James Trafford at Manchester City 20252026

Manchester City are reported to be closing in on the signing of English goalkeeper James Trafford.

Trafford would arrive from Premier League newcomers Burnley, who signed the goalkeeper themselves from Manchester City in 2023.

This move further signals the start of a new era for Pep Guardiola, who, along with Hugo Viana, has conducted a genuine squad overhaul over the last year.

Trafford thrived in the EFL Championship and gained constant plaudits after a record-breaking season as the Clarets‘ number one.

However, is the 22-year-old Northerner ready to take over from Man City cult-hero Ederson, or is the move slightly premature from the former champions?

This article will conduct a thorough player analysis and scout report on James Trafford, analysing his strengths and areas for improvement to perform at the top level.

We will consider how James Trafford style of play may differ from Ederson and what new attributes he may bring to the club.

James Trafford Style Of Play

James Trafford is 6’5 in height but has a relatively lean build for a goalkeeper.

He is impressive physically, offering the dominance expected at his height, while also possessing great flexibility and athleticism that enable his shot-stopping.

He has developed his physical side of his game, in particular, through loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers in the EFL, where strong duels and aerial battles are regular challenges.

Overall, he should be desired as a modern keeper, as he is very comfortable with the ball at his feet.

This could largely be attributed to his time at the youth level, where he featured for both England youth and Manchester City’s elite academy.

Both of these set-ups are heavily focused on possession-based football and demand that it start from the back with the goalkeepers.

James Trafford Stats 2024/2025

James Trafford’s 2024/2025 season was truly special and will stand out as an all-timer defensive season, particularly in the EFL.

Just how good is James Trafford?

Burnley went through all 46 games, conceding just 16 goals.

This is a ridiculous 0.35 goals per game.

During this period, they collected 30 clean sheets and went 12 games without conceding a single goal from December 2024 to March 2025.

In the history of English football, only Manchester United have bettered this.

Trafford conceded 16 goals from 28.6 xG, making these numbers even more outstanding, as they overperformed by over 12 goals.

Great defensive statistics are usually expected of low-block teams, which, impressively again, Burnley did not.

Burnley averaged 56.9% possession and were the second-highest goal scorers in the league after Leeds United.

Therefore, they conceded chances, and Trafford was a massive contributor, if not the main one, to their incredible season at the back.

James Trafford Pizza Chart

Above, we have a pizza chart highlighting James Trafford’s performance for Burnley in the 2024/2025 season in several key metrics, when compared with other stoppers from the EFL Championship and similarly ranked leagues, in terms of level, according to Total Football Analysis‘ in-house league-ranking system.

The GK metrics immediately stand out, placing James Trafford head and shoulders above his peers.

In the same vein, Trafford’s distribution metrics are solid, placing him in the top-15% for passes per 90 and received passes per 90, as well as in the 78th percentile for pass accuracy %.

James Trafford Strengths

Spectacular Shot-Stopping

After reading the above statistics, you will be unsurprised to hear that James Trafford is a highly accomplished shot stopper.

He has very quick reactions, combined with a solid understanding of the game, which enables him to position himself correctly to capitalise on any prevailing opportunities.

Additionally, he possesses the athleticism to move quickly and execute his movements effectively to prevent goals.

As shown below, Trafford positions himself effectively in both situations before the opportunity develops.

Once the chance does appear, his reactions are extremely impressive, allowing him to save efforts where many other keepers would be left flat-footed and hopeless.

He is also an excellent long-range shot stopper, using his agility to prevent distance shooters, as shown below.

In these situations, he uses his reactions and shows great strength in his hands.

This allows him to steer the ball behind the goal and not parry into dangerous zones in front of him.

Passing Range

Additionally, Trafford is a confident and creative passer of the ball.

Scott Parker, much like Pep, looks to build out from the back, and Trafford was tasked with contributing a lot in early build-up.

The image below shows the type of position he would take, moving between the centre-halves to provide another option and essentially create an overload in the first build-up phase.

This creates many scenarios where he is pressed and in high-risk areas, but he rarely panics.

Instead, Trafford has the technical ability to keep close control of the ball before assessing his options and making a careful pass, either to his full-backs or centre-halves.

James Trafford Confidence

James Trafford exudes composure and self-assurance, which he regularly translates into his on-field displays.

Trafford shows his confidence in numerous ways, whether by commanding his teammates or by antagonising the opposition in an attempt to encourage mistakes.

As shown above, he is a constant communicator, commanding his defenders on where to move before making his pass.

He also shows this commanding ability in defensive scenarios, dictating his defence at set pieces throughout.

James Trafford Weaknesses

Conservative Positioning

Whilst Trafford is physical and can dominate in the air, he sometimes lacks the enthusiasm to claim crosses and takes the more conservative option of staying on his goal line.

Particularly with crosses played along the floor, Trafford can look to stay back, which allows forwards to collect and convert from within the six-yard box.

The images below show a situation against Millwall this season.

A low ball was played across the six-yard box, and the defenders expected him to collect, as did many fans.

Instead, he hesitated.

This allowed the forward to sneak in and resulted in a goal.

These crossing situations often catch him out, and he regularly sticks to the goal-line when he could collect.

At Manchester City, he will have to learn to be more aggressive or else the best forwards will punish him.

Top-Level Experience

Another more obvious concern regarding James Trafford is his inexperience and lack of success at the top level.

Trafford’s only season in the Premier League was during Burnley’s relegation campaign, during which he and the rest of the squad massively underperformed expectations.

Burnley finished 19th that year, conceding 78 goals in the 38 games played.

This certainly can’t be placed solely as his responsibility, as Burnley were underprepared and lacked enough quality to survive.

However, he did not cover himself in glory, and he was not ready for the pressures or expectations placed upon him.

These pressures will intensify significantly next season, and how he responds to them will be crucial to the club’s success.

James Trafford Fit For Manchester City 2025/2026

As we have all witnessed over the past nine years, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are dominant.

They aim to maintain possession at all times and strive to dominate whenever possible.

A considerable part of this has stemmed from the current goalkeeper, Ederson.

Ederson is not a world-class goalkeeper with his hands and has been scrutinised many times for his goal-prevention capabilities.

However, with his feet, no goalkeeper in world football can touch him.

He regularly engages in high-risk zones, even more so than Trafford, and it would be a considerable risk to ask the 22-year-old to do the same next year.

Trafford is very good with his feet, but still does not come close to Ederson’s range of passing.

City will have to adjust, and I would expect Pep to place less emphasis on risk-taking passes from his keeper.

He will still expect Trafford to contribute to the build-up, just via safer but still progressive channels.

On the other hand, Trafford has the potential to be a much better shot-stopper and may help the club keep more clean sheets.

Trafford managed an 84.6% save percentage last season, and overachieved his xG by 12.6

Ederson’s save percentage was 67.5%, and he overachieved his xG by just 4.4.

Conclusion

James Trafford is an extremely exciting English prospect and potentially the country’s future number one.

At such a young age, he already has impressive credentials and will not arrive at the Etihad as the inexperienced boy he was upon leaving.

His shot-stopping is brilliant, his mentality is top-notch, and his ability to participate in the modern aspects of goalkeeping impresses spectators even further.

Nevertheless, his top-level experience is minimal.

How he copes with transitioning from the Championship to the Champions League will determine his short-term success.

He will need to quickly come to terms with Mo Salah and Alexander Isak running at him.

If he does this, the future seems only bright for James Trafford transfer to Manchester City.
