The Top 5 Premier League Must-Watch Games of this Season

As the May 19 conclusion of the Premier League approaches, all eyes are on the remaining games. As the season winds down, each match takes on a larger-than-life quality—especially for the teams fighting relegation or to be crowned champions. It’s been a particularly competitive season, specifically at the top of the table. No clear champion has pulled ahead.

Instead, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Man City have been clobbering it out, remaining in close contention in terms of points. It’s a battle of the greats—with many keeping their eyes on managers Mikel Arteta, Jurgen Klopp, and Pep Guardiola as much as the players. Given this will be Klopp’s final year with the Reds, it’s given even deeper meaning to this year’s Premier League run.

For now, all three teams remain within one point, with Arsenal and Liverpool tied just above Man City. Though there’s limited time for one team to pull ahead, there are still thrilling matches on the horizon. Let’s take a look at some of the best fixtures still planned for this season, along with some of the top games played so far.

Top Games So Far

Selecting the most satisfying faceoffs in retrospect is one of the best parts of being a Premier League fan. As one of the world’s most competitive leagues, there’s usually no shortage of riveting battles. Man United, for example, have made a few nail-biting comebacks.

On 26 August, they managed to forfeit two goals to Nottingham Forest in the first four minutes of the game—a Premier League record for the team. A red card in the second half gave Bruno Fernandes the time he needed to recover and post a 3-2 win. The team faced similar late-game battles against Brentford (7 October), Aston Villa (26 December), and the Wolves (1 February).

However, they couldn’t manage a win against Arteta’s side on 2 September. Arsenal swept in during added time on a 1-1 tie, notching goals from Declan Rice and then Gabriel Jesus to walk away with a solid win.

Chelsea have also produced two of the year’s best matches. First was their tie against Arsenal on 21 October. Chelsea pulled ahead early on, notching two goals. However, a jaw-dropping 35-yard goal from Rice gave Arsenal the momentum they needed. At 84’, Leandro Trossard equalized.

Chelsea again faced a tough tie after their bout with Man City on 12 November. But this one wasn’t quite the same. Both teams scored four goals—a high-scoring game by any measure. But the cherry on top was Cole Palmer scoring a penalty against his former team during stoppage, helping secure the tie.

Best Upcoming Matches: Man City v. Arsenal, 31 March

One of the biggest matches remaining this season is the Man City-Arsenal fixture scheduled for 31 March. At the moment, Premier League odds favor Man City slightly. However, there are a handful of other ways to wager on the match’s outcome. Totals lines are set at 2.5 while Man City has been handicapped three goals in the point spread.

Man City will have a homefield advantage, which could have a huge influence. The team has won five of their last six home games, two of which came with a two-goal margin. However, Man City have also been the first to concede in two of the last three home games. Though they’re certainly able to win after coming from behind, it’s a dangerous game to play with Arteta’s Arsenal.

Man City v. Aston Villa, 3 April

A head-to-head matchup history shows a clear favorite—which few would be surprised by. Man City have taken home eight wins from their last ten matchups against Aston Villa. However, the last game played between the two sides (6 December 2023) saw Aston leave with a 1-0 win.

Though the odds are in Man City’s favor, this is going to be one of the most exciting fixtures for both teams this season. Those looking to back an underdog in the coming weeks would have a solid choice in Aston Villa on 3 April.

Man United v. Liverpool, 7 April

Most teams at the top of the table have a strong rivalry—but none can match the fervor behind Man United and Liverpool. Any matchup between these two powerhouses draws in crowds and wagers. Unsurprisingly, Liverpool are the heavy favorites in this matchup.

Man United tends to struggle offensively against Liverpool. The team have failed to score in four of their last five matchups against Klopp’s side. Meanwhile, Liverpool have the power of Luis Diaz on their side—a player whose offensive power has been off the charts since the start of 2024. Some are sensing another mammoth takedown like last year’s 7-0 sweep at Anfield.

Arsenal v. Aston Villa, 14 April

It’s a battle of the Basques in this faceoff between Arteta and Unai Emery. Though Arsenal are the favorites, they’ll be wading through a difficult UEFA Champions League campaign during this time. The fixture is likely to be rescheduled.

Regardless of when the game takes place, Aston will need to focus on defense to avoid letting in key goals. Though both teams have scored a comparable number of goals this season, Emery’s side has conceded far more. However, it seems Aston is more than able to pull out the stops any time they face Arsenal; stats aside, Aston took home a win during their last faceoff on 9 December with a 1-0 win.

Liverpool v. Tottenham, 4 May

It’s been an injury-ridden season for both teams, with a few more key players out for Tottenham in the coming weeks. Still, that hasn’t stopped either side from showing up. As with the Arsenal-Aston Villa matchup, the key here will be defense for Tottenham. Compared to Liverpool’s backfield, the Spurs have struggled.

And, once again, there is a slight edge in Tottenham’s favor. Despite Klopp’s side being a tour de force throughout the season, the last matchup between these two saw the Spurs walk away with a 2-1 win back in late September. This time, however, Anfield is hosting, giving Liverpool the power of the twelfth man.
