It has been confirmed that there will be 11 host cities for matches in 2026, with a total of 80 games being spread out due to the fact that the competition has been expanded from 32 teams to a total of 48.
The United States will get 60 of those games with the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final all scheduled to take place in the country, while Canada and Mexico will be hosting 10 games each.
Which cities have been confirmed to host games?
Of the 11 cities to have been announced, it is unsurprising that America is home to most of them, with games being played all across the vast nation.
Both Los Angeles and New York have been selected and one of these cities is expected to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final (still to be determined), whilst other venues include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle.
Games in Canada will be played in Toronto and Vancouver, whereas Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey will be used as locations for the 10 matches that are scheduled to be played in Mexico.
First FIFA World Cup in North America since 1994
The last time a FIFA World Cup was hosted in North America was back in the United States in 1994.
Brazil would go on to win that edition of the competition via a penalty shootout when Italy’s Roberto Baggio missed his spot-kick after sending it over the bar in front of a packed crowd at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
He was not the only one to miss an important penalty, though, as Diana Ross missed hers in the opening ceremony to kick the tournament off.
Additionally, the competition was very different to the one that is scheduled to take place in a variety of different ways. In 1994, nine host cities were used, while 24 teams took part. Indeed, the 2026 edition could see double that, while England will be hoping they qualify for this one after missing out almost 30 years ago.
