La Liga 2023/24: Sevilla’s fall from grace

Sevilla, a club that had never finished below seventh in the table over the last 10 years until this past season, are very likely to finish lower than 10th in the 2023/24 La Liga campaign. For a club so consistent at the top end of the table, the recent years have turned out to be a struggle for various reasons on and off the pitch.

The visualisation below shows Sevilla’s points tally from the last 10 seasons, and the stark contrast over the last couple of seasons is clear.

sevilla points tally

Sevilla’s highest league position in the last 10 seasons is fourth, finishing in that position in 2017 and then for three seasons back-to-back during 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2021/22. With 77 points in the 2020/21 season, Sevilla achieved their highest points tally.

Their total of 76 points during the 2014/15 season did not help them qualify for the UCL through the league, but they did qualify after winning the Europa League.

This season, Sevilla have earned 34 points from 31 games, a position that keeps them nine points clear of the drop. While they are likely to stay in the league, their current performance suggests a potential lower finish. This is a significant contrast to their underwhelming finish last year — 12th with 49 points. If this trend continues, they are likely to finish the season with their lowest points total of the previous 10 seasons, a fact that underscores the current challenges they are facing.

The club’s frequent change in management has led to a lack of consistency on the pitch, with contrasting styles of play being showcased. Moreover, a significant number of departures from the team and at the management level have further complicated the situation. These issues, which have been simmering in the background, have been masked by Sevilla’s frequent successes in Europe. However, this season could mark a turning point, potentially leading to the club’s first failure to qualify for Europe in a long time.
