The new soccer season brings optimism for many top European teams, each aiming to become the very best in the world.
Some teams, such as Manchester City, are pushing to compete against what they accomplished last season.
Others, such as Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, aim to win back trophies that went to their rivals instead.
While the most crucial position for a team is finishing as high as possible at the end of the season, teams that start well are already on their way to accomplishing their goals.
Below is our ranking of the five best soccer teams in the world in the early part of the 2023-2024 season.
1. Manchester City
Whenever you look at football betting odds, Manchester City is a favorite for any game or competition.
Last season’s treble winners hope to repeat that feat or perform even better this term.
City will have a chance to win the Club World Cup while defending their Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup trophies.
The League Cup is one competition they will not be able to win, as Newcastle United has already eliminated them.
A solid start in the Premier League, where they will be at the top of the table at the end of the weekend, is accompanied by assured displays in the Champions League.
No team has ever won two consecutive trebles, but City is the one team that may achieve the unthinkable.
2. Bayern Munich
If there is one side in Europe that can match Manchester City at its very best, it may be Bayern Munich.
The German giants were not at their best last term, as they needed a final-day disaster from Borussia Dortmund to hold onto their Bundesliga crown.
The Champions League was not much better for Bayern last term, as City thumped them over two legs.
Bayern have, however, started this season very promisingly.
They are in a good position in the Bundesliga, while their Champions League campaign is also on track.
The addition of Harry Kane from Tottenham may be the one move that gives them a huge chance to win the Champions League this season.
3. Barcelona
Last season’s La Liga winners struggled significantly in European competitions under coach Xavi Hernandez.
While they dominated in Spain, including against rivals Real Madrid, they were bundled out of the Champions League in the group stages.
They lost their first tie to Manchester United, even in the Europa League.
Significant summer recruitment has seen Barca improve their squad even further.
Ilkay Gundogan and Joao Cancelo are outstanding trophy winners who will take the team to another level.
While the main aim for the Catalan giants is to repeat their Spanish league win, they will be hoping to do much better in Europe.
Reaching the quarter-finals or semi-finals of the Champions League is a significant ambition.
4. Real Madrid
Los Blancos had a disaster of a 2022-2023 season by their high standards, as they did not win La Liga or the Champions League.
Europe’s most successful team in history was far from Barcelona in their domestic league, while Manchester City was too good for them to beat in the Champions League.
Real surprised many people by not investing in a center forward this summer, even after losing Karim Benzema to the Saudi Pro League.
While Benzema’s goals are a miss, Real has started the season strongly.
The Madrid giants are currently top of La Liga as of Saturday night, with Atletico Madrid able to close the gap if they win their game in hand.
5. Liverpool
The Merseyside giants struggled last season, which shocked many of their supporters.
Having nearly won four trophies in the 2021-2022 season, Liverpool were far adrift of significant honors in 2022-2023.
Manager Jurgen Klopp may have waited too long to refresh his midfield, as a lack of energy in the middle of the park meant they were bundled out of every cup competition early.
While Liverpool are not in this season’s Champions League, they can win the Europa League.

The above five teams are not the only ones in contention to win their domestic leagues and European trophies.

While every other side in Europe is still chasing Manchester City, there is early-season optimism that Pep Guardiola’s side can be caught.
They have already lost to Arsenal in the Premier League, but they have yet to face a top side in the Champions League.
