The excitement and anticipation that builds up when a young player emerges from the academy into the first team is a feeling that is hard to replicate in football. Fans of clubs know that nothing beats seeing a homegrown talent grow up before their eyes and blossom into a superstar.
With the standard of soccer higher than it has ever been, picking the top five young players shining in top European leagues and for their national teams is extremely difficult. Many great talents have not made this list simply because of the quality they are competing against.
Below is a ranked list of the world’s top five young soccer players in 2023–2024.
1. Erling Haaland
A superstar for Manchester City and the Norway national team, Erling Haaland is already one of the best forwards in the world. Whenever you see soccer odds for a game Haaland is playing, you can expect him to have the shortest odds of scoring a goal.
Haaland has consistently been rated highly as he came through the youth level and became a senior pro. Last season was his first in the Premier League, which caused a lot of people to sit up and take notice of his quality.
The attacker led Manchester City to their first-ever Champions League trophy in his first season at the club, while his team also lifted the Premier League and FA Cup trophies.
2. Pedri
Barcelona’s young midfield superstar Pedri (real name Pedro López) is one of the best young players on the planet. Very few footballers have the level of close control, passing ability, creativity, and energy that Pedri possesses. Many fans consider him a combination of Xavi and Andrés Iniesta — two legendary former Barca midfielders.
One of the best aspects of Pedri’s game is his versatility. He can play as a box-to-box midfielder, while he has the guile to excel as a no.10 behind the striker. Pedri can even play deeper in midfield, although he may struggle against more prominent and physical teams.
Pedri is only 20 but has already won the UEFA European Championship Young Player of the Tournament and the Golden Boy award.
3. Jude Bellingham
Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham has rocketed up this list in the past 12 months. The midfielder, who came through the ranks at Birmingham City, is now shining at the biggest club in the world.
The Spanish giants paid a lot of money to secure Bellingham in the summer from Borussia Dortmund. They have, so far, gotten their money’s worth on the Englishman. Bellingham has already netted several game-winning goals for Los Blancos.
The 20-year-old is being positioned as a physically dominant attacking midfielder by boss Carlo Ancelotti, with Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo often playing as split forwards in front of him.
4. Bukayo Saka
Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka is another who deserves a place on this list. Saka may only be 21, but he has already played over 100 games for the Premier League giants. He is also an England regular.
In most games, Saka operates from the right flank, cutting inside and unleashing powerful shots. His pace, trickery, close control, and decision-making set him apart from other players in his age group.
Not only does Saka often perform at a high level, but he rarely misses games for club or country. A recent hamstring injury layoff is the first time he has missed significant game time for Arsenal in two years.
5. Alejandro Garnacho
Alejandro Garnacho has played and achieved the least of all the players on this list. He has not won any major trophies yet and still needs to be a regular at Manchester United.
The Argentine winger, however, is only 19 years of age. He still has much time to show he can become a bona fide first-team superstar. Garnacho has the faith of his club boss Erik ten Hag at Man United, while Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni also admires him.
Garnacho, who burst onto the scene in the Premier League last season, will be hoping that he is even more of a regular in the starting lineup during the 2023–2024 season.
The competition to take the mantle of the best player in the world is active at present. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are nearing the end of their careers, and a new generation is training to take their place. The likes of Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, and Bukayo Saka have futures that would be the envy of any athlete on the planet. They are at fantastic clubs, play for great national teams, and have the sport at their feet. It’s another matter altogether whether one of these players can go on to have a career rivaling that of Messi or Ronaldo. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
