Jeremie Frimpong Scout Report At Bayer Leverkusen 2024/2025: Xabi Alonso’s Tactics & Transfer Options – Player Analysis

In the 2023/2024 season, Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title.

They took the world by storm by not losing a single game until the UEFA Europa League final that term.

They were that close to an undefeated treble.

During that season, many players from the squad received much-deserved world attention, and Frimpong was one of those players to whom people started paying more attention.

As of writing this, their season has not gone as well as they would’ve thought.

They lost to Bayern Munich in the Uefa Champions League Round of 16 without putting up much of a fight, losing 5-0 on aggregate.

They now sit at 56 points in second place, while Bayern Munich are on 62 points.

They still have a chance for the title, and Frimpong still plays an important role, but it looks like he may be leaving this summer.

This Jeremie Frimpong scouting report will examine his game, where he plays in the system under Xabi Alonso, possible clubs he could fit into, and his strengths.

Jeremie Frimpong Style Of Play & Role

Jeremie Frimpong is an explosive, attack-minded right wing-back who thrives in Bayer Leverkusen’s dynamic system under Xabi Alonso.

His standout qualities are his acceleration, constant vertical runs, and the ability to overload the right flank.

Frimpong excels in 1v1 situations, often dribbling past defenders and delivering dangerous low crosses.

Defensively, he uses his speed to recover quickly, though his strength lies more in transitional play.

In Leverkusen’s 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 setup, he operates almost as a right winger, maintaining width, making aggressive overlapping runs, and contributing to quick counterattacks with smart positioning and passing combinations.

Due to his size—standing at 1.71 m—he’s a bit small on the defensive side.

Therefore, he’s used more as an attacking wing-back rather than a defensive one to cover the liability of facing bigger attackers.

Jeremie Frimpong Radar Map

Jeremie Frimpong’s radar map showcases his profile as an attacking right wing-back with great offensive contributions and dynamic ball progression.

His attacking metrics stand out significantly.

Frimpong excels in dribbles per 90 (89.7 percentile) and opponent penalty area touches per 90 (96.5 percentile).

His shots per 90 (87.5 percentile) show his goal threat, while his expected goal contribution per 90 (81.75 percentile) highlights his reliability in creating or scoring chances.

In possession, Frimpong demonstrates solid involvement but definitely needs some improvement.

His progressive passes per 90 (42.55 percentile) and dangerous passes per 90 (55.63 percentile) suggest he contributes to advancing the ball and creating opportunities.

Still, these metrics leave room for improvement compared to his attacking output.

His passing accuracy (43.1 percentile) is relatively low, which could be an area to work on for better ball retention.

Defensively, Frimpong’s contributions are lower than the average wing-back.

His defensive duels won percentage (48.8 percentile) and aerial duels won percentage (55.6 percentile) indicate average effectiveness in challenges, while his defensive duels per 90 (9.0 percentile) reflect limited defensive involvement overall.

Overall, Frimpong’s radar map portrays him as an attack-oriented wing-back who thrives in high-risk, high-reward situations.

This makes him a key offensive weapon but with room for growth in defensive reliability.

Jeremie Frimpong Attacking Movement

Frimpong is essentially a right winger in this system with how high up he plays.

Look at his position in the box here — he makes a run from the first circle into the penalty box.

These are the positions he’s designed to be in under the Xabi Alonso system and where he thrives most.

He makes those quick vertical runs, adding an extra layer to a team’s attack.

Due to his small size, Frimpong is very quick, so even if defenders can see the run he’s making, they can’t stop him.

Once he’s determined to make that vertical run in behind, there’s not much the opposition can do unless the midfielder blocks the pass.

In the first image, Frimpong makes a vertical inverted run; in this second image, he’s making an overlapping run from the outside.

Being able to make different angles in your runs is what makes him such a dangerous attacking threat.

Jeremie Frimpong Offensive Positioning

The right wing-back in the Leverkusen system, Frimpong position is typically wider and higher than the left wing-back.

This is due to the need for balance in attacking and defensive transitions when it comes to defending counters.

Because of this, Frimpong likes to take on players in those wide zones and play crosses (which we will get into later).

But this is the average positioning you can find Frimpong in when in the final third.

Leverkusen like to play a “swing the rock” system, which is essentially a basketball term for passing the ball to the “main man.”

Essentially, they’ll look for the switch across the field to feed their star player.

They quickly transition from the left on the counter or from the build-up on the left to the right just to get Frimpong on the ball to make the magic happen.

Because of this, teams are left out of position when Frimpong gets the “rock” or the ball, and now he’s in lots of green space, ready to take his man on 1v1.

Like the image above, he has two different angles he can take to drive forward; this is how the Leverkusen system benefits him.

Jeremie Frimpong Crossing Ability

Something about Frimpong that stands out as well is his effort to make crosses into dangerous areas.

He averages 4.24 crosses per match, with 0.71 of those going directly into the penalty box.

Let’s analyze his crossing ability; he’s aggressive in wide areas, constantly looking to deliver early balls into dangerous zones.

His delivery is often aimed at low, fast crosses rather than lofted ones, fitting perfectly into Leverkusen’s fast-paced attacking transitions.

The video is an example of his high float crosses, and he looks for the back post.

He has great vision in seeing his teammates’ runs and understanding where they will be positioned.

Jeremie Frimpong Low Float Crosses

In terms of low float crosses, there is a combination of nothing that makes him so dangerous in delivery and execution, so let’s take a look.

In this video above, he delivers the cross into the path of his striker very quickly.

Unfortunately, it’s intercepted, but it’s an example of his vision in looking for the open space.

— Footie Clips (@FootieClips) March 21, 2025

We can break down this clip to see why he can deliver so many crosses.

Due to his acceleration and great dribbling ability, he can make quick movements to throw off his opponent and create that space between him and the defender, which is half of the equation in crosses.

The first half of the equation is creating the opportunity to deliver.

You don’t want the cross blocked from the first player it’s trying to pass by.

He is great at solving that first half of the equation, making space for the delivery.

Of course, nobody can have such a high cross-completion rate because, with so many deliveries, not every one of them will be perfect, but he’s always looking to whip the ball into dangerous places.

Jeremie Frimpong Dribbling Ability

In terms of dribbling ability, he averages 3.13 attacking take-ons per 90 minutes with an average of 160.7 total carrying distance in yards.

He also completes 1.52 carries into the final third and 1.31 into the penalty box.

Due to his relatively small size, he has a low centre of gravity.

He’s great at dribbling in tight spaces and stays calm in pressure scenarios.

He can twist and turn to outmanoeuvre opponents and get out of dangerous areas.

Potentially, he could play as a ball carrier in the right system on the width.

Potential Clubs For Jeremie Frimpong Transfers

One club he’s been heavily linked with is Manchester United, but I think he will be the best fit for Inter Milan.

So, we’ll take a look at both clubs and how he would fit at both places.

Jeremie Frimpong Transfer To Manchester United

Manchester United have been heavily linked with the player, but I don’t think he will be the best fit for their system.

United doesn’t play with such a high wing-back system that Frimpong thrives in.

The counter-attacks aren’t quick enough, and the formation isn’t there yet.

Ruben Amorim likes to play with a back-three, so if Frimpong wants to grow with that system, he can definitely thrive there if the left wing-back is more defensive to balance it out.

It’s a 50/50 situation.

Frimpong is a good player and can fit very well at United, but the other side of the coin is whether United judges his player profile correctly and will use him correctly, which they’ve failed to do with many players in the past.

Jeremie Frimpong Transfer To Inter Milan

I believe he is the best fit for a place like Inter Milan.

They love a wing-back system, have quick counterattacks, and have fast transitions.

In a league like Serie A, Frimpong and his quick pace can destroy players on the attack.

Inter Milan also has great structural defence and some of the best in the world.

He can thrive in a system under Simone Inzaghi, making those attacking runs similar to how Dumfries was thriving a few years ago.

But the team has the balance, so he isn’t relied on too much defensively.

Conclusion

Overall, Frimpong is an amazing attacking wingback.

Due to his size, he struggles on the defensive side, especially when tasked with being higher up the pitch.

Almost playing as a right winger, he plays a crucial role.

There are many rumours about where he could move, with Manchester United being the heavy link.

He is still 24 years old, so very young, and with the potential to grow further in his defensive skills, but he is an extreme threat on attack.
