Ligue 1 21/22: Which forwards are good at finding the back of the net (so far)?

The 2021/22 Ligue 1 season is up and running. At the time of writing, most teams have played five games in the current season and PSG are the only team with a 100% record winning all their five games so far. Defending champions Lille have won just one game, at the time of writing, and Brest, Saint-Étienne, Metz and Bordeaux are the teams without a single win to their name. Now is a good time to start looking at which players are putting up good numbers across different metrics.

The following visualisation shows the top 15 players with the best goal conversion rates in the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season so far. Only players who had played in the attacking forward positions and played at least 150 minutes and attempted at least five shots in the league so far were considered for this analysis.

Kylian Mbappé, who is currently the competition’s top scorer with five goals, has attempted the most shots. However, the forward ranks 10th for goal conversion with only 24% of his shots finding the back of the net. OGC Nice have started the season well, and one reason for this is their forward Kasper Dolberg. The former Ajax man has scored three goals from six shots and has the best shot-to-goal conversion rate in the league. Behind Dolberg is his teammate Amine Gouiri. The 21-year-old French player has scored four goals in only nine attempts on goal. Mauro Icardi comes third with a goal conversion rate of 33% and two goals to his name. Other interesting names in the top 15 for players with the goal conversion rate include Marseille’s Cengiz Ünder and Dimitri Payet as well as Lyon’s Moussa Dembélé and Jonathan David.
