Ezechiel Banzuzi Scout Report At OH Leuven 2024/2025: RB Leipzig’s Young Yaya Touré – Player Analysis

If there’s one player who’s really stood out as a defensive midfielder in the Belgian Pro League this season, it’s 20-year-old Ezechiel Banzuzi.

The OH Leuven star has had an incredible 2024/2025 campaign, and his performances have earned him a move to RB Leipzig, set to go through in the summer of 2025.

While Banzuzi has mostly played as a central midfielder, his ability to fill in more advanced roles has really showcased his versatility and tactical awareness.

Across all competitions, he’s made 33 appearances, scoring three goals and providing six assists.

He constantly influences both sides of the game and becomes a key player in Leuven’s midfield setup.

Developed at NAC Breda, Banzuzi combines athleticism with sharp vision.

He drives play forward with intelligent ball progression and makes smart runs into space.

His work rate, maturity, and adaptability have made him one of the most exciting U21 midfielders in the Belgian Pro League.

In this scout report and tactical analysis, we’ll dive into what makes Banzuzi such a standout talent and why he’s set to become one of the top exports from the Belgian Pro League.

Who Is Ezechiel Banzuzi?

A 20-year-old midfielder, Banzuzi currently plays for OH Leuven, pending a summer move to RB Leipzig, and the Dutch U21 National Team.

Banzuzi’s radar map gives a good snapshot of his current state: raw but really exciting.

He’s still refining parts of his possession game — things like progressive passes (54.7 percentile) and dangerous passes (45.1 percentile) aren’t standout yet — but that’s not unusual for a young midfielder just starting to find his rhythm at the senior level, he will show some inconsistencies from time to time.

Where he really shines is in the attacking side of the game.

His dribbles per 90 (89.9 percentile) and touches in the opposition box (92.9 percentile) are excellent, showing how often he gets involved in dangerous areas.

He’s also putting up good numbers for shots per 90 (85.3 percentile), and his goal contributions line up well with the chances he’s creating (around the 73rd percentile for both actual and expected).

Defensively, Banzuzi holds his own, too.

He’s winning a high percentage of his aerial duels (88.0 percentile) and defensive duels (83.7 percentile), which shows he’s more than capable of handling the physical side of midfield battles.

Overall, the profile points to a young midfielder with a lot of upside: aggressive, active in the final third, and tough in duels.

If he keeps improving on the ball, especially his passing, he could grow into a really complete player in the next couple of years.

Suppose I had to use a player model on him.

In that case, I’d describe Banzuzi as a “young, lighter Yaya Touré” in style, with driving runs and offensive energy.

However, the Ivorian could excel in areas like tempo control and decision-making under pressure, where Banzuzi still needs polishing.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Strengths

Banzuzi excels at advancing the ball under pressure, driving past opponents with powerful, dynamic runs into open spaces.

His ability to pick up possession and carry it forward with intent adds a direct edge to his team’s transitions and build-up play.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Progressive Carrying

Much like Moussa Sissoko in his prime, Banzuzi isn’t just a link player—he drives through midfield lines with physicality and purpose, offering a more forceful profile than a traditional central midfielder.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Line-Breaking Passing

Beyond his ability to carry the ball, Banzuzi also shows Paul Pogba-like flashes — the ability to spot and execute passes others simply don’t see.

He has the technique to break lines with sharp, vertical deliveries, whether it’s a quick ground ball to progress play or a more ambitious pass into the final third.

His range and confidence on the ball allow him to consistently connect midfield to attack, adding another layer of creativity to his game.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Pace

For a player standing at 191 cm, Banzuzi moves with impressive speed and agility.

He uses his burst of acceleration effectively on both sides of the ball, driving into open spaces in attack and recovering ground quickly to press or track back defensively.

His ability to cover ground at pace, especially given his size, adds an extra layer of dynamism to his game and makes him a difficult player to contain in transitional moments.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Technical Ability

His first touch in tight spaces, ball control, and composure in tight spaces are refined for his age.

He is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, and his ability to maintain control while at full speed is a real standout trait.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Movement

Banzuzi shows an excellent understanding of space.

He constantly scans the pitch and knows exactly when and where to make his runs.

He frequently drives forward from deep areas to support attacks or create overloads, always timing his movement into open spaces to maximum effect.

His late arrivals into the final third add a layer of unpredictability to his already dynamic profile.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Heading & Aerial Presence

Standing at 191 cm, Banzuzi naturally imposes himself in aerial duels across both penalty areas.

His physical profile, combined with good timing and high IQ, makes him highly effective when contesting crosses and defending set-pieces.

Offensively, he offers a real threat when attacking the box, often positioning himself well to meet deliveries into the box.

His natural size advantage, paired with an aggressive demeanour when attacking the ball, consistently gives his team an edge in aerial battles on both ends of the pitch.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Physicality

Banzuzi’s physical presence in midfield stands out immediately.

Strong, powerful, and aggressive, he regularly outmuscles opponents in duels, using his frame to shield the ball and dominate 1v1 battles.

His strength helps him maintain possession and allows him to impose himself across all areas of the pitch.

In the example below, you can see him shrugging off a defender with ease, driving diagonally into the box, and setting up a clear chance on goal that’s being executed nicely.

This is a perfect example of how he uses his physical tools to directly impact attacking sequences.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Goal Threat

Banzuzi shows technical quality and intelligent positioning in the final third.

His timing and movement in the box create frequent opportunities, making him a consistent threat from midfield.

However, while his positioning is often excellent, his final execution, particularly in finishing and decision-making under pressure, could be more consistent to maximize his impact as a difference-maker fully.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Weaknesses

Although this profile offers reliable control in deeper and middle thirds, there remains significant room for development in his attacking output and consistency.

He tends to play cautiously when operating in more advanced midfield roles, limiting his impact on key passes, chance creation, and final third entries.

To maximise his potential, he must adopt a more proactive approach in possession, take greater risks in advanced areas, and increase his influence on attacking phases.

Increasing his decisiveness in the final third through more accurate passing, risk-taking near the box, and improved shot selection would add a new dimension to his skill set.

Additionally, improving his ability to arrive in scoring positions more consistently would enhance his threat level and overall impact in attacking phases.

However, some progress in this area has already been noted.

Ezechiel Banzuzi Best Position

In our view, Banzuzi’s role would be most effective as a box-to-box midfielder in a 4-3-3, capable of operating in advanced areas or as a roaming midfielder in a 4-2-3-1.

His physicality and ability to cover ground make him an excellent fit for systems focused on rapid transitions and midfield dominance.

Banzuzi could also thrive in a more advanced central role in a 4-4-2 diamond, where his late runs into the box and box-to-box presence would be fully maximised, especially if his finishing improves.

His versatility means he could comfortably fill either role.

Initially, he seems best suited to playing alongside a more defensive-minded partner to help manage transitions.

Still, his well-rounded skill set suggests he is adaptable enough to operate effectively in both attacking and more balanced midfield roles.

Conclusion

Looking ahead, it’s clear that Banzuzi has the tools to eventually play at a very high level and potentially a starter for his home country, but a move to a top-five European club might come too early right now.

Many clubs make the mistake of signing young talents after one or two strong seasons, expecting them to adapt and deliver immediately.

This isn’t realistic for most players who are still refining their game, especially young, talented guys from less-pressured environments.

For Banzuzi, the move to RB Leipzig feels like a good next step, a club that gives young players time to develop while still keeping the environment competitive enough that nothing is handed to them.

He’s at a stage where getting consistent minutes without the immediate pressure of being a guaranteed starter will be key to unlocking the next phase of his game.

If he settles in and sharpens his decision-making in the final third, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him ready for an even bigger move in a couple of years.

Timing will be everything to maximise his potential.

With a new manager set to arrive this summer, Leipzig’s midfield is about to get even more interesting—a positive headache given the amount of young talent at the club.

However, a few faces will likely move on in search of bigger contracts elsewhere.
