EURO 2020 analytics: Portugal vs Germany – download our report
Group D at EURO 2020 has long been billed as the ‘Group of Death’, and matchday two certainly saw the group come alive, with Germany posting an impressive 4-2 win over defending champions Portugal. Germany had been defeated 1-0 by France in their first match, and while they did create quite a few chances in that match, France could have easily had two more goals if they had managed to stay onside. Portugal, on the other hand, huffed and puffed for 85 minutes against Hungary before a lucky deflection broke the deadlock, and then went on to score twice more through Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo gave Portugal the lead here too after a sustained spell of German pressure – the record goalscorer at the Euros making a lung-busting run from his own half to get on the end of Diogo Jota’s cross and score against Germany for the first time ever. Germany had seen a goal disallowed for offside by this point, but then came roaring back, with Robin Gosens terrorising Nelson Semedo down the German left flank. Gosens forced an own goal from Ruben Dias and there was a carbon copy goal from the other side when Joshua Kimmich advanced from right wing-back and sent in a cross that Raphael Guerreiro turned into his own net as well. Germany scored their third just a few minutes after half-time, when another Gosens cross found Kai Havertz in the box, and made it four when Kimmich crossed for the Atalanta man to volley into the net and cap an incredible personal performance. Diogo Jota did pull one goal back for Portugal, but Germany saw things out, and have now arguably blown EURO 2020 wide open, as they are definite contenders if they continue to perform at this level.
