Group D, vaunted as the ‘Group of Death’ at EURO 2020, kicked off with Hungary facing Portugal in Budapest.
The Hungarians put on a valiant defensive performance for 84 minutes before a deflected shot by Raphael Guerreiro found its way into the net to open the scoring for Portugal.
Cristiano Ronaldo added further gloss by netting a brace to round off the scoring and give Portugal a 3-0 win that does not reflect the match.
Ronaldo, who became the first man to play at five European Championships, also overtook Michel Platini to become the top scorer in the tournament’s history—he now has 11 goals.
Portugal struggled to create clear-cut chances against Hungary, with Ronaldo missing a big opportunity in the first half, and looked certain to be heading for a goalless draw before Guerreiro’s intervention and then Ronaldo’s late burst.
