Serie A 2023/24: Biggest improvers and regressors since last year

Inter have won the 2023/24 Serie A title with 86 points to their name, 17 clear of Milan with five games to go. Last season, they finished third with 72 points.

Juventus and Bologna have replaced Napoli and Lazio in the top four, while Milan remains in contention for UCL football next season. With five games to go, it looks likely that the four currently in the top four will be those we see qualify for Europe’s elite competition come the end of the season.

The below visualisation shows the points tally of the teams from last season and the current season.

Napoli’s is the biggest difference. Champions last season, with 90 points, they are currently eighth with 49 points, six below Roma (55 points).

After an inconsistent November and December, Napoli seemed to have picked up some momentum since the turn of the year and will look to push into the UCL places. Salernitana, who surprised everyone by finishing 15th last season with 42 points, are set to be relegated this term with only 15 to their name so far.

Even though it is a remote possibility that they will still play in Serie A next season, it is a mathematical possibility. One other notable difference in the points table is Bologna’s eight-point increase from last season.

Thiago Motta’s revolutionary football might take his team to the UCL, while Sassuolo are another surprise package, with the team currently in the relegation zone on 26 points — 19 below their count from last season. Lazio are another team who are likely to finish with fewer points than last season, with Udinese, Empoli, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Roma and Monza all in with a chance of finishing the season with fewer points than last time out.

At this stage, Inter, Juventus, and Bologna are the only three teams with higher points this season than last, while Milan, Torino, Leece, and Hellas Verona all could finish this season with higher totals.
