EURO 2020 analytics: Czech Republic vs England – download our report
We are rapidly moving towards the conclusion of the group stages at EURO 2020, and yesterday marked the last matches in Group D, with England facing the Czech Republic at Wembley, while Croatia played Scotland at Hampden Park. England and the Czech Republic had already qualified for the round of 16, while the winner of the Croatia-Scotland game would join them as one of the four best third-placed sides. England manager Gareth Southgate was forced to be without a couple of players, with Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell needing to isolate after coming into contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for COVID-19 after the England-Scotland game. He brought in Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka into the XI, with Harry Maguire also returning from injury, and it were the two attacking talents who combined for England’s goal. Saka picked the ball up in his own half and progressed into the Czech half before laying it off to Kyle Walker, and when the ball made its way to the opposite flank, it was Grealish who jinked into the box and sent a brilliant looping cross for Raheem Sterling to head home. England managed to control the match from there on, not allowing the Czech Republic to get too many attacks going, and they also managed to give Jordan Henderson 45+ minutes in the second half, with the Liverpool skipper also returning from injury. England have now topped Group D as a result, and will face the second-placed team from Group F in the round of 16, who could be any of France, Portugal, Germany or Hungary. Croatia’s win over Scotland moved them up to second place in the table, and the Czech Republic are now waiting for results in Group E and F to find out who they will play.
