Several top European clubs were said to be engaged in a battle over the signature of Mahamadou Sangaré from Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of the summer.

Ultimately, it was Premier League giants Manchester City who emerged victorious, adding the 18-year-old forward to their youth ranks.

Sangaré was one of the stars of last season’s UEFA Youth League—Europe’s premier youth football competition at club level.

Then, at just 17 years of age, left-footed Sangaré scored eight goals in just six games.

He ended the competition as joint-top goalscorer despite Les Parisiens failing to make it to the knockout stage.

The Mali-born France U18 international joined PSG from Montrouge in 2023 and spent two years developing in Les Parisiens’ youth academy.

Mahamadou Sangaré style of play is flexible and ready to be moulded into a specific ‘type’ of forward.

From watching the 177cm / 5’10” Sangaré, we can see shades of Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi in his game, thanks to his left-footedness, pace, and dribbling quality.

He could yet evolve into a centre-forward, where he’s played chiefly thus far, or a wide forward that could fit nicely into a fluid front three, full of players rotating frequently with one another to constantly pose new challenges to the opposing defence.

Our Mahamadou Sangaré scouting report and player analysis article sheds light on why this young forward was so in-demand at the start of this summer, beyond just highlighting the teenager’s goalscoring statistics.

In this football analysis, we dive into the key strengths and weaknesses of Sangaré’s game and examine why he is such a standout dribbler and strong goal-scoring threat.

We will also examine how his new coaches at Man City can help the 18-year-old improve his playmaking abilities, as he fights for a first-team spot in Pep Guardiola’s side.

Mahamadou Sangaré In The Final Third

Let’s start by analysing Mahamadou Sangaré’s game in the final third—the main area that will have drawn so many eyeballs to the young talent.

As stated, and as is evident from his UEFA Youth League performance last season, finishing is a significant strength in the youngster’s game at his current level.

The left-footed striker loves curling the ball towards the corners of the net on his stronger side.

He frequently demonstrates an excellent ability to place the ball into the most difficult-to-reach parts of the net, skilfully evading the opposing goalkeeper’s reach.

Sangaré is a high-volume shooter, yet retains a high shot accuracy rate; he places precision over power in front of goal.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 1 shows a Mahamadou Sangaré finish for PSG.

Here, we see Sangaré curling the ball to the far post.

He shoots first-time, across his body in this instance—not an easy technique to pull off, yet one the young forward manages to execute perfectly here.

Aside from the shooting technique, which we’ve now established is highly impressive for a young forward, Sangaré’s movement was critical to the creation of this goal.

He arrives in the box relatively late, maintaining enough distance from the defenders that he’d have a decent amount of space around him to perform this shot when the ball arrived via the low-driven cross from the left wing.

Sangaré likes to keep himself at a distance from the opposing centre-backs like this, frequently making late runs into the high-value goalscoring positions where his teammates would like to find him, such as the area where he receives the low cross here.

Should defenders get too tight to Sangaré, however, he possesses exquisite ball control and agility, which can help him evade challengers and glide past them.

So, it’s a tricky balancing act for defenders going up against this young talent.

Sangaré’s combination of intelligent late runs into high-value positions and deadly accurate shooting is, primarily, what makes him the goal machine he proved to be with PSG.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 2 shows a late Mahamadou Sangaré run into a valuable goalscoring position.

In our following example, we join the action just after Mahamadou Sangaré has sprung into life and begun darting towards the six-yard box.

The young attacker’s run comes late, again, just as it looks as if his teammate on the right wing is ready to cross.

Furthermore, Sangaré intelligently targets the opposing left centre-back’s blind side with his run, knowing the defender is preoccupied with tracking the right winger’s movement and the impending cross.

Sangaré’s quickness helps him get into a dangerous goalscoring position as this cross comes in before either centre-back can react to his movement.

This sets him up to meet the incoming cross and direct it goalward.

Mahamadou Sangaré is an extremely pacey forward.

This can help his side create chances via his off-the-ball movement, which is incredibly difficult to track, as seen above, and, of course, in offensive transitions.

Sangaré’s quickness doesn’t just make him a danger via his off-the-ball movement in the final third and in transition.

The 18-year-old is also well able to carry the ball at pace, making him a major threat when he’s given space to dribble into behind the opposition’s backline.

So, whether he’s running in behind off the ball against a high line or carrying the ball into space behind the opposing backline, if Sangaré is given space to attack between the defence and the goal, he’s nearly impossible to stop without fouling him.

The striker’s ability to carry the ball at pace and quickly change direction helps him to draw quite a lot of fouls from opponents.

Sangaré needs to learn to time his runs a bit better, as he’s still caught offside when trying to go in behind a little too frequently for the level he’d like to get to.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 3 shows an example of Mahamadou Sangaré playing a through ball in the final third.

Apart from setting himself up for goalscoring opportunities in the final third, Mahamadou Sangaré will also drop off from the defenders and try to link up with the midfield during the chance creation phase.

He’s not just a threat in terms of his late runs into the box or pacey runs targeting space behind an opposing backline.

Still, he’s also capable of dropping off into space between the defence and midfield lines and turning creator, making space for teammates to perform out-to-in runs.

Sangaré does like to mix things up in terms of his movement and roles up front—he can be quite a complete forward in that regard, as he’s comfortable being both a receiver and a provider in terms of chance creation.

However, Sangaré’s key passing quality could use some improvement.

He ends up in positions to provide assists more often than he actually does, sometimes due to the quality of his pass and sometimes due to his decision-making, which also has some room for improvement.

At times, he’d do well to select simpler options instead of over-complicating his next move.

Mahamadou Sangaré’s movement is strong, as are his dribbling and finishing abilities.

The technical quality of his passing is probably the main area related to his final third performance, which can be improved to get his game ready for Pep Guardiola and ensure he’s as efficient as possible with his chance creation attempts.

Mahamadou Sangaré In Build-Up & Ball Progression

Mahamadou Sangaré can also offer his team a lot outside of the final third during possession phases—especially the ball progression phase—primarily through his off-the-ball movement.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 4 shows an example of Mahamadou Sangaré dropping off to link up with the midfield during the ball progression phase.

As in the final third, Sangaré is commonly found dropping into space between the opposition’s backline and midfield line during the progression phase.

Here, the forward drops into that space to give the ball-carrying midfielder a forward passing option.

In this case, the opposition defend well against Sangaré, as a centre-back follows him fairly closely and a midfielder quickly drops to further congest the space the attacker has to operate within after receiving the ball.

Sangaré does help the ball-carrying midfielder release the ball forward, but due to the intense pressure he’s quickly put under, he’s forced to play the ball back to PSG’s right centre-back—deep inside Les Parisiens’ half.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 5 shows another instance of Mahamadou Sangaré receiving deep with his back to goal.

In our following example, Mahamadou Sangaré again links up with his deeper teammates by dropping off from the forward line towards midfield.

In this case, he doesn’t have any pressure coming from behind, but an opposing midfielder is tracking back to challenge the forward.

Sangaré sees the onrushing opponent and begins manoeuvring his way around the challenger.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 6 shows the continuation of this move.

Sangaré’s reactions, quick feet, ball control, balance and agility all shine through here.

The forward shimmies around the pressing opponent and quickly completes a carry around him.

This leaves the France U18 international in space centrally to find a teammate and help his side continue their attack.

In this passage of play, we catch a glimpse of how Mahamadou Sangaré can help link defence to attack for his team and play a key role in ball progression.

As we stated when discussing his work in the final third, Sangaré’s decision-making can sometimes be called into question in scenarios like the one shown above.

He will sometimes take too much out of the ball or select poor passing options; that’s not uncommon for a young player, though.

Still, it’s essential that he’s aware of those weaknesses and puts in effort with his coaches at Man City to address any issues in his game, thereby crafting himself into a more mature and reliable player.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 7 shows Mahamadou Sangaré receiving the ball in the build-up phase, occupying a full-back position.

Mahamadou Sangaré lined up on the right wing in this particular game, above.

In build-up, we frequently saw him dropping deep to receive from the backline.

This role showcased his ability to progress via carries—a highly valuable trait in a wide player.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 8 illustrates the progression of this move.

In this case, Mahamadou Sangaré stormed past the onrushing opponent, leaving him in his tracks.

The opponent ended up fouling the rapid attacker, handing PSG a free kick deep inside their own half.

This wasn’t the most threatening free kick of all time won by Sangaré, but the move does highlight the attacker’s positive intent and confidence with the ball at his feet to take on his opponent.

Indeed, Sangaré will sometimes take on dribbles he’d perhaps be best off avoiding, including those in deeper areas, which can lead to a loss of possession.

Again, his decision-making is not yet ideal.

However, there’s no harm in Sangaré having confidence in his take-on ability, especially when it’s at such a high level.

This skill is most valuable in the final third, where Sangaré frequently wins fouls in dangerous positions for his side and carries the ball into valuable positions for chance creation.

The attacker’s creativity can definitely use some improvement.

He’s still quite raw in his creative decision-making and ability to execute key passes in the final third.

Nevertheless, Sangaré’s pace and ball-carrying ability are a deadly combination, which can get the ball into desirable positions for his side.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 9 shows another instance of Mahamadou Sangaré progressing from deep in this game.

Another example from this same fixture shows Sangaré passing into midfield from deep before carrying on his run forward, in search of what could be a lethal return ball, given the attacker’s pace and quality against a high line.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 10 shows how this move progresses.

In the end, Sangaré doesn’t receive the return pass, with his teammate pulling the ball back towards midfield despite the 18-year-old’s threatening run.

Still, this passage of play highlights two critical aspects of the new City signing’s game.

Firstly, we have a clear example of Mahamadou Sangaré’s joy in linking up with teammates through passing combinations, such as this attempted one-two.

Secondly, we see Sangaré’s intent to pull off threatening runs into space; the attacker is fully aware of his threat when he has space to attack and tries to give his team opportunities to exploit that threat.

Sangaré has a great first touch and ball-carrying ability that can help his team build up and progress the ball when he drops into the kinds of spaces he likes to occupy in those phases of play.

His size doesn’t help him with aerial duels, making long balls difficult to deal with effectively.

Additionally, his decision-making, particularly in terms of passing, needs to be refined to further develop his creative game.

Mahamadou Sangaré In Defence

Last, we’ll touch on Mahamadou Sangaré’s defensive game.

From what we’ve seen of the youngster so far, he’s open to applying high pressure, tracking back and helping his team out without the ball.

mahamadou-sangare-scout-report-man-city-2025-2026-analysis-tactics
Figure 11 shows Mahamadou Sangaré pressing high on the opposition’s backline.

Above, for instance, Sangaré pounced on a backwards pass and heavy touch from the opponent to regain possession for PSG on the edge of the box.

Where Sangaré’s defensive game can improve is, as with his creative game, in relation to his decision-making.

The 18-year-old is sometimes too eager to jump into pressing, rather than waiting for the appropriate pressing trigger.

This can leave him isolated under pressure, allowing the opposition to play around him too easily, weakening the team’s defensive efforts.

Sangaré needs to develop more maturity in his defensive game and become more acquainted with the tactical side of when to press and when not to press.

If he can do so, thanks to his rapid pace and impressive work rate, he can become a highly valuable asset without the ball.

Conclusion

To conclude our Mahamadou Sangaré player analysis and scout report, we’ll reinforce the comparison to BVB‘s Karim Adeyemi from the introduction.

Like Adeyemi, Sangaré’s finishing, pace and dribbling abilities are the standout traits.

These are the qualities that attracted so much attention from all around Europe for the youngster at the start of the summer.

As you might expect from a teenager, he’s far from the finished product.

He still has plenty of room to grow physically, technically and mentally, as outlined in detail throughout our analysis above.

However, in transferring to Man City, he has selected a solid environment at Manchester City, which will further hone those physical, mental, and technical traits. So, City fans would be justified in being quietly optimistic about this particular young signing.

At his age, staying humble and maintaining a high work rate will be crucial to his development into the player he can be.
