Premier League 2022/23: Tottenham vs Fulham - data viz, stats and insights

Football experts have been more prevalent over the past few years. Due to the development of state-of-the-art data analytic technologies, more professional clubs are investing in hiring expert analysts.

Clubs constantly work to improve their on-field performances and can’t afford to ignore errors. Therefore, analysts are expected to evaluate the tactical performances of the sides.

In this post, we’ll demonstrate how to analyze a football game to make informed betting predictions. If you’re not a big sports betting fan, check out the best no verification casinos. These sites don’t require identity verification. Yet, they will allow you have fun playing slots and card games for real money.

Defining Match Analysis

Match analysis essentially means examining a football game in a structured manner. The objective is to give the coach and team feedback on how their performance and game plan worked.

Bookmakers and bettors also rely on match analysis in a bid to predict the outcome of future matches. Match analysis is primarily divided into two: quantitative and qualitative analyses. This classification is intended to help avoid relying just on data and statistics.

How To Get Started with Football Analysis

While football analytics firms like InStat, Opta Sports, and Scisports offer an alternate entry point into sports data work, many professional teams are trying to grow their analytics departments.

Regrettably, there is fierce rivalry for jobs in this field. So how can you beat the competition? What are the most effective strategies to develop your experience and skill set? We’ll walk you through simple steps in this article to get you started with football statistics and analytics.

Commence watching Football Analytically

It’s likely you currently watch football if you want to perfect your skills in this field. Additionally, you likely get drawn into a game a lot of the time, enjoying the ambiance and following the many plots rather than paying close attention to various motions and tactical plays – and that’s perfectly okay.

Remembering that the great game is meant to be enjoyed, and appreciating the brilliance of upsets, wonder shots and comebacks is crucial. However, you must begin viewing games in a specific way if you want to pursue a career in analytics.

When you watch football analytically, there are many factors to take into account, so if it gets confusing, try to concentrate on a few crucial parts of the performance that you desire to comprehend.

Once you’ve gotten used to watching football in this manner, it will eventually become a natural way for you to watch games, and your confidence in your ability to recognize tactical choices will only grow.

Interact More with the Twitter Football Community

You are welcome to join the hugely active Twitter community of football analytics enthusiasts. Professional football clubs are also looking for analysts from the Twitter community more and more.

Ashwin Raman, a remote scout for Dundee, says, “There is a lot of collaboration, in terms of ideas. I learned everything I know about analytics from people inside the community.”

Russell Pope, a defunct Sutton United analyst, agrees, saying, “It feels like a real community. If someone asks me to retweet their work, I’m happy to do that, because I got that the same support in the first instance.”

There are a lot of intelligent and tactically astute individuals that post stuff on Twitter, and clubs are increasingly hiring them. It would be a mistake to pass up the opportunity to work, network, and build a portfolio from the comfort of your home.

Learn How to Code

This is a major issue. Although learning to code may seem frightening and foreign to you, it will greatly benefit you in the field of football data analytics. In fact, it’s necessary.

The good news is that there are a ton of online tools available for learning to code, many of which are free. R and Python are the two primary programming languages used in sports analytics.  Friends of Tracking, FC Python and FC RStats, and Ahmad Lala’s Python course, are a few online tools and resources that can be helpful in this regard.

And while learning to code may seem a little overwhelming initially, most analytics enthusiasts report that after their early encounters, it’s not as challenging as they first believed. Play around with Excel’s tables, data presentations, and graphs.

This can provide you with a solid base from which to master how to code. Then, if you choose the appropriate educational resources and take the time to learn from them, you’ll probably pick things up quickly.

Learn the Different Strands of Football Data Analytics

Keep in mind that there are many various job kinds in the field of football analytics. Each needs a slightly different set of skills and interests.

Top data analyst positions may be most suited for those with mathematical backgrounds and a focus on numbers. Video analyst positions may suit individuals who are better at analyzing match footage and extracting strategies and tactical trends from it.

Both of these positions can be performed remotely, but many clubs prefer to employ in-house specialists.

Additionally, data and analytics workers aren’t necessarily employed by teams. Businesses and data suppliers like Wyscout, StatsBomb, and Sportradar hire people for a range of positions.

Sports magazines like The Athletic frequently post job openings within their analytics teams. Keep an eye out for opportunities and learn all that you can about football analytics techniques. Everyone can find something to enjoy, provided they are motivated enough.

Final Thoughts

Overall, there is a good match between quantitative and qualitative analysis. Unlike quantitative analysis, which takes the shape of data and can support our observation, the qualitative approach is always based on the opinions of the analyst.

As such, qualitative analysis should either be clustered using semi-qualitative analysis or confirmed by other observers. Last but not least, when analyzing a game or a squad, the system and method of play must be taken into account.

To sum up, match analysis, like most things in life, depends on the proper balance of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The attitude of the team should always be taken into consideration because in football there is more to it than just good or wrong.
