Ligue 1 2022/23: Can Joe Rodon revive his career at Rennes?

Joe Rodon signed for Spurs in 2020 after an impressive 2019/20 season in the EFL Championship. But since signing for Spurs, the 24-year-old Welsh center-back has made only 15 appearances in the league in two Premier League seasons. With Spurs having signed Cristian Romero after that and Eric Dier and Davinson Sánchez improving in form, Rodon has gone down the pecking order for selection and has since secured a loan move to Rennes for the 2022/23 season. Things haven’t worked out as planned for Rodon since his move from Swansea City but he showed signs during his time at the EFL Championship what he is capable of.

The following visualisation shows Joe Rodon’s numbers from 2019/20 EFL Championship season.

Joe Rodon is an athletic young center-back with an excellent awareness for the game on the pitch. This puts above for PAdj. Interceptions per 90 minutes (84th percentile). Rodon is not messy in his tackling as seen with his percentile rank for PAdj. Sliding tackles per 90 mins. Aerially, he can still improve as he ranked only 54th percentile for Aerial Duels per 90 minutes. An aspect of his game that he might have to improve if he wants to become a regular at top level football is his passing. Joe Rodon did not make any key passes during the 2019/20 season and only ranked in the 41st percentile for Progressive passes per 90 minutes. He also did not find teammates regularly in the penalty area or the final third with his passing.

Joe Rodon’s time at Spurs might paint a negative picture but he was still regularly playing for Wales during the last two years. He is still only 24-years-old and has a long career ahead of him. Rodon has always shown he has the abilities needed to become a regular center-back at top level football. He will be watched by everyone when he is playing for Rennes, including the people at Spurs. If he can revive his career and become a regular at Spurs, or anywhere else, only time will tell.
