Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris announces legal action against Jamie Carragher

Aston Villa have gone on the offensive against Jamie Carragher. In a short statement published on the club’s official X account late on Friday night and signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, Villa said they will pursue legal action against the Sky Sports pundit over remarks he made about the club and its supporters on a podcast.

“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans,” the statement read. “Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.”

The club offered nothing beyond those two sentences, so it is not yet known what form the action will take or on what grounds it will be brought.

What Carragher said

The row began on the Stick to Football podcast, where the former Liverpool defender floated the idea that Unai Emery would be tempted by the Manchester United job. Michael Carrick is under growing pressure at Old Trafford after a poor start to the season, and Carragher argued that a club of United’s size sits above Villa in the game’s pecking order.

“There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not,” he said, according to BBC Sport. “So Real Madrid will take Manchester United’s best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo.”

He then turned on the Villa fanbase directly. As reported by the Guardian, the 48-year-old told supporters to “shut the fuck up” and added: “Aston Villa will never be Man United.”

“It was a joke”

Carragher, who also works as a pundit for the American broadcaster CBS, has also addressed the backlash over his comments. Writing on social media, he described the outburst as “a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd”.

He also pointed to his past praise of the Spanish coach and the club, saying he hoped the clips in circulation would also show him “saying how pleased I was you won [the 2026 Europa League] in Istanbul.”

Speaking on the Overlap Daily, Carragher acknowledged he had gone too far with his language. “I ended up telling them to [expletive] which maybe I shouldn’t have done but it was all in jest because they’ve been all over my social timeline,” he said, in comments carried by the BBC. He also described Emery as “the best manager in the league”.

Why Villa have reacted so strongly

The wording of Sawiris’s statement is telling. By framing the dispute around the club’s “ascension”, Villa have tied a pundit’s podcast remark to their wider ambitions under Emery, the coach who, as Carragher himself pointed out, delivered a Europa League title in Istanbul.

The announcement also came from the very top of the club rather than from a spokesperson, with Sawiris putting his own name to it. On the pitch, Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park last weekend, and supporters were quick to bristle at the idea that their manager might be tempted away.

There had been no reported response from Carragher to the club’s statement by Saturday morning. For a look at how Villa were set up earlier in the year, see our tactical analysis of Manchester United against Aston Villa.
