Transfer season is fully in the swing of things and with weeks of the window still to go, movements are still likely going to happen.
Of course, the transfer window represents a really good opportunity for clubs to be able to make additions and improvements to their squad. Another reason the transfer window is welcomed is for bettors, as new recruits can make for better odds on certain markets in the future at places such as BetNow Sportsbook.
However, doing so has gotten rather expensive recently. A number of clubs have been able to make the most of the financial backing that they have been fortunate to receive, however other clubs have been priced out of potential switches as clubs start to become a little greedier and demand more money than once was ever believed imaginable.
So, which Premier League teams have spent the most money since 2000?
Liverpool – €1.48 billion
Liverpool may have only managed to win their first top-flight title in the 2019/20, however they have been spending big to try and make that long-awaited success happen a little sooner than it actually did. Huge transfer fees followed the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Allison Becker and Naby Keita recently, although there were the likes of Andy Carroll and Christian Benteke all setting the Anfield outfit back over €30m each.
Manchester United – €1.78 billion
Manchester United have spent approximately around €300m more than their fierce north-west rivals, Liverpool over the same two-decade period. Of course, Manchester United splashed big on players like Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy in the early part of the 2000s, however they have seen their spending grow exponentially since the 2010s.
United bought Paul Pogba for £94.5 million, Harry Maguire for £78.3 million, Romelu Lukaku for £76.23 million, Angel Di Maria for £67.5 million, Anthony Martial for £54 million, Fred for £53.2 million and Bruno Fernandes for £49.5 million. Let’s not forget the big fee they have just shelled out for Ajax’s Donny van de Beek as well.
Manchester City – €2.05 billion
Manchester City have had some mega-billionaire owners since 2008 and have quickly gone about their way in establishing a side full of superstars and ability to win all the competitions that they are involved in.
Pep Guardiola, of course, has spent the vast majority of that money on his squad. Kevin De Bruyne is the current record-holder for Manchester City as their most expensive signing, standing at £68.4 million. Rodri (£63 million), Riyad Mahrez (£61.02 million), Joao Cancelo (£58.5 million), Aymeric Laporte (£58.5 million), Raheem Sterling (£57.33 million), Benjamin Mendy (£51.75 million) and John Stones (£50.04 million) also all account for the vast majority of that €2.05 billion being spent.
Chelsea – €2.16 billion
Chelsea’s €2.16 billion expenditure since 2000 on transfers is not just the highest in the Premier League, but it is the most to have been spent on players in the world; beating the likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Of course, Roman Abramovich arrived with a war chest of riches and set about providing unlimited funds to turn Chelsea into the force he wants them to be. Recent transfer fees have certainly catapulted them to the €2.16 billion-mark, with deals for Kai Havertz and Kepa Arrizabalaga (both £72 million) both adding other £140m to the total.
Alvaro Morata (£59.4 million), Christian Pulisic (£57.60 million), Fernando Torres (£52.65 million) and Jorginho (£51.3 million) round off the list of above £50m, although Timo Werner was not far from that fee, either.
