La Liga 2022/23: Sergio Camello’s season so far

Rayo Vallecano have had a very stop-and-start season so far, and the Spanish club have struggled for consistency over the course of the campaign. After gaining some kind of momentum before the World Cup break, Rayo have struggled to win games in 2023, especially since February.

As one of the smallest teams in La Liga, Rayo Vallecano are punching above their weight and currently sit 9th in the table. They will, in all likelihood, continue playing in the top division of Spanish football next year. A team that is home to a number of emerging talents in Spain, Rayo have been impressive at times in their style of play and performances this season. One player who has been crucial to Rayo is 22-year-old forward Sergio Camello.

The below visualisation shows where Camello ranks for some of the key metrics when compared with the other centre-forwards in La Liga 2022/23.

Sergio Camello has the second most goals and assists for Rayo this season with nine (five goals & four assists). For a team that has struggled to score this season, that is not bad. Looking at the visual above, Camello seems to be in and around the median percentile for a number of attacking metrics.

Not someone who takes a lot of shots, Camello ranks 56th percentile for shots per 90 minutes. From the Atlético Madrid academy, currently on loan at Rayo, the forward has had a couple of good seasons now — first with Mirandés last season in the Segunda Division where he finished as the highest scorer for the club and now in La Liga.

Camello’s impressive work rate as indicated by the number of duels he competes in shows that the 22-year-old forward has been nothing short of an important player for Rayo this season. He is only one of two players to have appeared in every league game for Rayo this season. At only 22 years old, Camello has shown he has what it takes to play among the elite of La Liga. Given Atlético’s need for players in the forward line for next season, it will be interesting to see if the Madrid club decide to retain him or send him out on loan once again.
