With fans finally starting to be permitted to watch games in football stadiums across the top 4 divisions in English football – and with Christmas just round the corner – we take a look at the leading goalscorers in all 4 of the highest professional English Football leagues.
The Premier League has sparked into life with Tottenham, guided under Jose Mourinho perhaps an unlikely, but not out of contention – leader of the Premier League with the Champions Elect of 2019/20 hot on their tailcoats.
With the majority of the English top-flight having played top games, it’s the Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin who loading the scoring charts with 10 goals to his name. Son Heung-Min of Spurs trails the scoring charts in second place with 9 goals and 2 assists to date; whilst both Jamie Vardy (Leicester) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) sit just behind with 8 goals each.
The Championship this season has seen the canaries, Norwich City, steal a lead a the top of the table after 15 games with other early title & promotion contenders consisting of the likes of AFC Bournemouth, Watford and Reading. The top 3 scorers in the league suggest a different picture though – with the exception of Lucas Joao of Reading sitting 3rd with 10 goals. The pacesetters this season however have emerged as Adam Armstrong of Blackburn Rovers (14) and Ivan Toney of Brentford (13) respectively.
Moving on to League one and Callum Camps of Fleetwood is the early goalscoring surprise package sitting on 8 goals, matched by Jonson Clarke-Harris of Peterborough United. Top scorer after 15 games does come from a more likely source however, with John Marquis of hotly tipped Portsmouth sitting at the top of the tree (Christmas pun – we apologise) with 9 goals and a healthy 2 assists to help the south coasts teams efforts this season.
Finally we take a look at lowly League Two who have perhaps felt the biggest financial concerns in terms of survival since the pandemic began. Early pace-setters include Newport County, Cheltenham Town and Exeter City whom all occupy the promotion positions after 15 games. The League Two top scores however come from different origin, with Paul Mullin of Cambridge United out in front on an exceptional return of 13, followed by Danny John of Leyton Orient on 10, and Jack Muldoon of Harrogate Town tied Tranmere’s James Vaughan in third on 8 goals a piece.
Some of these names will come as no surprise the punters whilst others would be fair to suggest were rank outsiders for such accolades at this stage of this season. However, should bettors be tempted to have a flutter on final top scorers, it would certainly make sense to make use of free bets from bookmakers if they fancy a flutter.
