2020 has been a tumultuous year for football and things are showing no signs of slowing down. Perhaps the most stunning morsel of recent news involves the fact that Lionel Messi has decided to leave Barcelona after years in the limelight. Not only was this player one of the main reasons why FCB performed so well in the past, but he could also be called the centre of the club in terms of sheer charisma. However, it seems as if things will soon be coming to an end.
It has recently been announced that Messi could finally be departing after no fewer than 13 years with the team. There is also much conjecture in regards to why he is actually leaving. However, the recent dismal performance of Barcelona in the Champions League certainly did not take away from his concerns. So, where might Messi be headed in the near future?
Manchester City
This actually seems like the most logical choice at the moment. Such an observation should only stand to reason when we consider that Messi was recently in talks with Pep Guardiola; the very same manager who helped his meteoric rise to fame when he was still associated with Barcelona. These two have always seemed to have a mutually respectful relationship and there is also no doubt that Manchester City will be eager to snatch up such a talent if they have the opportunity. Let’s also keep in mind that this club is thought to be one of the few which could actually afford to offer a contract to Messi.
Inter
This is another possibility, as we need to remember that Inter tried to initially sign Messi as far back as 2008. Although it is not clear if any definitive talks have been underway, Director Massimo Mirabelli has recently hinted that a deal could very well be in the works. It is even rumoured that Inter will offer him the highest salary throughout Italy; even more robust than his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Paris Saint-Germain
Predicting where Messi may eventually land is quite different than determining the outcome of a game of blackjack, as this player is much easier to read than a deck of cards. One of the reasons why the relationship between Messi and Barcelona became strained was said to involve the 2017 transfer of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain. Might Messi be able to reunite with his friend? This does indeed seem to be a possibility, as PSG certainly possesses the finances to offer him an enticing contract.
We should not have to wait too long before we learn where Messi chooses to play. While this is a devastating blow to Barcelona, let’s remember that FCB has enjoyed its fair share of limelight over the years. It is now time for another team to step up and lead the pack. It will be very interesting to see the outcome of this current scenario.
