The USMNT managed to overcome fierce rivals, Mexico, as they managed to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the seventh time in their history.
The game went all the way to extra time as 90 minutes could not provide either team with a breakthrough as the match remained scoreless.
However, Miles Robinson popped up with the only goal of the game just minutes from the contest going to a penalty shoot-out, when he headed home in Las Vegas to provide the country with their first win since the 2017 edition, as they had finished 2019 as runners-up; where they lost to Mexico.
Gregg Berhalter admitted after the game that he wanted the result badly for his players as he had a relatively young squad that was not expected to be able to lift the trophy prior to the competition starting, especially with players such as Christian Pulisic opting to remain at Chelsea.
However, the USMNT managed to do exactly what they needed to do in the entire CONCACAF Gold Cup competition, as they managed to put up a solid wall and take just one of the opportunities that they required.
Apart from their second match of the entire tournament where they defeated Martinique 6-1, five of their six matches played each ended 1-0.
They started off their tournament with a 1-0 win against Haiti, before going on a run of four 1-0 victories as Berhalter’s side lifted the title. Canada, Jamaica, Qatar and Mexico all stood in their way, but the USMNT managed to overcome them by remaining resilient and taking at least one of the chances that were created and handed to them.
Furthermore, to highlight just how well the team had managed to do during the competition, each of the goals scored in the knockout games against Jamaica, Qatar and Mexico were scored during the final ten minutes of the game.
Matthew Hoppe netted the winner against Jamaica after 83′ minutes, whilst Gyasi Zardes scored the only goal against Qatar with just four minutes left on the clock in the 86th minute.
With the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers about to commence next month against El Salvador, Canada and Honduras in September, if the USMNT are able to replicate their performances, there is no reason as to why they can not reach the 2022 FIFA World Cup, especially after embarrassingly missing out on the 2018 edition of the competition in Russia.
