The Premier League heads into the international break and we have an unlikely league leader. That is Everton, who are currently sitting on 12 points after four wins from four games. They are just one of two teams to win all their games so far, Aston Villa are behind them with three wins from three.
When talking about possible fast starters ahead of the season start, Everton certainly weren’t mentioned, unfancied by those on the UK new betting sites list.
Summer Signings Already Paying Off for Toffees
Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti asked for backing this summer and despite uncertain times surrounding football and the wider world right now, the Everton ownership delivered.
They brought in four big names that were signed to make an impact, something we have certainly seen so far.
James Rodriguez was a free transfer signing, not commanding a transfer fee but his high wages have certainly forced Everton to spend big on him. Put the Columbian alongside Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure who have both cost in the region of £20 million and Everton have spent big to transform their midfield.
This was seen as a key area for them, one that needed improving and from their four games so far, the evidence of their moves has been clear for all to see. Everton look sharp, they have a great ability to win the ball back and turn things around, while Rodriguez in particular has the skill to quickly turn anything into a genuine attacking opportunity.
Further Strengthening to Build on Good Start
Not content with what has happened so far, Everton have continued to splash the cash right up to the end of the transfer deadline. This time they have focused on bringing in a defender that can not only contribute now, but could be a player that sits in the back four for the next decade.
Everton have spent over £20 million again, this time on defender Bed Godfrey from Norwich. The 22 year old impressed during his season in the Premier League with Norwich last season, and has been the centre of talks surrounding his future for most of the summer.
The Toffees have finally decided to take a plunge, and when you look at how they have started, you can’t blame them.
There is every chance that the top 6 and European football is within their grasp this season, especially given the fact that some of the bigger clubs have showed signs of struggling already this season.
There is an opportunity open right now for Everton, and in the past they would no doubt have refused to spend and been criticised for that. However, this time around things are different. They have put together a package of support for manager Carlo Ancelotti, he has no excuses and needs to deliver on that.
We’ve only seen four games, so can’t get too excited just yet, but there is no doubt that a big impression has been made by the club.
