The group stages at EURO 2020 came to a conclusion on Wednesday, with two matches in Group F to finish things off. Portugal faced France in Budapest, while Hungary took on Germany in Munich, with all four teams capable of reaching the knockout rounds. It was a night of high drama, with Portugal occupying every position in the group at various stages of the match. Portugal manager Fernando Santos made a few changes from the side that lost to Germany, with Renato Sanches and Joao Moutinho coming into midfield, while Didier Deschamps made just one alteration, as Jules Kounde played at right-back instead of Benjamin Pavard. This was a match between the reigning European and world champions, and did not disappoint. Portugal took the lead through Cristiano Ronaldos penalty after Danilo Pereira had been caught in the face by France goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, but France levelled things up on the stroke of half-time with a penalty of their own, with Karim Benzema scoring from the spot. Benzema gave France the lead just a couple of minutes into the second half, as he ran onto Paul Pogbas exquisite pass to finish. The goal was disallowed for offside initially, but VAR upheld it, and at that moment, Portugal were fourth and heading out of EURO 2020. However, they hauled themselves back in through yet another penalty, dispatched once again by Ronaldo, who equalled Ali Daeis record for most international goals 109, in the process. Rui Patricio made a stunning save from Pogbas shot from outside the box before getting up to deflect Antoine Griezmanns attempt from the rebound as well, and thus the points were shared in this thrilling encounter. France therefore qualified as group winners, and will face Switzerland in Bucharest, while Portugal finished third in the group for the second Euros in a row, and will take on Belgium in Seville.
