The 2024/25 Premier League campaign has been a tough season for Wolverhampton Wanderers, but amidst some dark days for the club, Matheus Cunha has been the shining light for the West Midlands outfit.
Wolves still have work to do to avoid a shock drop down to the Championship, but if they are to finish the season above the bottom three, Cunha will have played a significant role.
Cunha Showing True Potential
After a difficult spell at Atlético Madrid, Cunha has been able to show his true colours since making the move to Molineux permanently.
Cunha has scored goals against some of the top clubs in the top flight this season, including against a Liverpool side who are 1/50 favourites in the Premier League winner odds to lift the trophy this term.
Wolves, who are 22/1 in the Premier League relegation odds, have real talent, with the South American forward scoring 13 goals in his first 26 league appearances this term.
A player capable of taking games by the scruff of the neck, Cunha is a big reason why Wolves are on course to avoid the drop this season.
Cunha is another player who has shone during his time in the West Midlands, landing the likes of Portuguese duo Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto in the past.
Keeping Cunha Will Be a Challenge
Given his attributes in the final third and his ability have a huge impact at Premier League level, Wolves’ resolve to keep Cunha at Molineux beyond this summer will be challenged.
Much like when stars Jota and Neto were plying their trades at Wolves, interest quickly grew in the pair, who eventually went on to join Liverpool and Chelsea, respectively.
There will likely be plenty of interest this summer in Cunha, but Wolves do find themselves in a strong position. The Brazil international is contracted to the club until 2029.
Wanderers finished 14th in the Premier League last season and are set to finish below that spot this term.
Strong summer recruitment and stability in the manager’s office should certainly help keep Cunha at Wolves for the foreseeable future.
Cunha has become the latest in a long list of players who have shone at Wolverhampton Wanderers. His brilliant footwork and eye for goal have delighted the faithful fans at Molineux this season.
Great players will attract big teams, and now the challenge for the hierarchy at Wolves will be to make sure Cunha continues to dazzle supporters at Molineux for years to come.
