Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 in the Premier League on Monday night, only four days after beating the same opponents 3-1 in the League Cup. David Moyes’s side have now won both meetings between the clubs inside a week, and Newcastle have lost two in a row.
The first half at St James’ Park ended goalless. Its only notable incident was a yellow card for Dan Burn, booked for a foul in the 32nd minute.
Barry’s 49th-minute goal survives a VAR check
The breakthrough came four minutes after the restart. Barry found the net in the 49th minute, and a VAR review two minutes later confirmed the goal. The Everton forward was rated 7.98, the highest on the pitch, after a performance that brought 3 shots and 2 key passes before he made way after 80 minutes.
Tyrique George was cautioned for dissent in the 52nd minute. Moyes himself went into the book for the same offence in the 73rd.
Newcastle had more of the ball, with 52% possession, and edged the passing count 428 to 396. They also took 17 shots to Everton’s 16. The quality of those chances told a different story. Ten of the home side’s attempts came from outside the box, only 2 hit the target, and their expected goals figure was 1.33 against Everton’s 2.36.
Everton tested the Newcastle goalkeeper more often, with 5 shots on target. Horníček made 4 saves to keep the margin at one. Jarrad Branthwaite was rated 7.31, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall created 3 chances.
Ramsey dismissed deep in stoppage time
The finish was ill-tempered. Jacob Ramsey was booked for a foul in the sixth minute of stoppage time and shown a red card two minutes later. Fabian Schär and Everton’s Brennan Johnson were then both cautioned after an argument in the ninth minute of added time. John Brooks blew for full time with Newcastle down to ten.
Everton seventh, Newcastle 13th after Monday’s result
The win leaves Everton seventh on 13 points from 9 games, one point behind sixth-placed Brentford. Newcastle are 13th with 11 points and a goal difference of -3.
The head-to-head record has swung firmly towards Merseyside. Everton have won four of the last five meetings, including a 1-0 victory on this ground on 25 May 2025. Newcastle’s only success in that run was a 4-1 win at Everton in November 2025.
Neither side waits long for the next game. Everton host Coventry on Friday 6 November, while Newcastle travel to Fulham on Saturday 7 November.
