At the time of writing, Wrexham are top of the League One table, as their meteoric rise continues.
Birmingham are second only on goal difference.
Only three points separate Barnsley in third and Wycombe in 11th—that is how competitive the start of this season has been and how League One has always been.
Despite this competitiveness and unpredictability, some teams often struggle against a particular opponent, and the table below highlights each team’s bogey team from the last five seasons (not including the current one).
Please note that some teams, including Wrexham and Birmingham, might not be listed below because they were absent from the league during the aforementioned five-season period.
We start with Barnsley, who were in the Championship but were relegated to League One three seasons ago.
They do not necessarily have a bogey team during this period, but they have twice lost to Bolton, Exeter, Lincoln, Charlton, Derby, and Peterborough.
Charlton Athletic have lost to Bolton Wanderers five times during this period and have the same record against Oxford United, who are now in the Championship.
Lincoln City’s bogey team is Portsmouth, to whom they have lost seven times during the five-season period.
Portsmouth seems to be the bogey team for quite a lot of other teams, including Wycombe, who have four times to Portsmouth in the specified period, Peterborough United, who have lost three times, as well as lost to Oxford three times, and Rotherham United, who have lost to the Pompey twice having been on and off in League One over the last five seasons.
Shrewsbury have lost six times to Portsmouth and the same number of games to Oxford United.
Bolton and Bristol Rovers have lost five times to Wycombe, while Bristol Rovers have also lost five times to Burton Albion.
Their bogey teams are Ipswich and Oxford, both of whom are now not in League One.
Exeter City, Blackpool, Northampton Town, and Wigan Athletic struggle against more than two teams, with a record of two defeats against multiple opposition.
Leyton Orient, Stevenage, and Reading do not have a bogey because they have a pretty even record against all teams.
Cambridge United, who are bottom of the table, have lost four times to Cheltenham during this period.
