LaLiga 24/25: Winter Transfers- scouting report tactics

The winter transfer window is usually filled with teams scrambling to sign players who can instantly contribute to their respective team’s overall aspirations, whether that relates to a bid to stay in the division or potentially challenge right at the top.

We have also seen some top European clubs find an opportunity to acquire talented players for the future, but this was not necessarily the case in La Liga this season.

As one of the world’s marquee league competitions, clubs in Spain’s top flight spent a total of €26.1m during the winter transfer window, ranking only 16th among professional football leagues worldwide.

The English Premier League topped those charts with a whopping €500M expenditure in January, which really begins to portray just how quiet the transfer activity was in Spain.

This can be attributed to several key factors, but most notably, the recognition that budget restraints and compliance with financial regulations are at the forefront of every team’s mind.

With both Barcelona and Real Madrid focusing on free-agent signings for the upcoming summer window and a clear emphasis on contract renewals for their current superstars, we saw very little movement towards the top end of La Liga.

Therefore, our tactical analysis and scouting report will begin to highlight several smart acquisitions which allowed other LaLiga outfits to bolster their key problem areas ahead of a crucial second half of the season.

Tajon Buchanan Scout Report At Villarreal

The beginning of 2025 marks another key timestamp on the road to a huge year for North America in 2026, with one Canadian footballer, in particular, looking to improve his overall stock before the upcoming World Cup.

Tajon Buchanan has made the switch from Inter to Villarreal on loan, with the Canadian seeming to struggle for impactful minutes in Milan, where he could continue his professional development.

Buchanan has established himself as a regular within his national setup.

Fans have come to appreciate the more nuanced elements of his game rather than his raw pace and energy, which allowed him to move from the MLS to mainland Europe.

He struggled to play regular minutes at Inter, especially considering that Buchanan has been plagued by a tibia injury that cut short his chance to impress on the global stage during last summer’s Copa América.

Under Simone Inzaghi’s leadership, Buchanan has operated as the right wing-back in Inter’s famous 3-5-2 setup.

It has allowed the Canadian to showcase his attacking desire when isolated in 1v1 dribble scenarios on the right flank.

He consistently looks to bypass opposing full-backs with his raw speed before crafting high-quality chances in the final third.

LaLiga 24/25: Winter Transfers- scouting report tactics

However, in this hybrid role, Buchanan also has to remain sharp when out of possession to conduct his defensive duties, making timely interceptions and winning duels to help relieve pressure.

It begs the question as to what sort of role Tajon Buchanan will have when we consider the personnel that Villarreal already has and, most importantly, how these positions are utilised in Marcelino’s tactical setup.

While Buchanan’s positional versatility and ability to play that wing-back role on either flank can only benefit the Canadian’s future, Marcelino’s use of his full-backs would suggest that Buchanan would benefit from a more advanced position.

Sergi Cardona is often utilised as a more progressive member of Villarreal’s squad, getting high up the pitch from left-back, leaving the Villarreal right-back with a more conservative role tucking into a back three to strengthen the Yellow Submarine’s rest defence.

For this reason, Buchanan’s opportunities as an out-and-out right-back appear limited, especially when you recognise that the majority of Villarreal’s attacking progression on the right wing comes from underlapping half-space runs from their interior attacking midfielders.

Now, there is obviously a reason why Villarreal have pursued the winger for several years, and opportunities in that more advanced right-wing/midfield position could become more apparent.

Buchanan could offer a varied profile when competing against the likes of Yeremy Pino and Nicolas Pépé.

His chaotic but calculated runs in behind him are another tactic Marcelino can use to unlock the low block of their opposition.

In more advanced areas of the pitch, Buchanan also represents an effective target player whose aerial prowess can allow his defensive unit to successfully relieve a high-pressing effort by hitting targeted long balls for the Canadian to link play.

It mirrors a similar dynamic that Atlético experienced this season when using Giuliano Simeone to provide that spark and energy in the final third, in turn creating space for his more technical, centralised teammates.

Villarreal also prefers to operate in a mid-block position when out of possession, focusing on a more compact defensive structure by denying themselves the opportunity to execute a high press.

For this reason, Villarreal currently ranks just 16th in La Liga with a PPDA score of 12.92, but Buchanan can help to strengthen these figures when we consider his spell at Inter.

Not only does the Canadian winger offer an impressive physical frame to help complete successful aerial duels, but he also possesses the desire to press high and pin opposing ball carriers to stunt their progression.

This was imperative when holding Inter’s width along the right flank, where Buchanan could create high turnovers before linking play and maintaining possession within the final third.

Real Betis’ Attacking Acquisitions

Having mentioned the necessity for some teams to strengthen areas of weakness during the transfer window, it became quickly apparent that Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis were targeting some ambitious moves to bolster their attacking threat.

This may have been an obvious decision once promising winger Assane Diao made his way out of Seville to Como for around €12m.

Still, the underlying statistics would indicate that a refreshed attacking arsenal was definitely warranted.

Real Betis find themselves in a heavily contested battle for the European qualification spots in La Liga but currently represent the fifth-largest expected goals underperformers across Europe’s top-five leagues.

They possess a goal — xG figure of around — 7.8, which would indicate a significant issue concerning their chance conversion and clinical nature in front of goal.

It would appear as though that has been the damning metric for Betis this season, with Los Verdiblancos having no doubts regarding their ability to enter the opponent’s penalty area, creating the fifth-most penalty area touches in the division (17.48 per 90).

Betis’ first signing of significant interest would have to be the arrival of Antony from Manchester United.

The Brazilian winger has been offered an opportunity to revive his career, especially considering the limited minutes he was given after the arrival of Rúben Amorim.

On the back of an MVP performance in his Real Betis debut, it has become apparent that Antony may just possess some of the key qualities that Pellegrini has been searching for from his Diao replacement.

Antony embodies the direct right-winger role that Betis have utilised under the Chilean manager, with less of an overemphasis on his creativity due to the central progressors like Lo Celso and Isco.

In his home debut, Antony looked to invert and engage in isolated battles against his opposing full-back, with forward runners able to find pockets of space within the final third.

LaLiga 24/25: Winter Transfers- scouting report tactics

The direct nature of the Brazilian matches what we saw during his first season at Old Trafford after his big-money move from Ajax, having ranked within the top 5% of Premier League wingers for shots per 90 (3.60).

Betis were able to take the lead against Athletic Club as a result of one of these shot-ending sequences, with Antony taking on a well-struck shot having crafted important space on the edge of the box.

Whilst the strike forced an impressive save from Unai Simon, Isco was on hand to tap in the rebound as part of Betis’ improved box presence—highlighting Antony’s ability to affect the game positively for his new side.

Real Betis fans should also be excited about the opportunity for their box presence to be strengthened even further, with the deadline day arrival of Cucho Hernández marking the most noteworthy signing of the La Liga window.

Cucho has arrived back in Europe for around €16m from Columbus Crew, having dazzled over in the States as one of the MLS’ most prolific goalscorers.

In fact, we previously named him to our MLS Team of the Season for 2024, largely because of his defensive contributions out of possession.

However, his attacking attributes blend nicely with Betis’ style in the final third.

Pellegrini has long preferred a more versatile, free-flowing attacking setup for his Betis side.

This setup promotes freedom of movement, with his attacking quartet interchangeable to create space within the opposition’s defensive line.

This goes hand in hand with Cucho’s development under Wilfried Nancy at Columbus Crew, where the Colombian stood out with his ability to drop deep and manipulate the positioning of his markers.

LaLiga 24/25: Winter Transfers- scouting report tactics

Picking up more positions in and around Zone 14 bodes well for Cucho’s proficiency in creating key chances and even dropping in to create more space for long-range shooting opportunities.

Cucho recorded an impressive 6.94 progressive passes per 90, ranking him within the top 1% of forwards in the MLS last season, further highlighting how he could become that false nine presence at times to release the Betis wingers in behind at times.

0.46 non-penalty xG per match last season only reinforces the idea that the Colombian forward can work effectively to combat Betis’ inefficiency in front of the net.

Still, the ability to outscore his expected goals figure by +5 would also indicate how Cucho adds value to his chances with expert placement and ball-striking.

Stefan Bajčetić Scout Report At Las Palmas

The final player of our analysis highlights another young player looking to continue his professional development after a huge cultural shift at his parent club.

With the departure of Jürgen Klopp from Liverpool, it became apparent that new manager Arne Slot decided that midfielder Stefan Bajčetić would have to further evolve his overall skillset in order to find a place in his side.

LaLiga 24/25: Winter Transfers- scouting report tactics

A loan move to Pep Lijnders’ Red Bull Salzburg offered an important developmental period, as the Dutch manager played Champions League football within a familiar tactical system.

However, he was quickly relieved of his duties.

Bajčetić will now spend the rest of the season on loan at Diego Martínez’s Las Palmas, with a return to Spanish football offering the midfielder an opportunity to integrate within a footballing philosophy that resembles some of his key qualities.

After a dismal start to this La Liga season, Martínez has guided Palmas to a respectable position off the back of an impressive switch towards a more pragmatic style of football.

Las Palmas had become synonymous with a possession-based style under their previous managers.

Still, Martínez has opted for more defensive solidity to help mitigate the concession of goals which plagued their early matches.

With Las Palmas experiencing another dip in form after the winter break, Bajčetić offers another multi-faceted presence within the centre of midfield who isn’t afraid to engage in defensive actions.

Stefan Bajčetić Heat Map

LaLiga 24/25: Winter Transfers- scouting report tactics

During his short stint in the Austrian Bundesliga, Bajčetić recorded an imposing 8.37 successful duels per 90 with an overall success percentage of 62%, positioned nicely within the top 5% of midfielders at just 20 years old.

In line with Las Palmas’ recent shift to a more unpredictable style of play, the Liverpool midfielder can also inject an element of attacking flair and drive with his 2.35 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, which we saw at RB Salzburg.

An effective mixture of offensive and defensive prowess would certainly bode well for a potential midfield pairing with Kirian, allowing Las Palmas’ former midfield orchestrator to have more frequent opportunities to exercise his creative talents with Bajčetić engaging in the ball-winning aspects of double-pivot play.

Even from just watching his experiences in this season’s Champions League and his debut for Las Palmas, it is clear that Bajčetić maintains a passionate desire to press his opposition and regain possession at the earliest opportunity.

This remains a point of development for the young midfielder, as this desire often translates into overcommitting to the challenge and conceding an unnecessary foul in opportunistic moments, with Bajčetić recording 1.76 per 90 in the UCL.

But in line with Martínez’s decision to be more resistant to waves of opposition pressure, we saw how Bajčetić could effectively force the Girona ball carrier towards his teammate by quickly enclosing the space and denying that opportunity to progress forward.

LaLiga 24/25: Winter Transfers- scouting report tactics

Conclusion

Whilst there was a distinct lack of big-money moves during the winter transfer window for LaLiga sides, it is apparent that clubs have looked to make smart transfers.

The present players in our analysis can all make an impact in the latter stages of the current campaign, each being offered an opportunity to bolster their public perception and hit the ground running in a new tactical system.

With Real Betis and Villarreal challenging those illustrious European qualification places, Las Palmas hopes that the introduction of another energetic midfielder will steer them further away from the daunting relegation zone.
