If you thought that Cristiano Ronaldo had already ‘completed’ football, you would be wrong as the UEFA European Championships will provide the superstar with an opportunity to obtain even more records for himself within the game we all love.
Of course, CR7 is one of the best players the world of football has ever seen, however he seems to be a player that has been going under the radar in regards to the current UEFA 2020 European Championships, with the likes of Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Kylian Mbappe all fancied to score more goals than him.
Naturally, the fact that Portugal are involved in the Group of Death this summer alongside France, Germany and Hungary, it could be hard to see Ronaldo score a boatload, but those that use that are looking at Euro 2020 betting options will know not to write him off, especially as he still managed to bag 36 goals for Juventus last season.
Portugal are the current defending champions and CR7 will want to go out and defend his crown as well as he possibly can, although whilst doing that, he can also look to acquire some individual records for himself as long as his country are competing in the competition, as highlighted by GiveMeSport.
One of the records he will be looking to go for is to try and equal and better the record number of goals scored at the international level by a single player. Iran’s Ali Daei holds the record with 109 goals in 149 games, but Ronaldo is just five short of equalling that after netting in his country’s friendly win against Israel.
However, there will be some concern about whether he will be able to achieve that record, as the group he is in has the aforementioned sides involved, whilst he has failed to score more than three goals in a single Euro Championships competition.
However, five other records can be obtained throughout the competition, with him being needed to win just one more Euro match to surpass Spanish duo, Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta’s 11 wins, whilst one more goal will take him to 10 and surpass Michel Platini’s 9 with whom he currently shares the record.
He also holds a joint record for the most matches with at least two goals, whilst he shares a record with Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the most tournaments with at least two goals on three. He has two final appearances to his name, as well, with no player ever having appeared in three European Championship finals.
If he were not able to obtain any of the aforementioned records, his overall legacy within the tournament will already be of sound standing, as Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to achieve four of his own already.
Those records include the following:
Most matches played: 21
Most minutes played: 1,793
Most matches with at least one goal: 7
Most tournaments with at least one goal: 4
With Hungary being the first match to be played, though, in the 2020 UEFA European Championships, Ronaldo might just have the perfect chance to get his and the nation’s title defence off in the ideal way, as well as his own pursuit for a number of different records.
