The 2024/25 EFL Championship season is nearing its conclusion, and fans have been treated to some thrilling action and stunning displays of football talent so far.
But among the wave of hopes and dreams for cup victory and Premier League promotion, for some clubs, the real battle is simply to avoid relegation.
With just four matches remaining (as of April 15, 2025), the bottom of the table is tightly contested, and the fight to escape relegation will intensify over Easter weekend.
Let’s take a closer look at the several clubs fighting to secure their place in the league for next season, and how certain matches might alter the standings – along with the Championship relegation odds.
The Relegation Battle
The current standings at the bottom end of the Championship table are as follows:
- 19th: Portsmouth – 42 points
- 20th: Hull City – 42 points
- 21st: Derby County – 42 points
Relegation zone:
- 22nd: Cardiff City – 42 points
- 23rd: Luton Town – 40 points
- 24th: Plymouth Argyle – 40 points
At the bottom of the table is Plymouth Argyle, with only 9 wins, 20 losses, and a goal difference of -38. Luton Town matches their points, but with a goal difference of -26, and they each sit three points from safety.
Cardiff City is the third club currently sitting in the relegation zone, although there’s only one point in it if they’re vying for safety.
Derby County, Hull City, Portsmouth, Stoke City, and Oxford United are all teams within six points of the relegation zone, so every match going forward will be pivotal in deciding the fate of each team.
- Cardiff City
Cardiff City’s recent form has been concerning, with only nine wins in 42 matches.
Their upcoming fixtures include challenging matches against Sheffield United and Oxford United, so it remains to be seen whether they can narrowly avoid relegation.
- Luton Town
Luton Town, currently in 23rd place, also face a tough schedule ahead, playing against Derby County and Bristol City.
These pivotal matches could determine their fate in the league, so it’s important that they find form in these late stages of the season.
- Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth Argyle sit at the bottom of the table, and they’ve got a challenging run-in.
Their remaining fixtures include matchups against Middlesbrough and Coventry City, and anything short of the full three points in these games could solidify their drop down to League One when the season concludes.
The Top Of The Table
At the other end of the table, Leeds United and Burnley are leading the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League, both with 88 points. Sheffield United is closely behind, with 83 points.
Leeds United recently secured a vital 2-1 win over Preston North End on April 12, a victory that has bolstered their chances of returning to the Premier League.
The upcoming fixtures over the Easter period are set to be decisive for both ends of the table, making a huge impact on Championship betting.
Promotion and relegation are on the horizon for several clubs, so for fans, this means we can expect four dramatic matches for each team, where they will hopefully give their all.
