Formed just over a decade ago from a merger of two modest local sides, Cypriot club Pafos were never expected to trouble Europe’s elite.
What began as a quiet project to consolidate senior football in the touristic Paphos district, harmlessly floating between the top two divisions, quickly became one of the continent’s most surprising ascents.
The 2017 takeover from Total Sports Investments, which allowed them to upgrade coaching, facilities, and recruitment, was seen as pivotal.
Over the next six years, the club stabilised itself as a solid mid-table outfit with little fear of relegation or any real chance of qualifying for the European competitions.
The appointment of Spaniard Juan Carlos Carcedo, in the summer of 2023, altered those fortunes rather dramatically.
With both a Cypriot Cup and First Division title already to his name, Carcedo has written himself into Pafos legend.
This season, the club have pushed the boundaries once more as they remain unbeaten in their seven UEFA Champions League fixtures, across qualifying and the League Phase, thus far.
In this tactical analysis, we aim to examine the defining features of Carcedos playing model.
Quick Pafos Transitions
To begin this Pafos analysis, its essential to note that lightning-quick transitions and counterattacks have been a staple of the teams play in recent seasons.
This has especially been the case in European fixtures, where Pafos are ultimately underdogs, but it’s not limited to those games either.
With aggressive pressing triggers to force turnovers high up the pitch, quick vertical play through wide forwards like Jajá and Anderson Silva, and a strong ball-winner in midfield in Ivan Sunjic, Pafos have all the necessary tools to be deadly on the break.
Carcedos set-piece structure is aggressive: multiple attackers are stationed high, ready to counterpress and recover as soon as the ball is cleared from the box.
Even after being reduced to 10 men at Olympiacos, Pafos had three men deployed well outside the penalty area on an opposition corner.
The gamble pays off as Jajá pounces on a loose ball in midfield from the resulting clearance.
