Serie A 2022/23: Percentage of minutes across each age group of all 20 teams

Serie A has been known to produce exciting young talent in recent years. The Italian top flight has seen the rise of Aaron Hickey, Dušan Vlahović, Sandro Tonali, and Dejan Kulusevski to name a few. 2022/23 has been no different in that aspect. Among the brightest prospects to emerge out of Serie A this season are Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Napoli, Lorenzo Colombo of Lecce, Josh Doig of Hellas Verona and a few others. The below visualisation shows how the minutes have been split across the different age groups in Serie A this season. The minutes given to each player were added to arrive at the overall minutes for each team and then the percentage was calculated across each age group.

Newly promoted Lecce, who sit 14th in the table, have given the highest percentage of minutes to U23 players. Napoli, top of the table with a 12-point lead over Milan (at the time of writing) have been able to continue their best form in recent years by giving a high percentage of overall minutes to players in their prime (26-29 years).

Torino have the lowest mean age at 24 years, while defending champions Milan, who have rightly received all the plaudits for their squad planning in recent years, seem to have used players aged between 23-25 years mostly.

Internazionale have the oldest squad in the league in terms of mean age( 30 years).

Sassuolo have given the most minutes to players between 23-25 years old.

The visual also goes on to show that Juventus seem to mostly use players aged 30 and above; they occupy the first spot in that category.
