, such as when he receives in tight spaces.
Josh King has a soft touch that helps him when he receives and dribbles, allowing him to keep the ball close to his body at all times.
He does the underrated, difficult job of connecting the midfield to the attack very effectively.
Josh King Out Of Possession
Josh King intercepts passes and blocks shots well, especially on the edge of the box, where he positions himself intelligently.
King commits wholeheartedly to duels but does not yet dominate 50/50s, winning less than half of his duels; this is expected at this stage in his development.
King rarely wins aerial duels (approximately a quarter), which is again expected for his stage of development, especially given his height and frame.
Furthermore, when there are bouncing or hip-height duels, he often loses out.
He can still become effective by being a nuisance and forcing the opposition into making headers from awkward positions, increasing the likelihood of his team winning the second ball and ultimately gaining possession: teams do not always have to win the first ball to win possession.
Josh King presses intelligently and intensely, not aimlessly.
This is valuable for a team like Fulham, where they will not have possession for long periods in every game.
He covers shadows well and angles his runs impressively to force opposition players into making unwanted passes.
King often wins the ball high up the pitch in dangerous areas, forcing turnovers and mistakes, this is a significant strength and one of the reasons he plays so consistently at such a young age.

He counterpresses very effectively and with intensity, often doing this in attacking areas and around his own box before driving forward.
King drops back to defend, often into his own box, demonstrating an impressive work ethic and attitude, both valuable for teams that need to suffer in games and absorb sustained pressure.
Josh King scans well, understanding the space and distances between himself and his teammates, reducing the risk of attacking lines being broken with one pass.
Josh King Technical Evaluation
Josh King Passing
Josh King’s short passes can be inconsistent, passing to the incorrect foot with awkward weighting and timing.
This can slow down transition situations; he is competent but not yet reliable enough for a Premier League side looking to be consistently effective in transition.
King attempts long passes infrequently, only when playing over the backline to a runner in behind, or occasionally to switch play, often from left to right.
His pass selection is sound, but he struggles with the weighting at times.
One of his strengths is that he consistently plays forward or risky passes to hopefully unlock defences; however, this leads to him turning over possession quite frequently.

Figure 3: Josh King pass weighting issue
Combination play in the final third is variable in its success.
For those sequences to work, the combinations must be flawless, and passing to the incorrect foot will ruin the chances of a successful combination, making penetration through the defensive line more difficult.
However, the fact that he consistently tries to go forward and create high-quality chances is a strength of King’s that must not be deterred.
It is part of what makes him so effective already at such a young age.
Josh King First Touch
Josh King receives extremely well on the half-turn and distributes wide before making powerful runs forward.
He often then resorts to trying to run in behind the last line, which he does consistently.
It would be good to see him try to receive the ball again in front of the last line of defence, giving him an opportunity to show his creativity in the final third, a strength of his, instead of running in behind; however, this might be a tactical instruction.
He should trust himself to receive under intense pressure from all directions; his touch and spatial awareness are definitely good enough to receive and attract pressure before offloading or beating players.
This may create more chances and help Fulham sustain attacks more effectively.
Josh King Shooting
Josh King connects well with the ball but is not yet reliable enough in front of goal in terms of accuracy; it will come with time.
He can sometimes shoot at awkward angles or low expected goal (xG) opportunities.
He can try to overhit the ball, compromising his technique and meaning he can miss the target significantly, often going over the bar.
However, he sets himself up for shots well.
Josh King Tactical Intelligence & Decision-Making
Josh King takes risks on the ball, goes forward consistently, and his first thought is to play forward, which is fantastic.
He excels in games where there is space in midfield to turn and progress play.
He picks up spaces really well in general and receives well under tight pressure.
He clears the ball at the correct time and knows when to bring it down and play.
Josh King makes fouls at intelligent times, rarely in dangerous areas, usually when the other team is in transition, mitigating potential attacks and stopping dangerous ones.
King shows good, developing box movement that will lead to goals over time.
He anticipates balls into the box well.
Josh King Physical & Athletic Profile
Josh King is quick over the first five yards, allowing him to beat players effectively and go across them, drawing fouls or taking players out of the game.
He lulls defenders before exploding past them, utilising and knowing how and when to change pace well, allowing him to bypass and manipulate defenders effectively, similar to how Thiago Alcântara used to.
This is evident when Josh King plays deeper on the pitch.

Figure 4: Josh King carrying the ball forward
Josh King is agile with a low centre of gravity, allowing him to manipulate defenders and turn quickly and effectively to evade them.
This leads defenders to take him out and win a lot of fouls, often from behind while turning or shielding the ball, or while driving into attacking areas.

Figure 5: Josh King winning a foul after positioning his body well
It is a good sign, as it often means he is composed and unafraid to receive under pressure when oncoming defenders are approaching.
He is still in the process of transitioning from youth to men’s football.
His low centre of gravity and compact frame mean it is normal for him to be physically overpowered at times, especially at this stage in his development.
Hopefully, over the next few seasons, this will happen less frequently.
Even though he is relatively small, he can still become effective in duels; examples of players he should strive to emulate in this regard are Martin Ødegaard and Bernardo Silva.
Josh King Areas For Improvement
Josh King has previously been deployed as a central midfielder, where he is tasked with assisting as a single pivot or double pivot in the first phase of build-up.
He has struggled here, primarily due to his passing not being consistently accurate enough.
He would struggle in a double pivot in a positional play side, where passing during the build up phase needs to be perfect.
At the moment, he should primarily be deployed further forward, where his strengths are more prominent and weaknesses less pronounced.
To prevent getting pushed off the ball and make it harder for the attacker to win the ball, he could improve at keeping the ball on his safe side or using his body to step across defenders.
Conclusion
Josh King is an exceptional talent who can become an extremely effective Premier League player and England international.
This football analysis has shown his standout footballing intelligence, press resistance, and intelligent pressing make him a consistent starter at 19 in his debut senior season.
While physical duels and passing consistency need refinement as he develops physically, his spatial awareness, work ethic, and risk-taking in possession position him for a bright future.
Deployed optimally as an attacking midfielder, Josh King’s ability to progress play, win the ball high, and manipulate defenders with pace changes will see him thrive.
With time, his box movement and finishing accuracy will add goals, fulfilling his potential in the Premier League and beyond.
