2020 is a year that has impacted football club finances in a way many teams would not have been able to predict or foresee coming. Indeed, there are many teams who have struggled, whilst some will unlikely be able to be active in the upcoming transfer window.
Those who will be able to be active will likely be more prudent than ever before, whilst others will do a lot more due diligence before making a move. Bettors will already know this process well, though, as they are careful when they look for the UK’s best sports betting sites available on the internet.
However, there have been some rather unique transfers to have happened that have not necessarily featured any money when a deal has been concluded.
Here are just some of the strangest transfers to have taken place, with thanks to GIVEMESPORT:
Zat Knight
Zat Knight managed to complete a move to Fulham from Rushall Olympic, however it was not for money. Instead, Fulham provided Rushall Olympic with 30 new tracksuits for their defender, who actually went on to play for England as well!
Ernie Blenkinsop
In the 1920s, Ernie Blenkinsop swapped Hudworth for Hull City for £100 and a barrel of beer. These payment terms do not sound out of place for a sitcom with a bad title.
Gary Pallister
A former Manchester United and England international, Gary Pallister left Billingham to join Middlesbrough for a set of kit, a bag of balls and a goal net.
John Barnes
Another former England international that managed to cost a side literally nothing at all. Watford signed John Barnes from Sudbury Court for the princely sum of a set of football kits.
Daniel Allende
Ever thought of paying for something in instalments by using steaks as a form of payment? Rentistas of Uruguay decided they could when they signed Daniel Allende from Central Espanol. Rentistas forked out a whopping 550 steaks to sign him, having split it into payments of 25 steaks a week.
Ian Wright
An Arsenal legend and another former England international, Ian Wright moved to Crystal Palace for a set of weights from Greenwich Borough. Imagine being able to get a striker as prolific as he was for a set of weights?! I’m sure many clubs would be searching all good gym-equipment stores for them if they could now.
Collins John
Collins John might be a name familiar to some for his time at Fulham, however it was prior to his move to England that saw him fetch a weird transfer fee. As a 17-year-old, FC Twente provided DES Nijverdal with a set of encyclopedias and other learning materials to a school in the local region to bring the player to their club.
