All three promoted teams from the EFL Championship last season — Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town — are at risk of going down immediately this season. One has to go back a long time — to 1997/98 — for the last time all three promoted teams immediately went down, but the teams relegated from the Premier League often bounce back.
The below visualisation shows the points tally of teams promoted from the Championship to the Premier League every season since 2014/15.
Over the past nine seasons, starting in 2014/15, a total of 21 different teams have faced relegation from the Premier League. Among them, Norwich City and Burnley have experienced the most relegations, with three each. Other teams, such as Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town, Middlesbrough, QPR, Stoke City, Sunderland, and Swansea City, have also been relegated in the past 10 seasons, but are yet to make a return to the Premier League.
Burnley were relegated in 2015 and earned promotion back to the top flight the following season, similar to Hull City. Newcastle United, who were relegated in 2016, were promoted to the Premier League the following season after finishing first in the 2016/17 Championship campaign.
Meanwhile, Fulham, who were relegated in 2019, secured promotion the following season, similar to Norwich City — relegated in 2019/20 but securing promotion back in 2020/21. Fulham repeated their heroics from 2020 in the Championship once again in 2022, securing promotion immediately. 2016/17 and 2017/18 were the only seasons in the last 10 years when all of the relegated teams failed to get promoted the following season.
At least one of the relegated teams almost quite often gets promoted immediately. This season is set to follow a similar trend with Leeds United, Leicester City and Southampton, relegated last season, remaining in contention to get promoted this year.
